Prime Video’s 3-Part Fantasy Series Is One of the Best on Any Streaming Platform
There are many thrilling fantasy series available to stream these days, but Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time is undeniably among the best. The three-season epic is based on Robert Jordan‘s lengthy book series of the same name, which provides all the action fantasy fans could ask for. First premiering in 2021, The Wheel of Time was one of the many shows aiming to take Game of Thrones‘ place after the HBO series ended, but it doesn’t try to replicate what came before, carving its own path with a sprawling fantasy world full of magic and unique lore.
The Wheel of Time features an ever-growing ensemble cast, beginning with a group of five small-town friends whom the enigmatic Aes Sedai Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) whisks away after realizing they have important roles to play in the coming conflict against the Dark One. This concept provides a high-stakes story full of unexpected twists. Although the series should have continued much longer, its three seasons have a lot to offer. With an expansive world, a unique story, and lovable characters, The Wheel of Time ranks among the best fantasy series around, despite not reaching the level of popularity others have.

The Wheel of Time quickly introduces a massive world, with deep lore and an impressive range of cultures that enrich the narrative. The overarching plotline features the characters getting wrapped up in a centuries-old battle between good and evil, as Rand (Josha Stradowski), Egwene (Madeleine Madden), Matt (Barney Harris and Dónal Finn), Nynaeve (Zoë Robins), and Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) each become central figures in the fight against rising darkness. With the Dark One’s followers, the Forsaken, chasing the heroes as they travel the world, no one is ever safe.
These lethal stakes add heightened drama to the story, which the series takes advantage of, introducing several elaborate cultures ranging from the Aiel to the Seanchan. These societies have their own priorities, fashions, histories, and approach to magic, which makes each new culture a compelling addition to the series, but also highlights just how difficult a task it is for Rand and his friends to unite the world in their war against the Dark One.

‘The Wheel of Time’s Characters Make the Fantasy Show a Must-Watch
While its thrilling story is reason alone to binge the series, The Wheel of Time wouldn’t be nearly as successful without its lovable characters and talented cast. Each lead has a distinct trait — Rand is protective; Matt, humorous; Nynaeve, stubborn; Perrin, quietly strong; and Egwene, ambitious — making the characters relatable while occasionally creating conflict. Though the cast grows quickly, the core characters remain the center of the story, becoming the heart of the series as they navigate their destinies alongside increasing political scheming. This allows the audience to become attached to each character, elevating the emotional investment as each of them embarks on dangerous missions.
Although it only ran for three seasons, Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time allowed its characters to grow into the leaders that the world needs through costly trials and heartbreaking losses. Throughout the series, the actors earn tremendous moments to display their characters’ evolution, such as Egwene’s Season 2 arc, where she truly comes into her power, or Perrin’s acceptance of his role as a leader in Season 3. With so many elements to the characters’ various journeys all playing into an epic conflict, Prime Video’s adaptation manages to balance both individual stories and world-shifting stakes. The Wheel of Time may have taken some time to reach its peak, but the three-season series delivers everything that fantasy fans could ask for.
