‘Neagley’ Showrunner Officially Confirms Season 2’s Storylines Are Already Fully Written

Summary
In the Prime Video TV series Neagley, a spin-off of the hit Reacher, Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) is a private investigator in Chicago, where she’s learned that a friend from her past has been killed in a mysterious but suspicious incident that proves to be no accident. Like her mentor Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson), she is hell-bent on justice and even more focused when it’s so personal. Her skill set makes her uniquely qualified to make those responsible answer for their crimes. But with the assistance of a rag-tag team – Detective Hudson Riley (Greyston Holt), Renee Birdwhistle (Adeline Rudolph), and Keno (Jasper Jones) – who can each provide help in their own ways, Neagley realizes that they’re actually stronger together and she doesn’t have to do everything on her own.
Collider recently got the opportunity to chat with Nicholas Wootton, who is the co-creator alongside Nick Santora, about why the arc of the team is one of his favorite parts of the series, that they’ve already figured things out for Season 2, wanting to explore Renee’s missing brother more deeply, digging into the Haphephobia that Frances is trying to understand, the importance of Neagley shaking Reacher’s hand for the first time, the evolving dynamic between Frances and Hudson, Renee and Keno’s kiss, and whether the team could ever expand.
‘Neagley’s Co-Creator Loves the Team That Frances Is Forming Around Her
“All she wants to do is keep people at arm’s distance, and they are just burrowing their way in.”
COLLIDER: I love that Frances Neagley is going to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves, which essentially makes her a hero. At the same time, she’s not only dealing with her own trauma, but she doesn’t let the trauma that Hudson, Renee, and Keno are all dealing with stop her from wanting them to back her up and be a part of her team. What do you love about the bond that the team is forming, and what do you hope to dig into further with them for a possible Season 2 and beyond?
NICK WOOTTON: The arc of the team is one of my favorite parts of this. Neagley begins the story with these people where all she wants to do is ditch them. She’s like, “All I want to do is not talk to any one of these people,” and they just keep forcing their way into this case and her life. It’s very thematic to her entire world. All she wants to do is keep people at arm’s distance, and they are just burrowing their way in. I love that stuff, and I love where it goes, going forward. Ultimately, they become her built family. That would obviously continue into Season 2, should we be so lucky.
We have seeded stuff for the other characters, as well. There is more to be mined with Hudson’s family connection in crime. There’s more to be mined with Renee and her missing brother. There are all these other elements that we’re seeding in. Also, Neagley and her Haphephobia we get to a point with, but that’s a deep-seated trauma that doesn’t just take a few weeks to get over. We’d see that reverberate into even more intimate personal relationships. We’re very hopeful and excited for Season 2.
In the finale, Renee talks about wanting to find her brother, which keeps it very present in the minds of the viewers. Do you want to dig deeper into that in Season 2, or is that something you’d want to hold off on for a bit? Have you thought about how soon you want to explore that?
WOOTTON: We’d totally go into it in Season 2. There’s a big twist in there and a whole thing. It’s a really fun story for Renee, and Keno is tied into it as well because he’s helping her find him and it’s the discovery of who he is. We have a whole storyline for it. We have it all figured out. It’s all written.
It Was Important for Neagley’s Handshake Breakthrough To Be With Reacher
“It was very early on in the development that that was going to be the final moment with Reacher.”
Did you always know that you were going to get to a point this season where Neagley would shake hands with Reacher for the first time? Why was it important to do that before the end of the season?
WOOTTON: Because it shows an arc. It shows that her development is incremental, and we thought it was the best way to do that. It’s Reacher. It’s not Hudson. It’s not a kiss, which I think may have been expected. It’s just this very restrained handshake with somebody with whom she’s known for years and is enormously safe with and yet is able to take this leap. I think it was very early on in the development that that was going to be the final moment with Reacher.
Was that “I can’t believe it, you’ve got soft hands” line always in the script?
WOOTTON: Yes! It was very early on that that came up.
She’s probably the only person that could get away with saying that.
WOOTTON: Totally! You’re exactly right. And then, he would laugh at it. No, nobody else could say that.
Neagley and Hudson Are Each Outsiders Who Learn That They Might Actually Get More Done Together
“Hudson is an outsider to his family, and Neagley is an outsider to the world.”
I love how the relationship between Neagley and Hudson continues to evolve over this season. There’s the funny moment when he says, “I like you even though you’re not always nice,” and they clearly respect each other. What do you like most about that dynamic between the characters, but also just watching what Maria Sten and Greyston Holt brought to that relationship?
WOOTTON: I love watching them work. They were so good together. It was seeing two people who I think feel that they are very fully formed. Hudson is like, “I am not my family. I am me. I’m a cop. Deal with it.” For Neagley, it’s, “Back off. I’m a lone wolf.” It’s two people that come together, who feel that they are extraordinarily formed, and then realize when they come together that they are not. They really have space in each other’s lives for each other, they just don’t quite know what that looks like. It’s that awkward coming together of those two outsiders. Ultimately, Hudson is an outsider to his family, and Neagley is an outsider to the world. To see them coming together was very fun. And also, Neagley being like, “The last thing I ever want to do is have any relationship with a guy like you,” and yet it blossoms as the season goes on.
There’s something so funny about Neagley not caring that Hudson doesn’t want to have anything to do with this family. If it’s useful for her, she wants him to just go talk to them and get it done.
WOOTTON: Totally. He’s like, “I haven’t talked to my dad in two years.” And she’s like, “Just go to the prison and talk to him.” It’s great.
Renee and Keno May Each Interpret That ‘Neagley’ Finale Kiss in Different Ways
“It’s a tremendous complication for her and for him.”
I love that Renee kissing Keno in the finale before she walks away. What did you think that moment meant? How do you think their dynamic will continue to evolve? What do you love about that relationship?
WOOTTON: Ultimately, it’s a tremendous complication for her and for him. Maybe they each take it a different way. There are two interpretations of that kiss. His is definitely going to be one, and hers another. We had a really fun time with that throughout the season. Going into this other element of her life, which is this familial issue, is something that we’ll see investigated throughout the season and there’s a complication regarding that. They are two people who kind of want nothing to do with each other and do not exist on the same planet, and yet somehow manage to find respect for one another. He certainly is in love with her. She’s not necessarily.
Since you’ve obviously thought about the show and the characters quite a bit, would you want to add more characters to this team in the future? Have you thought about whether you would bring in other people to work with them? Do you feel like it’s good to just keep the main team at four people?
WOOTTON: Right now, we really like the main team at four people. Going forward, there are definitely more elements that come into the second season as we’re designing it. They have a tough path, those new people. The core four are what we’re really developing.
