Ridley Scott hasn’t exactly had a banner year so far, though there was plenty of anticipation surrounding his return to sci-fi with The Dog Stars. Scott enlisted a trio of massive stars in Josh Brolin, Jacob Elordi, and Margaret Qualley for his new sci-fi movie, but as it winds down its run at the box office, it’s set to finish as one of Scott’s lowest grossing movies ever. Scott clearly has bigger plans in the sci-fi genre, though — he announced just a few weeks ago that he’s developing a new Alien movie centered around Michael Fassbender’s character, David, from Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Scott may have taken a step back from directing as many movies in this advanced stage of his career, but he’s still heavily involved in many films as a producer through his Scott Free banner.
Ridley Scott is next in line to produce Blade Runner 2099, the first ever Blade Runner TV show set 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. The new series stars Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), and it’s coming to Prime Video on November 25. Before the new series arrives on streaming, there’s no better time to rewatch one of the best sci-fi sequels ever made, Blade Runner 2049, which is finally streaming on Paramount Plus. The film has even had several runs into the top 10 this month after its long-awaited return to streaming. Scott did not direct Blade Runner 2049 after helming the original Blade Runner, but he settled on the perfect director in Denis Villeneuve to step behind the camera on the film.
What Is ‘Blade Runner 2049’ About?
The official synopsis for Blade Runner 2049, which earned equally impressive scores of 88% from critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, reads as follows: “Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new Blade Runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former Blade Runner who’s been missing for 30 years.” Neither Ryan Gosling‘s K nor Harrison Ford‘s Rick Deckard are expected to appear in Blade Runner 2099 later this year — the show is also confirmed to only be one season.
