The Wait for Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot Officially Has an End Date
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to reach the end of its Multiverse Saga, and Marvel Studios is already beginning to reveal what comes next. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will bring together heroes from across the MCU and beyond, but the franchise’s future is quickly starting to belong to a new generation of characters. The X-Men are finally going to be a major part of it. Marvel has been surprisingly patient about getting its own X-Men movie into theaters. Disney completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, giving Marvel Studios access to the mutants after nearly two decades of X-Men movies produced outside the MCU. Since then, the franchise has introduced mutants like Ms. Marvel and Namor, brought Kelsey Grammer‘s Beast into The Marvels, and revisited Fox’s mutant universe through Deadpool & Wolverine.
The actual reboot has started moving much faster recently. Jake Schreier is set to direct, and Marvel has already assembled a cast that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, with several new additions being announced at D23. With its team finally taking shape, there was only one particularly big piece of the puzzle still missing.
‘X-Men’ Will Arrive Just Months After ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’
Marvel Studios announced during its D23 presentation that X-Men will arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028. That date puts the X-Men in an especially interesting position on Marvel Studios’ upcoming calendar. Avengers: Secret Wars is currently scheduled for December 17, 2027, meaning X-Men will arrive less than five months after the Multiverse Saga reaches its conclusion. Whatever happens in Secret Wars, audiences won’t have to wait long to see what Marvel’s mutant era looks like on the other side. It also makes the new X-Men one of the clearest pieces of Marvel’s post-Secret Wars future. The MCU has spent years teasing mutantkind without committing to its own version of the team, while legacy X-Men characters have continued to appear throughout the Multiverse Saga. Schreier’s movie will finally have the opportunity to establish an X-Men built specifically for the MCU and begin a new chapter for characters who have been waiting years to take center stage.
With Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue, and Emma Frost already cast, Marvel has assembled a substantial first roster. Adam Driver‘s Mister Sinister also gives that team its first confirmed threat, although story details surrounding the movie remain under wraps. X-Men will arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.
