While Sony is no doubt overjoyed with the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which shattered numerous box-office records to emerge as one of the 10 highest-grossing movies of all time, the studio also remains infamous for its attempt to mimic the success of the MCU. Around a decade ago, Sony announced plans to put together a shared universe of films centered on characters in the Spider-Man universe — in other words, the Marvel characters that it still had rights to. The original plan was for these characters to be looped into the series headlined by Andrew Garfield, but when Garfield’s second film as Spider-Man underperformed, the plans were changed. Tom Hollandstepped into the role, and began appearing in solo movies distributed by Sony and MCU movies distributed by Disney. Meanwhile, a series of disastrous spin-offs released over the course of a decade sank Sony’s ambitions.
The final nail in the coffin came only two years ago, by which time Sony’s Spider-Man Universe had developed a reputation in popular culture that was hard to shake. Something similar happened with the DC Extended Universe, whose last few installments struggled both critically and commercially. While Sony’s three Venom movies starring Tom Hardy did solid business, three other films emerged as the most infamous superhero projects of all time. The charge was led by Morbius, which grossed around $165 million worldwide against a reported budget of $80 million and received a 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Then came Madame Web, which grossed $100 million on a reported budget of $100 million, and scored an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The franchise ended for good with Kraven the Hunter, which grossed around $60 million against a reported budget of $130 million, and was slammed with a 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by J.C. Chandor and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe, and Alessandro Nivola, the movie’s failure was blamed by Sony on the franchise’s tarnished reputation.
