It was less than a month ago that box office history was made by Antoine Fuqua’s musical biopic, Michael. After a strong run of $900 million in most global theaters, the film opened in Japan and finally broke the long-standing biopic barrier. In mid-July, it was confirmed that Michael had become the first-ever billion-dollar biopic in cinema history. In total, the film has generated $1.016 billion in global revenue, leaving many to wonder if the story of the King of Pop will inspirea sequel.
Despite backlash from critics, such a big box office triumph will unsurprisingly encourage higher-ups to start work on a Michael sequel (perhaps just titled“Jackson“) with Lionsgate film chief, Adam Fogelson, even saying, “We are really excited about the progress we’re making with respect to a second ‘Michael’ film. All the conversations that we’ve been having with all of the appropriate parties continue to go exceptionally well.” This box office success quickly transformed into a streaming triumph after Michael moved to PVOD platforms. However, the arrival of the year’s latest billion-dollar movie at the box office has just helped knock Michaelfrom his perch.
At the time of writing, the newest #1 movie on the global iTunes charts is Spider-Man: No Way Home, as fans either remind themselves of what came before or binge the previous installments in preparation for the latest. This quick rise to the top of a chart usually reserved for new releases is no doubt courtesy of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s arrival in theaters, with millions flocking to see Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker as he faces a world that has forgotten him and a new threat with a tragic past.

After No Way Home became one of the decade’s highest-grossing movies so far, expectations were high for the world’s most famous webslinger’s box office return. However, no one quite expected just how well the film would perform.
