One of the biggest romantic comedies of the late 2010s has made a streaming resurgence years after its release. This feature became a phenomenon, inspiring actors who had quit acting to return to the industry, and it played a huge role in representation. Not to mention, it’s still being watched to this day, albeit through a unique medium.
Recently, Crazy Rich Asians made a comeback on streaming, landing at #10 on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies chart worldwide, sitting underneath The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants. For those who haven’t seen it, Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel Chu (Wu), who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), as he attends his best friend’s wedding. She doesn’t realize that her boyfriend’s family is extremely wealthy and that his mother, Eleanor (Yeoh), doesn’t approve of their relationship. Since its release, Crazy Rich Asians has been highly praised, earning a 91% Certified Fresh Critics Score and a 78% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also made well beyond its reported $30 million budget, earning $293 million worldwide. At the moment, it has been confirmed that Crazy Rich Asians will receive a follow-up as a TV series, but updates have been scarce lately.

Crazy Rich Asians has become a streaming hit, and it’s also been considered one of the best “airplane movies,” referring to titles passengers watch during flights through a plane’s in-flight entertainment system.
