The 21st Century’s Smartest Sci-Fi Gem Lands on Free Streaming
The 21st century has been blessed with some of the finest sci-fi movies of all time. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind turned the whirlwind of modern relationships into a mind-bending tale; Children of Men brought a dark and dystopian story that feels evermore relatable; Pixar delivered heartwarming romance with gorgeous animation in WALL·E; and Christopher Nolan had us all hanging on the wobble of a spinning top in Inception. But for some, the greatest sci-fi movie of the century so far is Alex Garland‘s Ex Machina.
Released in 2015, not only did Ex Machina stun both audiences and critics, but, as one of A24’s earliest releases, it helped establish the studio’s reputation as one of the defining names in modern film. Boasting stunning performances from the likes of Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander, and a plot that feels as relevant as ever today, Ex Machina is the proud owner of a 92% critics’ score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus on the site reading, “Ex Machina leans heavier on ideas than effects, but it’s still a visually polished piece of work — and an uncommonly engaging sci-fi feature.”
If you have yet to catch this defining 21st-century feature, you’re in luck. This March, Ex Machina will be available to stream for free on Plex. If you don’t believe Rotten Tomatoes, then listen to Collider’s ever-reliable Perri Nemiroff, who reviewed the movie at SXSW in 2015 and wrote, “Ex Machina is a strong feature and a huge achievement in a number of ways. There’s a surprising amount of very effective humor courtesy of Isaac’s character, there’s an extremely riveting scenario at the core of the film, and there’s also tons of stunning visual work to admire as well.”
Was ‘Ex Machina’ a Box Office Hit?
Considering its relatively low budget of $13 million and a relatively reduced theatrical release, peaking over just one weekend at 2,004 theaters, Ex Machina made the most of its box office run. In total, the movie earned $38.2 million worldwide, split between a domestic haul of $25.4 million and a further $12.8 million from overseas markets. At the time of its release, it became the highest-grossing A24 movie of all time worldwide, although this record has since been broken several times.
Ex Machina will be available to stream on Plex this March. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
