Lionel Richie’s highly anticipated summer tour got off to a frightening start after the music icon was forced to abruptly stop his opening-night performance due to an unexpected health issue.

Fans packed into the Grand Casino Arena expecting a night of timeless hits, but instead watched the legendary singer struggle through his set before the concert was ultimately canceled.

The unsettling moment has now sparked concern as audiences await updates on the remainder of his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

Lionel Richie launched his latest tour on Wednesday night at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was set to headline after Earth, Wind & Fire opened the evening.

The concert appeared to be progressing as planned until the 77-year-old unexpectedly paused the show after performing “Three Times A Lady” from behind the piano.

It initially seemed like a brief break, but quickly turned into something much more serious. Richie announced an unscheduled intermission before leaving the stage, and members of his band followed him off just minutes later.

More than 40 minutes passed before saxophonist Dino Soldo returned to address the anxious audience. “Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well,” Soldo announced per the Daily Mail, adding, “He won’t be able to continue. Additional information will be available.”

Richie’s team has yet to publicly explain what led to the abrupt end of the concert, leaving fans searching for answers after the disappointing opening night.

Richie Showed Signs Something Was Wrong Before The Cancellation

Although the announcement surprised many inside the arena, concertgoers later revealed there had been warning signs throughout the performance that Lionel Richie was not feeling his best.

Videos shared on social media showed the legendary performer repeatedly stopping to sit down during his performance of “Dancing On The Ceiling.” Witnesses also claimed Richie admitted he was feeling “dizzy” while still trying to finish the show.

Despite the obvious discomfort, the singer continued singing rather than relying on a guide vocal. One clip showed him carefully making his way across the stage before suddenly sitting on the edge of a large stepped platform.

He remained seated for less than 10 seconds before standing again and attempting to continue. However, less than half a minute later, he sat down once more on the opposite side of the stage while continuing the song.

According to reports, saxophonist Soldo eventually joined Richie by taking a seat beside him during the performance, possibly hinting that something was clearly amiss.

Even as he struggled, Richie attempted to reassure the audience with humor and honesty. After sitting at the piano for what became his final song of the evening, Richie reportedly acknowledged what he was experiencing.

One fan recalled that the Grammy award winner reminded the crowd to listen to their bodies. “He said he has been in this business long enough, if you feel dizzy you sit down! And if you don’t feel right, you sit down!” the fan explained.

Minnesota Star Tribune reporter Jon Bream quoted the music icon delivering the same message with a little more edge, telling concertgoers, “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your *ss down.”

Over the years, Richie’s interaction with fans has left many talking. The television personality believes genuine kindness is one of the biggest secrets to surviving decades in the spotlight.

Speaking on the “Artist Friendly” podcast with his son-in-law Joel Madden in March, the music icon explained that fame only works if celebrities truly enjoy interacting with people.

“I hope you like people,” Richie said per The Blast, noting that many stars spend years begging for attention before becoming famous and then suddenly wanting to be left alone.

Richie revealed he intentionally acknowledges fans because he remembers what it felt like to be “invisible” before success.

Rather than ignoring someone who was nervous to approach him, he would make an effort to smile, say hello, or stop for a conversation.

The Grammy winner also revealed that small gestures toward staff and crew members go a long way, insisting it takes only seconds to thank someone.
