Seventeen years ago, Megan Fox played a monster in one of the only 2000s teen comedies that really holds up — and as this satire is not without its screams, it’s also become one of the best horror cult classics of the century. There are very few cringe-worthy millennial jokes, and all in all, the movie has only gotten better with age. Over the last 20 years, audiences have only become more willing to get behind — and really enjoy — a succubus killing creepy guys, finally giving the movie the attention it deserved in 2009.
This fall, you can reevaluate one of cinema’s biggest comebacks for yourself, as Jennifer’s Body is now streaming on Hulu and Pluto TV. The movie also stars Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody, J.K. Simmons, Amy Sedaris, Kyle Gallner, and Johnny Simmons. In addition, Chris Pratt plays a police officer in one of his first big-screen roles. Jennifer’s Body was directed by Karyn Kusamaand written by Diablo Cody, hot on the heels of her Academy Award win forJuno. That’s a winning combination on paper, but it took a while for the result to be appreciated.
Seyfried actually plays the protagonist, a shy high school student aptly named Needy (short for Anita) whose popular best friend Jennifer, played by Fox, has become possessed by a demon and must commit murder to survive. Needy tries to help Jennifer as her killing spree continues. But does she kind of have a point? Who’s actually protecting who? Is this a love story? As with so many things when you’re a teenager, the situation is complicated.

⚡ AC/DC

You are pure, undiluted rock energy. You don’t need tricks, trends, or theatrical gimmicks — you have something more powerful: a riff that hits like a thunderbolt and an attitude that never wavers. Like AC/DC, you understand that simplicity executed with absolute conviction is its own form of genius. You’re the person in the room who doesn’t overthink it, doesn’t pretend, and never turns the volume down. The highway to hell is a state of mind — and you’ve been on it since day one.
👅 The Rolling Stones

You’ve got swagger that can’t be taught. Rooted in the blues and soaked in street-level attitude, you move through life with a loose, dangerous elegance that draws people in without ever trying too hard. Like the Stones, you’ve seen it all, done most of it, and somehow look better for it. You’re not chasing perfection — you’re chasing truth, groove, and that electric moment when everything clicks. Can’t always get what you want? You tend to get it anyway.

👑 Queen
You are magnificent, and you know it — not from arrogance, but from an unshakeable sense of self that has never needed anyone’s permission. Like Queen, you defy every category people try to place you in. You blend the epic with the intimate, the operatic with the anthemic, the serious with the playful. You live boldly, love fiercely, and perform every aspect of your life as though the whole world is watching. Because sometimes it is. We are the champions — and so are you.

🎸 The Beatles
You have the rarest of gifts: the ability to make something that feels both deeply personal and universally human. Like The Beatles, you’re a natural connector — someone whose warmth, curiosity, and creative instincts draw people together across every divide. You believe in melody, in craftsmanship, and in the quiet power of a song that says exactly what someone needed to hear. You’ve changed the people around you just by being who you are. All you need is love — and you give it generously.

Why Is ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Considered a Cult Classic?
Jennifer’s Body grossed $31 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. As it turns out, Hollywood did not know how to properly market a feminist horror comedy in 2009. According to Cody in a retrospective Vox interview, she wanted to reach female audiences, but the executives focused on trying to get male fans into theaters. Considering how blatantly misandrist Jennifer is, however, that seems like an uphill battle doomed to fail. Critics gave Jennifer’s Body mixed reviews that often missed the film’s intentions as well. “Just what we were waiting for,” opened Roger Ebert‘s original review, “Twilight for boys, with Megan Fox in the Robert Pattinson role, except that I recall Pattinson was shirtless.” And he gave it four out of five stars! Imagine what the people who didn’t like it were saying.
In recent years, especially after the MeToo movement brought the themes to the surface, Jennifer’s Body started to resonate more. It’s still kind of difficult to get certain audiences on board with movies that are feminist and funny. Even the act of insisting that empowerment doesn’t have to be dour makes you sound a little desperate… but it’s true! Anyway, the film has been reevaluated by critics and audiences alike, and is now considered a queer feminist cult classic. It only took a decade and some change!
