When my students learn that I’m an entertainment writer, they always want to talk about their favorite movies and TV shows. Earlier this year, I talked to a student who had recently seen Scream 7 and was eager to know what score I gave it in my review. When I told him three stars, he asked, with perfect comic timing, “out of five?!?” I had to explain to him that I grade movies the same way I grade research papers. While a three-star review might not sound so bad, it translates to a 60, meaning that I thought the movie barely got a passing grade.

I was thinking about my method of scoring movies while rewatching 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness (now streaming for free on Tubi). As a remake of The Wrath of Khan, it’s absolutely awful, and as a sequel to 2009’s Star Trek, it’s not much better because it retreads the lazy “supervillain with a nearly-unstoppable ship” gimmick. But if you examine the movie on its own quirky merits, you’ll find a surprising amount to love. Now that Paramount has finally killed the Kelvinverse in favor of boldly going in a new direction, it’s the perfect time to revisit a sequel that is far better than you probably remember. 

Ripping Off The Band-Aid

Before I get into what Star Trek Into Darkness did right, let’s dive into what you’ve probably been screaming at me about for the last minute or so: what it did wrong. First, reusing Khan as a villain was just wildly lazy, forcing audiences to compare this movie to The Wrath of Khan. Into Darkness suffers from this comparison in a big way. It’s also awkward to replace Ricardo Montalban with lily-white Benedict Cumberbatch. Not only is the race-swapping offensive on the face of it, but the big reveal that this is Khan means nothing to the characters, who had never even met the guy in this universe before.

Like Star Trek (2009), Into Darkness focuses too much on action and not enough on exploring strange new worlds. It relies on some major plot contrivances, like the universe-breaking revelation that Khan’s blood can bring people back to life. Speaking of Khan, the whole plot about his people secretly being put inside proton torpedo tubes never made any sense. The plot in general is fairly slipshod, and the fact that the climax involves the man who shuns emotions screaming and beating someone is downright embarrassing.

Now, stand down from red alert, haters, and we can dive into your favorite subject: why this Star Trek sequel is much better than you remember.

The Killer Cast

Call me a fanboy if you must, but I feel like the Kelvinverse Star Trek films were perfectly cast. Instead of going for physical resemblance, the casting director found talents who matched the vibe of The Original Series actors. Chris Pine oozes with the cocky self-assurance of William Shatner’s Kirk, while Zachary Quinto channels the broody intensity of Leonard Nimoy’s Spock. Karl Urban, meanwhile, practically disappears into the role of Dr. McCoy, echoing the performance of DeForest Kelley so weird that it’s almost creepy. In Into Darkness, everyone is more charismatic than ever, and watching these highly skilled officers do their thing is chicken soup for the sci-fi lover’s soul.

The Kelvinverse movies weren’t perfect, and Into Darkness may be particularly flawed. But these movies expertly matched energy with the TV shows that had come before, casting actors who perfectly bounced off each other’s manic energy and gelled as a believable crew. Again, that easygoing chemistry is even more present in Into Darkness than Star Trek. Character relationships (especially between Kirk and Spock) are deeper, and explosive personalities have (fittingly enough) been cooled down by the vacuum of space. Basically, if you watch the franchise to see hyper-capable geniuses tackle impossible problems, you’ll love how Star Trek Into Darkness plays out. 

Lore And World-Building

One of the most interesting parts of Star Trek Into Darkness is how it builds off existing lore while doing some truly wild worldbuilding. For example, the film merges together some very beloved lore (about Khan and his people surviving into the future in stasis pods) with some very hated lore (Section 31 being a rogue, amoral agency at the heart of Starfleet). In this changed timeline, Section 31 finds and weaponizes Khan and his genetically augmented army. Now, how they go about this is almost mind-bogglingly dumb, but seeing Section 31 use Khan is like watching a “What If” Deep Space Nine episode. 

It’s also interesting that Carol Marcus’ dad worked for Section 31. Does this mean that in the prime universe, David Marcus’ grandfather is a secret Starfleet war criminal? Additionally, it’s kind of fascinating to think about the sheer number of resources and other assets that have been diverted so that Admiral Marcus could build a killer dreadnaught on the down low. Is it a permanent side effect of Nero’s multiple attacks on Starfleet that this organization has become paranoid and warlike? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, if you like to ponder weird Star Trek lore, Into Darkness is likely to give your brain a tingle.

The Action’s Pretty Solid

Many critics of Star Trek Into Darkness have dismissed it as a dumb action movie. Now, is it dumb? Of course. And is it an action movie? Sure. But what doesn’t get enough attention is that the action in this movie is done surprisingly well. For example, the early scenes of Kirk violating the Prime Directive are pretty silly, but the frenzied action feels like a pleasant crossover between Star Trek and Indiana Jones. Later, scenes of Khan’s terrifyingly efficient fighting help underscore how he once terrified the entire Earth. Arguably, he (and, by extension, his Augments) have never been scarier.

The space suit scene is full of thrills, and watching Kirk narrowly make it aboard the other ship always gives me chills. The fight between the USS Enterprise and the much larger USS Vengeance will keep you on the edge of your seat, all while pushing our crew to the limits. Plus, from MacGyver-ing up some IEDs to going full action hero ‘roid rage, the Spock of this movie is unlike any version we have seen before or since. The action is breathless and unpredictable. For better or for worse, you never know what this movie will do from scene to scene, and there’s a certain lunatic thrill in following a plot just daring you to piece it together.

Stream Me Up, Scotty

Have I convinced you that it’s time to give Star Trek Into Darkness another shot? Or maybe you want to hate-watch the whole thing again so you can tear me a new one in the comments? Sister Wives fans are happy for Meri Brown starting her new life without Kody. But some fans can’t help but wonder if Kody Brown wanted to embrace monogamy, he might have chosen the wrong wife.

Actor Russell Andrews announced that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS.

“I am a person living with ALS. I was diagnosed in the late fall of last year. It’s been humbling,” Andrews, 64, said during a Saturday, May 16, appearance on CNN’s The Story Is With Elex Michaelson alongside his fiancée, actress Erica Tazel.

Andrews, whose credits include roles in Straight Outta Compton and Better Call Saul, said he first experienced symptoms of the neurodegenerative disease, which affects the brain and spinal cord, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I thought I had a stroke during COVID. It was a stressful time,” he said, adding that his health issues were compounded by the fact that he was unable to work during the pandemic, as well as the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes.

“There were moments there were twitches. There were things that I thought I was having pinched nerves in my neck and they were quite frequent,” he explained. “I was not able to do things that I normally do. I was dropping cups and glasses, and in the night, it felt like things were running up and down my arm at different times, and it was the nerves.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, “ALS often begins with muscle twitching and weakness in an arm or leg, trouble swallowing, or slurred speech. Eventually ALS affects the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe. There is no cure for this fatal disease, but research into new therapies is ongoing.”

CNN reported that Tazel, whose credits include a role on the hit show Justified, is stepping into the role of caretaker for her fiancé.

“The processing is a process. When he originally shared with me, I say I was uncharacteristically calm,” Tazel, 49, said. “In a way, it was an answer to a lot of questions that we had. There were certain things that we started to see that were different. For example, it took him longer to clean the pool. The way he walked, there was a subtle little [change] … things like that. I had questions. I was like, ‘Something is definitely wrong,’ and so we now know what it was.”

Tazel told CNN anchor Elex Michaelson that she has learned “there are cases” where love “is truly unconditional,” as she has stood by Andrews’ side.

“When he shared the news with me, again, there was not a sigh of relief, but some understanding of what was happening, and I looked at him across the room, and I said, ‘At least now we know what it is and I still want to be your wife,’” the actress said.

Andrews, Tazel and his family have also received support from the ALS Network, which advocates for the detection, treatment and cure of the disease.

Andrews’ reveal on Saturday comes amid ALS Awareness Month, which takes place during the month of May.

Sources close to the former couple claim that Jason Biggs’ major physical transformation led to noticeable changes in both his confidence and overall mindset.

The “American Pie” star revealed earlier this year that he had lost 35 pounds after dealing with cholesterol concerns, leading him to overhaul his eating habits and fitness routine. According to insiders, the transformation did more than improve his health.

“Jason definitely has changed since his weight loss transformation. He lost a lot of weight and it definitely helped boost his ego,” one source told the Daily Mail.

The insider added that the actor may not have expected the dramatic results when he first started making healthier choices. 

“I don’t think he was wanting to lose that much weight but it happened and he’s proud of the results like any one who lost 40 pounds or more would be,” they noted.

The insider further suggested that the change slowly created distance inside the marriage as Biggs adjusted to a renewed sense of confidence and attention.

Biggs’ Career Comeback Reportedly Added More Pressure At Home

Insiders also claimed Jason Biggs’ recent career resurgence brought major stress into his personal life. 

The 48-year-old made his directorial debut last year with “Untitled Home Invasion Romance,” a project, sources say, that became emotionally exhausting for him.

“He had his first big directorial debut last year, and that was a really stressful time for him,” the insider explained.

They noted that trying to stay in the spotlight and continue putting out projects that were just as entertaining as what he was known for previously could be difficult.

According to the source, Biggs placed enormous pressure on himself to stay relevant in Hollywood after years of being closely tied to his breakout comedy success.

“But he has this reputation and he knows that and he puts pressure on himself to do things that are going to get just as much attention,” the insider revealed, adding, “Jason has had more stress in his life than Jenny lately and I think that’s definitely caused a bit of a wedge.”

Despite the challenges, sources stressed there was no explosive scandal behind the split.

Jason Biggs And Jenny Mollen Tried To Save Their Marriage Through Therapy

Biggs and Mollen were open for years about attending couples therapy, and insiders now say those sessions may have prolonged the marriage longer than expected.

According to one source, the pair’s marriage would have ended two to three years ago if they hadn’t attended couples therapy.

Biggs and Mollen first met while filming “My Best Friend’s Girl” in 2008 before quickly falling for one another. They became engaged that same year and secretly eloped just months later, before later celebrating with a larger ceremony in Napa attended by 40 guests.

Over the years, they welcomed two sons together, Sid and Lazio, while frequently sharing candid details about their relationship struggles. Back in 2016, Mollen openly praised therapy while discussing their marriage.

“We have been getting along at the end of the day because we have a therapist,” she told PEOPLE in 2016. The actress explained that having someone else convey her thoughts to Biggs made things better. 

Biggs strongly agreed at the time, noting that it wasn’t advisable to be married without having a therapist. He described getting one as a “preemptive strike.”

Biggs And Mollen Are Focused On Co-Parenting Their Sons

Even though the split shocked many fans, multiple insiders insist Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen are committed to staying close for the sake of their children.

One insider predicted the breakup would stay peaceful and drama-free. “I can not see them having a nasty divorce – and I don’t see them even rushing to get a divorce,” the source shared.

According to them, it was nearly impossible for the Hollywood stars’ long history to be forgotten overnight. The insider stressed that both stars remain completely focused on protecting their family dynamic.

“Their kids are truly their priority during this time. Jason and Jenny are still going to be very much apart of each other’s lives,” they explained. 

Another source echoed the same sentiment, noting, “They both mutually decided that they would be better as co-parents and friends than anything else,” the insider explained.

Jason Biggs And Jenny Mollen Previously Opened Up About Their Personal Struggles

Long before announcing their separation, Mollen had publicly admitted that she struggled with insecurities at times during their marriage.

In a 2019 op-ed titled “I Used to Be Jealous of My Husband’s Ex, Then I Became a Mom,” the author detailed her unhealthy obsession with one of Biggs’ former girlfriends.

“In my younger years (read: most of my 30s), I did drive-bys down her block, posted pics of myself in cute outfits I hoped she’d stumble across while googling me, and reeled her into interacting with me by finding things of hers around our house and gifting them back to her,” Mollen wrote.

Still, sources now insist the breakup was not caused by cheating or another outside relationship. “They really did just drift apart. There is no other party or anything like that. The relationship just ran its course,” an insider said.

Despite ending their marriage, those close to the pair believe Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen will remain deeply connected as friends, co-parents, and longtime partners who simply evolved in different directions.

John Stamos is honoring his late friend, actor and comedian Bob Saget, with a heartfelt birthday tribute, sharing emotional words and personal memories that celebrate their close friendship. The simple, yet impactful, message reflects the actor’s continued remembrance of Saget and highlights the lasting impact of their bond four years after his passing.

On May 17, John Stamos took to Instagram and shared a series of photos to honor his late friend, Bob Saget, on what would have been the comedian’s 70th birthday.

The carousel included a clip of Saget singing and several photos of the two of them together throughout the years. The last slide was a group shot of Saget and Stamos with their wives, Kelly Rizzo and Catilin McHugh, respectively, posing in front of the ocean, with the words “LAST PIC” written over it.

“We used to throw each other great birthday parties. Your 70th today would’ve been epic! I miss you and love you,” Stamos wrote in the caption. Hundreds of comments flooded the actor’s post, with many remembering Saget and wishing him a happy birthday in heaven.

The Two Actors Had A Rocky Start To Their Friendship

While Stamos and Saget had been exceptionally close for decades before Saget’s passing, they weren’t always the best of friends. The two met on the set of the ABC sitcom “Full House,” where they played the roles of brothers-in-law: Stamos as Jesse Katsopolis and Saget as Danny Tanner. The series ran for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995.

In Stamos’ memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” released in 2023, he wrote that he didn’t think Saget was right for his role, despite knowing he was talented. In his mind, Saget was a comedian whose main goal was to make people laugh, while he preferred working seriously and breaking apart scenes. “Bob and I tolerate each other and attempt to avoid interfering with each other’s creative processes, though it can be challenging,” Stamos wrote.

The two grew close, however, when they learned to accept each other’s artistic styles and supported one another amid personal tragedies.

John Stamos And Bob Saget Developed A Friendship Beyond The Camera

After “Full House” ended, Stamos and Saget remained close friends, celebrating each other’s victories and supporting one another through tough times. When the former’s father passed away in 2001, Saget stepped up and comforted his friend’s family, even taking on the duty of hosting the funeral. Stamos noted that they were already close at that time, but what the comedian did for him “cemented” their friendship.

In 2009, Stamos received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and Saget attended the ceremony, offering some kind words for his friend. “You are so talented and so loving… I will always be there for you and for your family because you are my brother,” Saget said.

Moreover, they stood by each other through their respective divorces, health scares, and other hardships.

Inside Bob Saget’s Death In 2022

Saget died in January 2022 at 65 years old while on his comedy tour. He was discovered deceased in his hotel room with abrasions and hemorrhaging on his scalp. The medical examiner listed his official cause of death as blunt head trauma.

His family released a statement explaining his passing and said, “They have concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep. No drugs or alcohol were involved.”
