Kylie Jenner Faces Backlash For PDA As Family Grieves
Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet were among the many famous faces at the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
While the heated match played on, leaving viewers at the edge of their seats, the lovebirds were in a world of their own, unable to get their hands off each other.
However, the romantic display didn’t sit well with fans who thought it was inappropriate, given the major loss Jenner’s family recently suffered with the death of their grandmother.

Although soccer powerhouse Messi was on the field, with the likes of President Donald Trump, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Tom Cruise present at the MetLife Stadium, Jenner and Chalamet stole all the attention.
The couple was caught engaging in a steamy PDA session while in the VIP section, making a date night out of the sports event. A viral clip from the match saw them stopping to share a sweet kiss as they chatted playfully throughout.
For the event, Jenner stunned in a semi-casual outfit comprising capri pants and a long-sleeved top with a plunging neckline that flaunted her cleavage.
She paired the ensemble with low slipper heels and sunglasses she wore throughout the game. The “Dune” actor, on the other hand, looked sporty with a blue Adidas sweatshirt paired with sweatpants and white footwear.
Fans Bash Kylie Jenner For Not ‘Mourning’ Appropriately
Online users wasted no time sharing their thoughts on Jenner and Chalamet’s steamy moment, with many pointing out the appearance comes just days after she lost her beloved grandmother.
“Didn’t her grandmother just die? Guess the cameras are more important,” one fan blatantly slammed.
“A little too happy knowing her grandma just left the map,” another harsh critic wrote on X. This user questioned, “Isn’t she supposed to be in mourning?” while another urged the reality star, “Go home and mourn your grandma.”
Others found a problem with the loved-up display at a sporting event, something Jenner and Chalamet are no strangers to. “Why the f-ck do they kiss every time when there is a camera… nobody cares who you are,” one comment read.
Timothee Chalamet Had A Special Role At The World Cup

Although the PDA was the talking point for fans, it wasn’t the only highlight of the pair’s appearance in New Jersey for the final.
Earlier, Chalamet was seemingly honored for being a major sports fan by having a special role leading up to the game, per Fox Sports.
The “Marty Supreme” star delivered the ball for the match ball, walking majestically from the tunnel to place it on a stand to cheers from the crowd. It was no doubt a big moment for Chalamet, who supported France at the semifinals.
Kylie Jenner’s Grandmother MJ Dies At 91

The “Life of Kylie” star’s World Cup outing came days after her grandmother Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon’s passing at 91.
Momager, Kris Jenner, announced the heartbreaking news of MJ’s death on Thursday, July 16, in a poignant social media statement describing her as “the heart of our family.” The heartbroken talent manager praised her mother for teaching her everything that matters in life.
Days after, Kylie broke her silence on her family’s loss, reflecting on her grandmother’s legacy, as reported by The Blast.
The 28-year-old socialite shared a carousel of throwback photos featuring her older sister, Kendall Jenner and the late MJ. In one snap, the siblings donned matching outfits with their grandmother as they struck playful poses.
Kim Kardashian Slammed For Bikini Post After Grandmom’s Death

Kylie isn’t the only member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan that has faced criticism for their disposition following MJ’s demise.
The SKIMS founder had posted bikini-clad photos from her Fourth of July celebration with her family and friends shortly after the news of the matriarch’s passing broke.
Fans wasted no time pointing out the insensitivity of the upload, with one writing, “Didn’t your grandmother just pass? This couldn’t wait [until] the weekend?”
However, according to The Blast, Kim was quick to respond to the criticism, giving a clear explanation for the timing of the post.
She explained that the IG post was prescheduled days before the devastating loss. “I’ve been by my mom and grandma’s side this past week, and my heart is completely with my family right now. We love and miss her so deeply, and in the days ahead, we’ll be focusing on celebrating her beautiful life,” she assured.

As The Shade Room previously reported, in March, Sukihana revealed that she was expecting her fourth child. At the time, the announcement was exclusively shared via PEOPLE.
“This baby came into my life at a time when I truly needed a reminder of purpose and love. I’ve lived a lot of my life loudly, but this moment is something I wanted to protect until I was ready to share it with the world,” she said, explaining why she decided to initially keep the news private.
By the end of that month, Sukihana shared footage from her gender reveal, which showed that she was welcoming a baby girl.

Big Brother SPOILERS: Veto Meeting Shock – Devens Saves [SPOILER] with POV!
Today in theBig Brother house, they had the veto meeting with HOH Rick Devens planning to use the veto to remove one of his original nominees so he can renominate Rome Seymour. But the plans Devens made on using the veto flip-flopped until the ceremony.
He was considering Lyric Medeiros versus Melody Morris. We’ve got your veto ceremony results with the names of the three heading into the BB28 Blockbuster on Thursday to determine the final two nominees for eviction. But first, some live feeds drama.
Big Brother 28: Veto Flip and Alliance Drama
First, Angela Murray and Dee Valladares are plotting pranks to annoy Taylor Brown and LaTrice “Lala” Verrett. Honey on the cabinet door handle. Angela said she was going to make a toothpaste mess everywhere.
Many fans don’t like them targeting the only two Black women in the cast. Lala and Taylor do a lot of cleaning – Lala’s a straight-up neat freak. Sounds like Dee and Angela’s plan is to pull this stuff to get a rise out of Taylor and Lala to make them targets. Devens apparently has been in on some of this plotting.
Also, Barrett Pfeiffer lost it this morning when BB told him not to talk about production and he snapped. So, Devens warned everyone not to talk to Barrett until he had more coffee. Apparently, being a Have Not has got Barrett starving and losing his mind.
Big Brother 28: Warning Shots Fired
But even worse, a true crisis was brewing in the house this morning. The coffee maker’s not working! And Mallory Aurichio couldn’t fix it despite her pipe queen reputation. Also on the feeds, production issued a warning about not talking about DR sessions.
Salty Mallory complained about being ignored. Drew Campbell also told Dee that Mallory’s causing issues and warned Dee that “Mallory’s psycho”. Dee said, “I don’t give a care.. She said she didn’t give a f**k if Mallory hates her. Said she couldn’t care less.
Big Brother 28: Angela’s Egg is Boiling
Also, Angela’s losing it over being stuck in the Egg Detective punishment costume. She can’t get up off the floor. She was rolling around in the backyard in it. She told Chuk Anyanwu she can barely eat. She was trying to eat ramen in it making a mess.
But Jason reassured her this would be iconic. Angela said she hopes the next five time capsule winners all get punishments. But then later, she was cam-talking to the live feeders asking them to all vote Devens for the next BB Time Capsule.
And apparently the sheer weight of the costume is causing Angela physical pain. The whole thing including the magnifying glass looks bigger than it did when Vince Panaro wore it in BB27. Angela complained and they added some support around the neck to help.
Big Brother 28: A Storm Brewing in the Shower?
Also, Devens, Drew and Kamuela “Kamu” Kirk all squished into a bubble bath together wearing boots and hats. Devens had on a shirt but the other two guys didn’t. Melody snapped some pics of them since production gave them a camera.
Then, Kamu wanted to take photos with Drew in the shower. So, that’s questionable on a few different levels. Anyone who pees in the shower – just yuck. Rome’s gushing about how much he loves Lyric, how he’s never felt this way about a girl before.
Rome called her sweet and selfless and cute. Also, Barrett’s turning on Drew and is whispering to Angela that Drew’s like a little Dr. Will.
Big Brother 28: Devens Misses out on More Screen Time
And this little fun tidbit. James Gunn, who’s directing the Superman sequel, is a mega Big Brother fan. Remember, he was on Unlocked last season. So, he said he knows Devens and offered him a little background spot in the Superman movie.
James Gunn said Devens had to cancel – because the movie’s filming now. He told James that he couldn’t tell him why he had to cancel, but Devens said he’d be excited. And James Gunn confirmed he is excited to see Devens on Big Brother.

Big Brother 28: Veto Ceremony Results and Final Three
So, on Sunday, Devens talked to most of the Crossovers and they agreed he’d use the power of veto on Melody. They said take her off the block, and renominate Rome. Then, it’d be Jason, Rome and Lyric heading into the BB Blockbuster.
That way, if Lyric and Rome were on the block together Thursday night, they couldn’t vote to save each other. But somehow, Devens got talked into swapping over to saving Lyric. So, if Rome’s still on the block Thursday night as a final nominee, she’d likely vote to save him. Even if it was another unified house vote, Lyric might vote to save Rome.
Before the veto meeting, Devens confirmed to Lyric he’d use the veto on her and renominate Rome. And Devens also told Rome. Turns out, it was Angela and Dee who talked Devens into it. They said if Rome stays, then saving Lyric might squash some beef. Hmm.
What’s ironic is that Angela complained to Dee that Devens is too easily swayed. Yet Angela and Dee literally just swayed Devens to change who he’ll use the veto on. So, the feeds went down on Monday and when they came back up, he’d done what Angela and Dee wanted.
Big Brother 28: Jason, Rome and Melody on The Block
Devens used his power of veto on Lyric and pulled her off the block. Then, he renominated Rome. So, that means Jason, Rome and Melody are the three nominees heading into the BB Blockbuster on Thursday’s live eviction episode.
After the veto meeting, Kamu was talking to people about evicting Jason instead of Rome. My thought is that Devens is making a weak play by taking a half-hearted shot at Rome. That’s what it is. When you take a shot, you gotta mean it.
Now, Lyric’s off the block to campaign for Rome and is a vote for him. It feels like weak strategy to me.
Big Brother 28: Info on the Interwebs?
Last, my tweet of the day today isn’t a funny one. It’s a spilling tea one. So, we know Drew’s been chasing Melody around and seems to be really into her. He told her that he and his ex broke up a month before he came into the BB28 house.
But it looks like that’s not true. Allegedly. Someone posted a photo of Drew and his presumed ex-girlfriend wondering when they split. Then someone named Chloe Shoh tweeted that Drew and his girlfriend are still together.
She says she shares mutual friends with his girlfriend. Then, Chloe said his girlfriend probably said “do whatever it takes to win.” Wasn’t that what Vince claimed Kelsey said in BB27 before he dove into that questionable showmance with Morgan?

What Did Lindsay Clancy Do? Mom on Trial for Killing Kids
Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children in January 2023, is set to face trial as her defense team mounts an insanity plea. She is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan, who were strangled inside the family’s home while their father was out picking up dinner.
Before her trial began on July 20, 2026, Clancy’s attorney argued she may not be criminally responsible for the killings, pointing to postpartum psychosis and a cocktail of prescribed medications.
Everything to know about the case, below.
Lindsay Clancy’s Insanity Defense Takes Shape
Clancy’s attorney Kevin Reddington told the court his client was overmedicated for postpartum depression when the killings occurred.
Reddington has said Clancy struggled with depression for a long time and voluntarily committed herself to a local psychiatric hospital less than a month before her children died, per CNN. Her doctors took her on and off medications to treat the depression, which Reddington said only worsened her symptoms.
At a pretrial hearing in June 2026, Reddington and the commonwealth’s prosecutors debated what expert evidence would be admissible to support an insanity plea.
Reddington argued jurors should hear why Clancy and her husband, Patrick Clancy, “would go to consult with doctors because of depression, because of the life that she was living, which was one of horrific misery because of medications.”
Prosecutors pushed back and signaled they may bring in their own experts to testify on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings.
What Happened Inside the Clancy Home in January 2023?
The killings took place on January 24, 2023, when Lindsay asked Patrick to go pick up dinner for the family. Patrick returned home 25 minutes later to a devastating scene: his wife had jumped out the window from the second story of their home.
While calling 911, Patrick discovered that all three of their children had been strangled with exercise bands tied around their necks. Cora and Dawson were rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead soon after. Their youngest, 8-month-old Callan, died a few days later.
Reddington has said the defense believes Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time and that she had been prescribed 15 medications in the months leading up to the tragedy in response to her postpartum depression. Prosecutors, however, have argued that Clancy carefully planned and plotted the killings when she sent her husband out for food.
Clancy was arrested and pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder. She is currently being held at the public Tewksbury Hospital in Massachusetts.
Lindsay Clancy’s Bifurcated Trial Request Denied
In April 2026, Reddington filed a motion revealing that Clancy “is offering to admit that she killed the children” if the judge agreed to a bifurcated trial format, according to WCVB. A bifurcated trial is a two-stage legal proceeding in which liability and damages are heard separately and often decided by the same jury.
“The defendant states that the issue of the actions that resulted in the death of the decedents in the indictments at the bar is not a live issue and the defendant is willing to stipulate formally in writing to her involvement,” the motion read, per People. The filing went on to state that, as a result of the admission, “the only live issue for consideration at trial would be the defendant’s state of mind as it relates to the defense of lack of criminal responsibility.”
The April 2026 motion followed an earlier denial of another defense request that would have split the proceedings into two separate trials — one to determine whether Clancy was guilty and a second to determine whether she was criminally responsible for the killings.
Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan ultimately denied the bifurcated trial request as well, ruling the matter could be handled in a single trial.
Lindsay Clancy’s Path to the July Trial
Reddington first announced in December 2025 that the defense intended to pursue an insanity plea, arguing that Clancy was in the grip of postpartum psychosis when she asked Patrick to leave the house that January evening. Ahead of the trial, Clancy was scheduled to undergo a forensic psychological evaluation.
The trial had originally been set to begin in February 2026 before it was postponed to July 20, 2026. Clancy also appeared in court on April 23, 2026, for a status hearing as both sides continued to spar over what evidence and testimony would be presented to jurors.
Prosecutors continue to maintain that Clancy carefully staged the moments before the killings, sending Patrick out of the house so she would be alone with the children. The defense counters that her behavior that evening was the tragic culmination of untreated and mismanaged postpartum illness — not premeditation.
If Clancy is found not guilty by reason of insanity, she would likely be committed to a psychiatric facility rather than sentenced to prison. A first-degree murder conviction in Massachusetts carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Netflix Gets The Best Dystopian Sci-Fi Franchise Of The Last Decade
By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

Over a decade after the release of the first film, and nearly 20 years since the debut of the first novel, people still can’t get enough of The Hunger Games. The dystopian sci-fi franchise that turned death games into entertainment has stood the test of time. It was a record-setting classic before the end of the first film’s opening weekend, and now, all five films in The Hunger Games franchise are on Netflix.
The Hunger Games Set The World On Fire

The Hunger Games turned Jennifer Lawrence into a star as Katniss Everdeen, the volunteer tribute from District 12. Her fight for survival during the nationally televised Hunger Games kickstarted a revolution that would eventually take down the corrupt government lording over the remains of North America. It was also so packed with stars, you forgot that Jack Quaid played the Tribute from District 1.
Compared to the Japanese cult-classic Battle Royale, The Hunger Games took the existing genre of death games and took it to the next level. Catching Fire, the second film, went back into the arena for another go, while the final films in Katniss’ story, Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2, put the focus on the raging Panem civil war. Every single one of them was a hit, and every single one of them has been among Netflix’s top movies since joining the service.
The One Franchise That Does Prequels Correctly

The outlier is 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel focused on the backstory of President Snow (Donald Sutherland in the first few movies, Tom Blyth in the prequel), and his love for Lucy (Rachel Zegler), a District 12 tribute. It proved that the dystopian world could expand beyond Katniss Everdeen, and that the movies didn’t need Jennifer Lawrence to sell them. It’s also available on Netflix right now, slipping in and out of the Netflix Top Ten.
A new film, Sunrise on the Reaping, will arrive on November 20th, and this time it’s the story of Haymitch (Woody Harrelson in The Hunger Games, Joseph Zada here). McKenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, who joins Haymitch as another Tribute from District 12. The novel has been out for awhile, but if you saw the first few films, you know Haymitch is a man haunted by his past, so it’s safe to say that things don’t go well during the 50th Annual Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games Has Outgrown Its YA Roots

The Hunger Games franchise has gone from Young Adult novels to the big screen since 2009. Most studios would kill to have five films of this quality, and a lot of that can be attributed first, to the original author, Suzanne Collins, and secondly, to the franchise’s director, Francis Lawrence.Lawrence has directed all but the original film and he’s been so good at bringing the teenage death games to life that he was the first one to figure out how to adapt Stephen King’s The Long Walk.
All five of The Hunger Games films are the best of the 2010’s young adult adaptation trend. Yes, there’s a love triangle, but as the stakes get higher it fades into the background. What’s left is a dystopian franchise that embraces its cruel, callous setting with open arms, puts all of its heroes through the wringer, and always remembers that there’s hope for a better tomorrow.
The Hunger Games franchise is now streaming on Netflix.

Paramount’s Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Temporarily Halted by Federal Judge : Coastal House Media
A federal judge has temporarily stopped Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, marking the biggest legal setback yet for what would become one of the largest entertainment mergers in Hollywood history.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín issued a 14-day temporary restraining order, preventing the companies from closing the deal while the court considers a request for a preliminary injunction filed by a coalition of 12 states led by California. A hearing has been scheduled for August 3, when the judge will decide whether the merger should remain on hold while the broader antitrust lawsuit moves forward.
The states argue the proposed merger would violate federal antitrust law by giving the combined company too much control over the entertainment industry. According to the lawsuit, the new media giant would command roughly 27% of the U.S. wide-release theatrical distribution market, while also combining major television networks, cable channels, film studios, and streaming services under one roof. State attorneys general contend that level of consolidation could ultimately result in higher prices, fewer movies and television shows, reduced competition, and job losses across Hollywood.
In granting the temporary restraining order, Judge Martínez-Olguín determined that the states had raised sufficiently serious antitrust concerns and that allowing the merger to close before the case is heard could create irreversible consequences. Once two companies of this size begin integrating operations, undoing the transaction later would be extremely difficult if the court ultimately rules against it.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, whose office is leading the legal challenge, praised the ruling as an important first step in protecting competition within the entertainment industry. The coalition maintains the merger threatens consumers, creative workers, theaters, and distributors alike.
Paramount Skydance, however, continues to defend the transaction. The company argues the merger is necessary to compete against technology and streaming giants such as Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and Disney, insisting the states’ antitrust claims are without merit. Paramount has expressed confidence that it will ultimately prevail in court.
The timing is especially significant because the merger agreement includes substantial financial penalties if the transaction is not completed by September 30. Reports indicate Paramount could owe Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders approximately $7 million per day in fees for delays beyond that deadline, increasing pressure on both companies to resolve the legal battle quickly.
While federal regulators previously declined to block the deal, several state attorneys general elected to pursue their own antitrust challenge. International reviews also remain ongoing in some markets, meaning the merger still faces multiple regulatory hurdles even after the upcoming August hearing.
For now, one of Hollywood’s most ambitious mergers remains on pause as the court weighs whether the entertainment industry is on the verge of becoming too consolidated.

Inside Blue Jays Hero Duane Ward’s Final Hours Before Death
Former Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Duane Ward abruptly left a dinner with a group of former teammates shortly before his death was announced on Sunday, July 19. He was 62.
“That wasn’t like Wardo to leave early,” Ward’s former Blue Jays bullpen mate Tom Henke told the Toronto Sun on Sunday. “I asked him, ‘Are you feeling alright?’ I didn’t like the way he looked, to be honest.”
Ward, Henke, 68, and a group of former teammates were in Toronto over the weekend for the unveiling of a statue commemorating the franchise’s back-to-back World Series titles in 1992 and 1993. The group had dinner on the evening of Friday, July 17.
When the team was scheduled to head to Rogers Centre the next day, however, Ward was nowhere to be found.
“I didn’t know where he was,” Henke said.
Former Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston told the Sun, “I thought something was wrong when he was late. Wardo was one of those guys who was never late. He was always on time.”
The statue unveiling went on in Ward’s absence before Toronto’s game against the Chicago White Sox. The Blue Jays announced Ward’s death on Sunday morning, revealing he had died by natural causes.
“Duane will be deeply missed by our fans, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family,” the team said in a statement. “Duane will always be a cherished part of the Blue Jays family, and we will be forever grateful for his contributions to our organization and to baseball in Canada.”
No other details about Ward’s death have been publicly revealed.
A moment of silence was held for Ward before Sunday’s game against the White Sox.
“I’m shocked right now,” Henke said about Ward’s sudden death. “How can you not be? I had supper with Wardo when he came in. We got to visit. I’m thinking now, I’m so glad I got to do that. I’m glad I got one more time with him.”
Gaston, 82, lauded Ward’s important role on the back-to-back title teams, saying the late pitcher “made my job easier.”
“He was just a good pitcher, man,” he recalled. “He took no prisoners on the mound. Sometimes I’d go out to the mound to talk to him just to bust his balls. I’d ask him, ‘How are you going to get this guy out?’ He’d tell me to get the hell back to the dugout and that he knew what he was doing.”
Gaston added, “We never worried about the 8th and 9th innings when we had Henke and Ward in the bullpen.”

Shamea Morton Talks About What Happened Following Dinner Argument
Morton and Williams got into an argument while having dinner with the rest of the cast in Scotland. As Cynthia Bailey, Pinky Cole, K. Michelle, Phaedra Parks, Drew Sidora, Kelli Ferrell and Angela Oakley looked on, a feud between their mothers — Sarah Yvonne Morton and Diane T. Williams, entered the chat.
The argument intensified, leading Williams to make accusations on social media. During an appearance on ‘Watch What Happens Live,’ Andy Cohen wasted no time in asking Morton about the fallout.
“What has been your reaction to the dinner bringing up the mothers? You guys had kind of previously agreed, let’s, let this lay,” said Cohen.
“To be honest, Andy, um the timing wasn’t good,” Morton replied. “I definitely shouldn’t have brought it up at the dinner, but I just, I don’t know. Oh, I guess it just, it just came out. I was so fed up and it was like festering for so long…. The dinner was not the appropriate time to do it.”
Williams Accused Morton of Sleeping With Pastor After Explosive Episode Aired
The argument between the ladies began after Morton claimed that Dennis McKinley said Williams didn’t want their daughter, Pilar, going to Shamea’s home. Porsha Williams copped to it before Morton accused her of blocking her from becoming a full-time housewife.
That accusation led to Morton bringing up the feud between their mothers. Shamea’s mom bought Porsha’s mom’s child daycare center last season on the ‘RHOA’, and a feud ensued.
Then, Morton blurted out, “Everybody doesn’t know that your mom tried to sleep with my dad.” Williams replied, “Your mother tried to sleep with your father’s brother.”
After the episode aired, Williams took to social media to drag Morton, and she did not mince words.
“Now let’s discuss YOU—sleeping with your manager (who’s married to one of your high school friends), as well as a pastor in Decatur who’s 100% on your roster… along with many more.”
Morton Says She Apologized To Her Pastor
During ‘Watch What Happens Live,’ Morton also said that apologized to her pastor after seeing Williams’ accusation.
“Yeah, I saw it,” she told Cohen. “I felt bad for one, my pastor, ‘cuz like, not y’all trying to get me kicked out the church. Hell. I need all the prayers I can get right now.”
“So, I apologized to my pastor,” she added. “Um, and he said, you know, he understood. Uh, you know, they were just like, ‘you’re fine.’ Like, it’s fine. It’s okay. And, you know, obviously it’s bull crap.”
Morton also joked that she was done engaging in the drama.

Kevin Feige Opens Up About Marvel’s Failed Blade Reboot: “I Feel Like a Gigantic Loser” : Coastal House Media
Released in 1997, Warriors of Virtue arrived during a decade filled with martial arts action, fantasy adventures, and larger than life creature movies. While films like Mortal Kombat, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Power Rangers dominated pop culture, Warriors of Virtue quietly carved out its own bizarre and surprisingly memorable corner of the genre.
Directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Ronny Yu before he went on to helm Bride of Chucky and Freddy vs. Jason, the film combined martial arts, fantasy, Taoist philosophy, and five kung fu fighting kangaroos into a family adventure unlike anything audiences had seen before.
A Truly Original Premise
The story follows Ryan Jeffers, a young boy with a physical disability who is transported to the mystical world of Tao after falling into a whirlpool. There, he discovers a land threatened by the evil Lord Komodo and meets the legendary Warriors of Virtue, five anthropomorphic kangaroos, each representing one of the elements and virtues of Tao.
It’s the kind of premise that sounds almost impossible to explain today, yet somehow it works. Instead of relying solely on spectacle, the film mixes coming of age themes with lessons about courage, teamwork, and believing in yourself.
Martial Arts Before CGI Took Over
One of the film’s biggest strengths remains its action.
Long before every blockbuster relied heavily on digital effects, Warriors of Virtue featured performers in elaborate creature suits executing real martial arts choreography. While some of the effects haven’t aged perfectly, the physical stunt work gives the action a tangible quality that many fans still appreciate nearly three decades later.
The film also benefited from Ronny Yu’s background in Hong Kong action cinema, giving many fight sequences a style that stood apart from typical American family films of the era.

Campy in the Best Possible Way
Let’s be honest, this movie is weird.
Kung fu kangaroos.
An evil villain named Lord Komodo.
Mystical life springs.
A fantasy world inspired by Taoist philosophy.
On paper, it sounds like a studio brainstorming session gone completely off the rails.
Yet that’s exactly why the film has endured. While critics largely dismissed it upon release, many viewers who grew up during the late ’90s remember it as one of those unforgettable VHS rentals that felt unlike anything else on the shelf. Today, discussions across movie communities frequently describe it as a forgotten childhood favorite or a “fever dream” that people were convinced they imagined until rediscovering it years later.
A Box Office Failure That Found Cult Status
Unfortunately, originality didn’t translate into box office success.
Produced on a reported budget of around $35 million, Warriors of Virtue earned just over $6 million domestically, making it one of 1997’s biggest commercial disappointments. Critics were equally harsh, and the ambitious franchise plans never materialized beyond a direct to video sequel released in 2002.
Despite that, the movie has quietly developed a cult following over the years. Collectors still seek out the original action figures, while nostalgic movie fans continue introducing the film to new audiences who can’t believe a movie about martial arts kangaroos actually exists.

Final Thoughts
Not every movie needs to be a masterpiece to be memorable.
Warriors of Virtue is ambitious, wonderfully strange, occasionally cheesy, and packed with enough martial arts action and practical creature effects to make it a fascinating time capsule of late ’90s family filmmaking.
If you missed it back in 1997, don’t expect the next great fantasy epic. Instead, expect a movie that swings for the fences with an original idea Hollywood probably wouldn’t greenlight today, and that’s exactly what makes it worth revisiting.
For fans of forgotten cult classics, Warriors of Virtue remains one of the most unique martial arts fantasy films of its generation.

Woman Killed BF in Front of Child After He Made Her Move Out
A South Carolina woman was sentenced to prison time after she shot and killed her boyfriend in front of her 3-year-old son after he made her move out of his apartment.
Zaria Aiyanna Owens was found guilty on Thursday, July 16, on counts of voluntary manslaughter and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime over the August 2023 death of Tyquirez Rashad Sims.
After the jury found her guilty, Owens, 25, was sentenced to serve 21 years in prison on the voluntary manslaughter charge. She was also sentenced to an additional five years in prison for the weapon possession charge, which the court determined would run concurrently.
Owens learned her fate after the incident took place outside of an apartment complex in Spartanburg before 9 p.m. on August 22, 2023.
Prosecutors said that a friend told investigators that the couple had been arguing after Sims, 21, asked Owens to move out of his apartment, according to a courtroom report from WSPA.
The argument escalated and Owens took Sims’ gun and phone away from him, and he followed her to her car.
Owens and Sims’ fight only continued to escalate, and she pointed the gun at him. Sims then went back inside the apartment before he returned with the defendant’s 3-year-old son. Sims took the boy over to Owens’ car so she would leave, but Owens aimed the gun at him and fired the weapon.
After she shot Sims, Owens got her son and fled the scene in her car. Police later found the vehicle at an apartment complex, while Owens turned herself in to police the following morning.
While speaking to investigators, Owens initially tried to claim she shot Sims in self-defense. However, she eventually said she was reaching for her son when she saw Sims push the child toward her and the toddler stumbled. Owens then admitted to picking up the gun and shooting Sims.
First responders found Sims dead at the scene and reported that he had been shot one time in the head. Prosecutors stated during the trial that Sims was several feet away from the shooter at the time she discharged the weapon.
Sims was a new father at the time of his death, with his child being just 6 months old.
Following his death, Deputy Solicitor Spenser Smith shared that Sims came from a tight-knit family.
“Tyquirez had a loving family and had become a father several months before his death,” Smith said, per the outlet. “This is a tragic case of domestic violence that has impacted two families and two young children.”
Smith continued, “Ms. Owens killed Tyquirez Sims in front of her son and now that child will grow up without his mother.”
