The Battlestar Galactica Episode With A Secret, Sexy Musical Parody

Strange New Worlds has been a generally beloved Star Trek show, one that proudly carries the banner of The Original Series. However, the show has taken a few big, creative swings that rubbed fans the wrong way. This includes a musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody,” that was pretty bad. Many musical fans like myself disliked it because the songs weren’t nearly as good as Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s “Once More, With Feeling.” Others disliked the premise itself, believing that a goofy musical episode didn’t really work for a franchise that has generally (minus the occasional episodes featuring Q, the holodecks, the Ferengi, etc.) taken itself seriously.
A musical episode is the last thing that you’ll get from Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. Former Star Trek writer Moore designed his series to be the tonal opposite of Trek in almost every way, realistically portraying humanity on the verge of extinction after a genocidal attack from a bunch of killer robots. Accordingly, most Galactica episodes are grim and gritty, but there’s one notable exception: “Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down,” a Season 1 episode that features a surplus of jokes and humorous situations. It also features a Strange New Worlds-esque musical parody: an opera song whose Italian lyrics are all about how sexy Tricia Helfer’s Cylon is!
Secret, Sexy Lyrics
“Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down” is the closest thing that Battlestar Galactica came to making a comedy episode. It still focuses on relatively serious stuff, including the returned Ellen Tigh making her husband’s alcoholism worse and Dr. Baltar’s ongoing work on the Cylon detector. But it’s also an episode where Ellen Tigh rubs her foot on Apollo’s crotch and makes every single social situation she’s in hilariously inappropriate. One thing that isn’t overtly funny is Baltar listening to opera while working in his lab. It’s easy to overlook because it’s such a trope. Intense British guy in space unwinding with opera? Patrick Stewart did it first, pal!
However, Baltar wasn’t listening to any established opera that anyone watching would be familiar with. This is actually an original song from Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary. When the soundtrack came out for Season 1, the liner notes included a translation for the Italian lyrics. As it turns out, the song is very meta: it’s playing while Baltar is in his lab, talking and flirting with the Six Cylon that lives in his mind. Accordingly, the lyrics are about her as well as the bizarre situation Baltar finds himself in.
The lyrics to this custom Battlestar Galactica opera are as follows: “Woe upon your Cylon heart / There’s a toaster in your head/ And it wears high heels / Number Six calls to you / The Cylon Detector beckons / Your girlfriend is a toaster / Woe upon your Cylon heart / Alas, disgrace! Alas, sadness and misery! / The toaster has a pretty dress / Red like its glowing spine / Number Six whispers / By your command.”
Lyrics Explained? By Your Command
Most of the lyrics have a pretty straightforward meaning. Six is one of the Cylons, which the Battlestar Galactica crew has nicknamed “toasters.” The song focuses on how she’s Baltar’s “girlfriend” and how she “wears high heels” and “has a pretty dress,’ a reference to Six’s iconic outfit. Speaking of red, the song mentions the red, glowing spines that Cylons display when having sex. The song also speaks to Baltar’s anxiety that his detector will reveal that he is secretly a Cylon. As for “by your command,” that’s a twofer: it references how Six instructs Baltar and references a line frequently uttered by the Cylons in the original Battlestar Galactica series.
The song is pretty solid, especially if you’re a fan of opera. The lyrics are a little silly, but that’s fine: again, “Tigh Me Up and Tigh Me Down” is the silliest episode of Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. When making the show, Moore decided to lean in and create a science fiction show that was absolutely nothing like Star Trek. But in a stunning irony (or maybe, as Six says, through the will of the one, true god), Moore ended up doing a cheeky sci-fi musical parody decades before Strange New Worlds did it!

One of the most popular spy film franchises is set to make an epic comeback in a few years with Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond film, expected to arrive sometime in 2028. The leading man has yet to be chosen to succeed Daniel Craig, who last portrayed the iconic MI6 agent in 2021’s No Time to Die, marking his fifth and final appearance in the role. As the debate continues over who should inherit the mantle, now seems like the perfect time to revisit other spy franchises, including a fellow British favorite with as much potential as the James Bond films.
Inspired by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons’ comic book series, Kingsman originated in 2012 with its first film, Kingsman: The Secret Service, hitting theaters three years later. The film, directed by English filmmaker Matthew Vaughn from a script he co-wrote with Jane Goldman, starred Colin Firth and Taron Egerton, both of whom reprised their roles in the sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Another feature film followed in 2021, serving as a prequel, but it failed to reach the heights of its predecessors, nearly ending the acclaimed franchise.
Titled The King’s Man, the spy action film appears to have found redemption on global streaming. According to FlixPatrol, the movie ranked among the top ten most-watched films on HBO Max this week, fluctuating between the fifth and sixth positions. Several international territories — including Albania, Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Romania — have also seen The King’s Man climb to the number one spot on their charts. Vaughn returned to direct the film, based on a story by him and a screenplay he co-wrote with Karl Gajdusek.
‘The King’s Man’ Almost Ended Its Acclaimed Spy Franchise
With a budget of $95–100 million, The King’s Man grossed $37.2 million in the United States and Canada, along with $88.8 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $126 million. That made it the lowest-grossing feature film in the franchise. On top of that, it was a critical disappointment, with a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 183 reviews and an average score of 5.1/10. However, audiences appeared to enjoy the film more, as its Popcornmeter score stands at an impressive 80% based on more than 1,000 verified ratings.
Featured in The King’s Man’s ensemble cast are Ralph Fiennes as Orlando Oxford, the founding Kingsman Arthur; Gemma Arterton as Polly Wilkins, a maid and member of Orlando’s spy network who is also founding Kingsman Galahad; Rhys Ifans as Grigori Rasputin, an agent and second-in-command of The Shepherd; Matthew Goode as a devious Scotsman posing as an English officer in the British Army, Max Morton (a.k.a., The Shepherd).

Taylor Sheridan is the king of modern-day streaming, as the man behind a selection of the most-watched shows in the world. It all started with the ambitious Yellowstone, and has since expanded into the likes of Landman, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and The Madison. Next on the agenda for the prolific producer is a novel, titled How to Not Die in Prison, which will be released on June 23 by Simon & Schuster.

In anticipation of How to Not Die in Prison‘s arrival, fans continue to binge the smorgasbord of Sheridan shows on streaming, and, in doing so, have helped one of his newer projects reach an impressive milestone.
The first broadcast procedural in the Yellowstone universe, Marshals, debuted earlier this year to impressive viewing figures, with the premiere drawing 20.6 million multiplatform viewers over its first seven days. This helped the series become the most-watched new broadcast show of the season, as millions tuned in to see Luke Grimes return as Kayce in the shadow of selling the ranch to Rainwater (Gil Birmingham). Shortly after the premiere of Season 1, and thanks to instant success, Marshals was picked up for Season 2, with production having already begun.
‘Marshals’ Hits an Impressive Streaming Milestone
Almost a month since Marshals‘ first season finale, the series has hit a major streaming milestone, officially crossing 100 days on the Paramount+ charts in the U.S. However, the series can’t overcome the current crown-holder on Paramount+: Dutton Ranch. One of Sheridan’s darkest projects yet, the series recently aired its seventh episode, “Den of Sin,” and has been a mainstay at the top of the U.S. streaming charts. Following Rip (Cole Hauser) and Beth’s (Kelly Reilly) move to a new life in South Texas, the show neatly expands the Yellowstone canon without feeling tied to any source material, allowing for creative freedom and plenty of twists and turns.

Olympian David Hearn was arrested for allegedly touching the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool amid President Donald Trump’s allegations that vandalism occurred at the monument.
The canoeist, 67, told the Washington Post on Saturday, June 20, that he was taken into custody on suspicion of misdemeanor destruction of government property the previous day and detained for five hours before eventually being released. Hearn has been ordered to answer the charge in a Washington D.C. Superior Court on July 9.
Per Hearn, he wrapped up a 52-mile bike ride by stopping by the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has undergone a controversial $14 million renovation project to paint the bottom of the pool “American flag blue.” The athlete said he noticed a section of detached liner and reached inside the water to see what the piece felt like.
“I didn’t destroy or break or peel anything,” he told the Post. “By the time I realized what was going on, I was being put in handcuffs.”

“We’ve cleaned, renovated, and beautified over 45 Monuments and Memorials, 28 Statues, and 22 Fountains in Washington,D.C.,” the president wrote on Friday, June 19. “Things are really looking good in our Nation’s Capital, and add to that the fact that when I became president, Crime was rampant, and now, Washington, D.C., is one of the Safest Cities anywhere in the United States.”

He went on, “However, we’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool, which sits between The Washington Monument and The Lincoln Memorial. Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.”
The New York Times reported on Friday that the pool seemed to be rejecting elements of its renovation, with excessive peeling, “chunks of coating” and sections of “American flag blue” visible to visitors amid an ongoing algae problem.

Star Trek is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Part of why that is so impressive is that this franchise has managed to maintain the same continuity for so many years. Sure, the Kelvinverse rebooted everything for a few movies, and we occasionally get glimpses of alternate universes with their own twisted history. But the main Trek timeline, from The Original Series through Starfleet Academy, has remained the same, which is an amazing creative achievement. But it also leads to something as annoying as it is inevitable: plot holes!
There are many seeming plot holes throughout the franchise. Heck, Starfleet Academy introduced more than its fair share in only one season. However, the earliest plothole goes back to William Shatner’s very first episode, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” This episode features a mock grave for James Tiberius Kirk that reads “James R. Kirk.” This weird screwup inspired decades of attempts by fans and creators to explain what happened. However, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had a simple explanation from the very beginning. That is, the godlike character who created the tombstone was still fallible, meaning that this would be an in-universe screwup rather than a production error.
A Ghoulish Plot Hole
“Where No Man Has Gone Before” was actually the second pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. It’s the episode that sold NBC on this new show, which isn’t surprising, because this is a great hour of television. Strange energy from the galactic barrier gives one of Captain Kirk’s best friends, Gary Mitchell, godlike powers. Those powers are getting stronger by the minute, so Kirk eventually has to make the difficult decision to kill his buddy in the name of keeping the entire ship (and quite possibly the entire galaxy) safe.
At one point, Mitchell uses his powers to summon a tombstone that reads “James R. Kirk.” It makes for a great threat, but there’s just one problem: the character’s name is James Tiberius Kirk. Incidentally, Gene Roddenberry seemingly knew Kirk’s middle name early on, even though it wasn’t officially revealed (outside of The Animated Series) until The Undiscovered Country. In the introduction to Star Trek: The Classic Episodes 1, Original Series writer D.C. Fontana claimed that once Roddenberry noticed the mistake, he came up with a quick and easy explanation. “Gary Mitchell had godlike powers, but at base he was human. He made a mistake.”
Powers Like A God, Mind Like A Human
Unfortunately, Roddenberry kept this plot hole explanation to himself. I say “unfortunately” because this mistake sent fans into a tizzy trying to explain the discrepancy. On top of that, various Star Trek writers tried their hands at providing explanations. One such explanation came from Michael Jan Friedman’s non-canonical My Brother’s Keeper series. In these books, when the future captain meets Gary Mitchell, he claims his middle name is “Racquetball.” Later, when Kirk steamrolls through a discussion, Mitchell says the man’s middle name should be “Rhinoceros.” Therefore, Friedman explained that the “James R. Kirk” on the tombstone is just an in-joke between former friends.
Additionally, the late, great Star Trek writer Peter David tried his hand at an explanation. In his novel Q-Squared, the events of “Where No Man Has Gone Before” take place in a parallel reality in which Kirk’s middle initial really is “R.” In this non-canonical book, we also find out that Mitchell’s powers came from briefly being possessed by Q, who had to pull himself together across all of time and space. Quick side note: while Marvel has really played out the concept of multiverses, Q-Squared is an amazing novel, and every Trek fan should read it at least once.
These writers did their best to explain where “James R. Kirk” came from. On top of this, fans have constantly debated this issue, all trying to one-up each other in coming up with a suitable explanation for this plothole. As it turns out, though, none of this debating and speculating was necessary because Gene Roddenberry had the perfect explanation ready. Namely, that having the power of a god isn’t the same as having the unlimited knowledge of a god. It’s short, it’s simple, and it’s effective. Most of all, it does what Star Trek has always done best: keep the sci-fi storytelling centered around humanity.

Less than one year after Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Holly Ramsay married Olympian Adam Peaty, the newlyweds are preparing to welcome their first baby together.

“Last year, I had kind of given up on finding a girl I wanted to be with,” Olson, 28, wrote via Instagram on Thursday, June 18. “I remember thinking to myself that if I’m gonna date someone I want them to have the same morals I have and to have a kind soul. To like me for me and not for what I post on social media. To love their family and enjoy spending time with them. To not take life so seriously and not care what other people think.”
According to Olson, “somehow” he found all of that — “and more” — in Sajak, 31.
“I’ve never met someone I thought I could spend every day with until I met her, and a major reason why is because we can be our true selves around each other,” he gushed on Thursday. “If you think you haven’t found The One yet and that it’s ‘too late,’ trust me it’s not.”

Olson and Maggie, the daughter of Wheel of Fortune icon Pat Sajak, revealed in April that they were dating.
“I’m a very weird person, I’m a very out there person.
