These 8 Classic ’90s Cartoons Are Ready for a Reboot in 2026

Published

on

Everyone claims to want new, original series and movies, but when looking at the numbers, the most popular series are sequels, remakes, or reboots. This proves that the demand for millennial and Gen Z nostalgia is at an all-time high in 2026, with fan-favorites such as X-Men: The Animated Series and Ren and Stimpy getting modern reboots. Like it or not, reboots and remakes are extremely popular and here to stay.

That being said, there are a slew of ’90s cartoons that deserve a second life, which is why this list will highlight eight cartoons that should get rebooted in 2026. Based on popularity, nostalgia, potential, unresolved story points, modern appreciation, and overall quality, these cartoons were some of the best of their time, and fans would appreciate a modern interpretation of them.

‘Rugrats’ (1991–2003)

The ’90s were a treasure trove of incredible cartoons, being a golden age of the medium, with one of the most popular series being Rugrats. This show views the world from the baby’s point of view, where everything is bigger, more mysterious, and full of adventure. It follows a group of kids, some of whom are cousins and friends, enjoying their time together.

Rugrats is arguably the most popular cartoon on this list, but that doesn’t mean it is the most deserving. Many fans felt content with the ending and number of episodes, meaning there doesn’t need to be a reboot. However, a Rugrats reboot would perform well and be in high demand by fans wishing to relive one of the best cartoons from their childhood. Technically, there was a modern reboot, but it didn’t have the same feeling, and a return to form would redeem that failure.

‘ReBoot’ (1994–2001)

Some of the greatest cartoons in history are Canadian, such as Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy, and ReBoot, the latter of which deserves a modern adaptation. Set inside the mainframe of a computer, the show follows Bob (Michael Benyaer), Enzo (Paul Dobson), and Dot (Kathleen Barr) as they fight against unwanted and evil viruses known as Megabyte and Hexadecimal.

ReBoot is one of the greatest Canadian cartoons of all time and was one of the first fully CGI shows, breaking new ground and influencing the medium. ReBoot: The Guardian Code was a letdown, but it reminded fans that they are itching to dive back into the Mainframe, meaning a new remake should happen. With technical advancements in CGI, a new high-stakes series would be awesome, and it would be funny if ReBoot got a reboot.

‘Superman: The Animated Series’ (1996–2000)

Superhero cartoons are some of the greatest in the medium, and DC in particular is known for its standout series, such as Batman: The Animated Series. However, another classic in the DCAU is Superman: The Animated Series, which follows Clark Kent (Tim Daly) and his adventures as the Man of Steel, facing off against dangerous villains including Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown).

My Adventures with Superman is an incredible Superman animated series, but with the new DCU starting, a revival of Superman: The Animated Series following David Correnswet‘s Superman would be absolutely brilliant. The movies are great, but more content following characters like Superman and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) in an animated universe would create one of the best animated superhero TV shows. This wouldn’t exactly be a reboot, but rather taking its formula, style, and storytelling, and making something new out of it.

‘Dexter’s Laboratory’ (1996–2003)

Other than Rugrats, the next most popular entry featured on this list is probably Dexter’s Laboratory, a true classic of the ’90s that everyone would love to see again. The titular protagonist is a scheming child genius who likes to conduct experiments hidden from his parents. However, they often fail because of the undermining efforts of his rival or his sister, who unknowingly foils his plans.

Dexter’s Laboratory is one of the greatest cartoons of all time, meaning some don’t believe it needs a remake that would potentially ruin it. However, other fans would disagree, saying it deserves a reboot because it is so good. There is hesitation from the creator, Genndy Tartakovsky, especially since the voice actor passed away, but perhaps a legacy sequel would allow for a workaround while being modern, relevant, nostalgic, unique, and enjoyable. It likely will never happen, but fans can still hope that one of the best cartoons will get a revival.

‘Freakazoid!’ (1995–1997)

Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of all time, with prestigious movies such as Saving Private Ryan. However, he also tried his hand at animation and delivered an instant ’90s classic in Freakazoid!. The titular teenage superhero fights crime in Washington, D.C., using his powers to defend the city from enemies in bizarre fashion.

Freakazoid! is known for its satirical humor, bizarre style, and over-the-top style, something that fans nowadays would greatly appreciate. This cartoon was ahead of its time, pioneering internet humor with its quirky style and meta-commentary on pop-culture. A modern reboot that satirizes the current landscape with superhero nonsense, especially with the genre’s popularity, would be perfect. A Freakazoid! reboot would be instantly relevant and has tons of potential to be better than the original. This cartoon is distinctly ’90s, and a modern touch would go a long way to renewing interest in this peculiar cartoon.

‘Gargoyles’ (1994–1997)

Batman: The Animated Series dominated the ’90s with its groundbreaking story, being an influential cartoon that defined the decade. Everyone tried to replicate its success, including Disney, which produced Gargoyles in retaliation. Originally protecting the world, a curse was cast on the Gargoyles, trapping them in stone for hundreds of years, but after that wait, the curse is undone, and now they roam New York City, adjusting to modern times.

Gargoyles tried to be the next Batman, but it became something entirely different in the meantime, establishing itself as a cult classic that was fresh, dark, and complex. Disney announced a live-action reboot of the cartoon, but fans would appreciate a reboot of the cartoon much more. Gargoyles ended too soon, leaving unfinished business for the story and fans who desperately want to return to the dark storytelling that hooked an entire generation of viewers in the ’90s. The story and complexity was ahead of its time and highlighted dark and philosophical narratives that fans would love to experience again in 2026.

7

‘The Pirates of Dark Water’ (1991–1993)

Most of the cartoons on this list are from the mid-1990s, but that doesn’t mean the early ’90s were barren of shows, with one of the best being The Pirates of Dark Water. With his father, the king, dying, the prince sets off on a nautical adventure to find the thirteen treasures which are rumored to be able to save his father. He and his crew travel the seas on a perilous quest, often facing evil forces who want the treasures for nefarious reasons.

The Pirates of Dark Water is one of the more forgotten series nowadays, which is exactly why a remake would reinvigorate interest and revive this classic cartoon. Despite that, it is one of the most requested reboots of all time since it was cancelled after 21 episodes, leaving the prince five treasures short of his goal. The Pirates of Dark Water never concluded, which is why a modern reboot could bring back this prestigious cartoon with layered storytelling and high-fantasy stakes. The Pirates of Dark Water is the most deserving cartoon of a reboot on this list, as fans have been waiting decades to see the conclusion of their favorite show.

‘Recess’ (1997–2001)

Recess is one of the most quintessential ’90s cartoons, capturing the decade perfectly, making it a common rewatch for fans wanting to experience the good times and nostalgia from the ’90s again. It follows the troublemaking antics of a group of friends in fourth grade as they go about their daily lives. During recess, there is a whole society with government, rules, and laws, creating a dynamic world that the kids live in.

As one of the most definitive ’90s cartoons, it is also one of the most nostalgic, meaning fans would love to dive back into this world. School life has changed dramatically, and a reboot could either follow the same group of kids in a later grade during the 2000s or a new group of students in elementary during the 2020s. The evolution of playground politics would be fascinating to investigate. There is modern potential as well as nostalgic interest in a Recess reboot, making it a ’90s cartoon that needs a modern revival. The ’90s was a golden age of cartoons, and shows like Recess reflected that, so the least fans can get in return is a 2026 reboot of some of these classic cartoons.

But that wasn’t all. Nique decided to film a “What’s In My Bag” video for TikTok. In her comment section, however, users were ready to share a few questions and comments.

“And you deadass wrong,” one viewer commented before Nique replied with curiosity.

Social Media Reacts To Nique’s Response To An Internet User Accusing Her Of Being With Her “Home Girl’s Man”

Social media users were apparently taken aback by Nique’s reply to the comment about being with her “home girl’s man.” Reactions to her response were shared in TSR Teens’ comment section.

Instagram user @lajayymonroe wrote, Idc what yall say forget hes her ex friend bd. This is a married man smh 🤦🏽‍♀️ this is not okay. It don’t matter why they’re together, they shouldn’t be.”

While Instagram user @armani.babe9 added, Now Nique, nothing can validate this behavior chileee. I can’t wait for messy Monday”

Nique Shares Post About Being The “Villain” After Clip From NBA YoungBoy’s Passenger Seat

But that wasn’t the only comment Nique shared on Thursday. Additionally, she took to Threads and Instagram to share a carousel of flicks from the private jet. Amid one of the photos was a text post that read, “If they paint you as a villain. POSE.” Furthermore, another text post in the carousel read, “Sometimes people do stuff to try to hurt you and end up blessing you…”

For those unfamiliar, Nique’s name became entangled with NBA YoungBoy’s in November 2025 when YoungBoy dropped his ‘Zero IQ Freestyle.’ Users appeared to believe that his lyric, “I f***** on her, Jania was mad, but over nothin’, that h* was trash,” was about Nique. Additionally, Yaya Mayweather appeared to confirm the speculation. However, YoungBoy ultimately shut down the rumor.

At the time, however, Jania Meshell appeared to insinuate that she had a friend who was kicking her while she was down. Then, fast-forward to this morning: Nique showed that she was right by YoungBoy’s side, in his passenger seat.

At this time, the nature of Nique and NBA YoungBoy’s relationship remains unclear. Meanwhile, Jania Meshell has made it clear that she and NBA YoungBoy are nothing more than co-parents. This, while NBA YoungBoy has reportedly covered up his tattoo of her name.

Amanda Seyfried is opening up about one of the more unexpected behind-the-scenes details from her recent film, and it’s definitely turning heads. During a recent radio appearance, the Oscar-nominated actress shared that she wore a prosthetic body piece while filming “The Testament of Ann Lee,” explaining that the historical drama required an unusually raw and vulnerable level of realism. Her candid comments offered fans a glimpse into just how far Amanda Seyfried was willing to go to fully commit to the role.

While appearing on “The Scott Mills Breakfast Show,” Seyfried explained that the nature of the film called for scenes that pushed her comfort zone. “This movie … needed to be graphic,” she said, describing how the production approached authenticity. The actress, who portrays real-life Shakers founder Ann Lee, added that although audiences might assume she was completely exposed during filming, that wasn’t actually the case.

Seyfried also revealed she was pregnant during filming, which added another layer to the experience. “I was pregnant and naked, but I wasn’t naked at all. And at the end of the movie, I’m standing in front of a burning building with just a merkin,” she recalled. Despite the vulnerability of the moment, the “Mamma Mia!” star said the scene left her feeling empowered rather than uncomfortable, explaining that she “felt so free” while wearing only the artificial hair covering during the dramatic sequence.

Toward the end of the interview, Seyfried clarified the surprising detail that has since gone viral. “You cannot see my butthole in [the scene], but I swear there is a prosthetic butthole there,” she stressed.

When host Scott Mills questioned why the production would include it if it wasn’t visible, Seyfried explained it was simply a precaution. However, Seyfried emphasized that artistic growth comes from fear. “I need to sink my teeth into something that is really scary because I know I can do it, and I know I’ll be better for it,” she said, and her performance clearly resonated with audiences. The film reportedly received a 15-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2025, and Seyfried later earned both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for the role.

While awaiting the 2026 Academy Awards, she reflected on the idea of winning, telling The New Yorker, “I’ve gotten this far. … Would [an Oscar] be great? Of course it would, for every reason. But it isn’t necessary.”

Outside of the historical drama, Seyfried is also generating buzz for her recent thriller “The Housemaid,” where she stars opposite Sydney Sweeney. Based on the bestselling novel, the film follows Sweeney’s character Millie, a newly hired live-in maid who discovers that her wealthy employers, played by Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, are far from perfect.

The actresses revealed they formed a close bond while filming. “We related over people experiences,” Seyfried said, who explained she came to “care about” her 28-year-old co-star during production. “It’s easy to support you. I also probably give way too much unsolicited advice, ‘This is what I would do,’ ” she added.

The Forgotten Buffy Episode That Inspired The Best Superhero Show Ever Made

The Forgotten Buffy Episode That Inspired The Best Superhero Show Ever Made

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a show that very nearly got an animated spinoff. Sadly, that show never saw the light of day, and this cartoon project remains deader than the Master. However, that didn’t keep this seminal urban fantasy show from inspiring one of the greatest animated series in television history!

You see, one of Buffy’s biggest fans was Bruce Timm, who kickstarted the DC Animated Universe with Batman: The Animated Series. He went on to produce other beloved DCAU shows, including Justice League Unlimited. In a bit of geeky synchronicity, the JLU episode “This Little Piggy” was inspired by the Season 2 Buffy episode “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.”

Ratty, The Vampire Slayer

The Buffy episode in question has its characters gearing up for Valentine’s Day, and Xander gets his heart broken when a peer-pressured Cordelia breaks up with him. He then forces local witch Amy to cast a love spell on his ex, but it ends up backfiring, and everyone but Cordelia falls in love with the young man. Eventually, the spell is reversed, and Xander gets back together with Cordelia, but along the way, a jealous Amy transforms Buffy into a rat.

What does this rat transformation have to do with Justice League Unlimited? That show’s producer (animation legend Bruce Timm) was a big fan of Buffy, and he thought that “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” would feature a different ending. Specifically, he thought that Buffy would have to use her Slayer skills to fight off a cat (she does approach the kitty and unexpectedly scares him off) while she was still transformed into a rat!

Wonder Woman Or Wonder Bacon?

Obviously, that didn’t happen, but Timm still thought it was a cool concept. So cool, in fact, that he wrote something similar into his own show. In the Justice League Unlimited episode “This Little Piggy,” Circe transforms Wonder Woman into a pig, leaving Batman with the unenviable task of figuring out how to restore his kindasorta goddess girlfriend (it’s complicated) back to her divine self.

In the audio commentary for “This Little Piggy,” Bruce Tim revealed that this Wonder Woman plot point was based on how he thought the ratty Slayer would have to fight the cat. In the Justice League Unlimited episode, Wonder Woman is a bit like Buffy: she is transformed into an animal but otherwise retains her human intelligence. Unlike Buffy, though, Wonder Woman has to fight against humans who aren’t afraid to take her to the slaughterhouse.

Slay, Queens!

This is evident when one of the humans tries to kill her with a gun; when he fires what would have otherwise been a fatal blast, Wonder Woman deflects the shot with her bracers. It’s a crowd-pleasing moment, one that shows that the Amazon’s warrior spirit is more than skin deep. The scene also helps to illustrate what Timm was hoping to see in “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered:” a transformed hero taking on foes who are way above her weight class.

As a very different kind of cartoon pig might say, th-th-th-that’s all, folks! A forgotten episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended up inspiring one of the craziest episodes of Justice League Unlimited, transforming Wonder Woman into a pig just as Buffy was transformed into a rat. It’s a fun bit of franchise crossover that reminds us of a very important point: no matter what form they take, these two women know how to slay!

Netflix Adding A Fantastic Alternate Reality Series Where Germany Won World War 2

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

It will always be a little strange to see a high-profile original series move from one streaming service to another, but as more and more discover the real money is in licensing out their productions versus streaming them themselves, it’s going to become more common. Amazon’s deal with Netflix involving the MGM catalog includes not only all of the James Bond films, but also 2015’s The Man in the High Castle, an alternate-history take on the world in which the Allies lost World War 2. The four seasons series is coming to Netflix on March 11 where again, the Netflix effect is going to turn the decade old show into another hit.

An Alternate World Where The Allies Lost World War 2

The Man in the High Castle might be worth the effort. The series loosely adapts the book by Philip K. Dick, very loosely, the two take place in the same world but the book goes further into mysticism, philosophy, and presents a far scarier world where the Nazi control of half the world has been completely normalized. By contrast, the television adaptation has a significantly larger cast with more of a focus on individualism, depicting a far more divided world, and it includes a guy by the name of Adolf Hitler.

The less you know about The Man in the High Castle when you go into it, the more you’ll be able to appreciate the wild twists and turns that the dystopian story takes in a world where no one is safe. It starts off with Joe Blake (Luke Kleintank) in New York, offering to drive a truck into the Neutral Zone (the Rockies) for the Resistance, while on the opposite coast, under rule of the Japanese, Juliana Crane (Alexa Davalos) is escorting a box of film to the Neutral Zone for the Resistance. Those films show a different world, one where the Allies won World War 2. Our world.

A Decade Later Man In The High Castle Is Going To Be A Hit

As far as hooks go, it’s a pretty good one. Fans and critics agreed that the first season was, at the time, a high point for an original streaming series weith a 95 percent fresh rating. The Man in the High Castle wobbles a bit under the weight of the story, and its cast of dozens of characters (including Rufus Sewell as an American officer who accepted the Third Reich’s offer to join them) to keep track of, but it levels out towards the end and finishes strong. Don’t worry, there’s no sudden cancelation cliffhanger here.

It will be interesting to see the response to The Man in the High Castle a few months after Peacemaker Season 2 tackled a similar plot. What if the Nazis won World War 2 is one of the most common thought experiments in the world of alternate history, but it’s never been done on the same scale and production budget as it was in the Amazon original series. On March 11, thanks to the power of Netflix, it will feel like the show, over a decade old at this point, is being discovered for the first time. Stay away from social media to avoid the spoilers, but more importantly, the inevitable “hot takes” that will do nothing but raise your blood pressure.

Overlooked, Unrated Thriller Bends Time And Laughs At Fate

Overlooked, Unrated Thriller Bends Time And Laughs At Fate

By Robert Scucci

The concept of free will is a fickle one if you can see your own future and realize that no matter what choice you make in the present, you’ll wind up at the same outcome. 2019’s Volition toys with this deterministic notion when its hero can’t escape his fate no matter how many times he tries to course correct. He’s not living in a choose your own adventure timeline, but in an adventure with a grisly end that always seems to choose him.

Through this framework, Volition succeeds as a time traveling sci-fi thriller where free will and determinism are locked in constant opposition, with no clear way to break the cycle of betrayal, deception, and violence that traps our protagonist Jimmy (Adrian Glyn McMorran). As more variables enter the equation, Jimmy tries to make sense of his surroundings and correct the predetermined path he’s convinced he has to follow, hoping to reach a conclusion he can actually live with.

Clairvoyance, Diamonds, New Relationships, And Death

Volition 2019

When we’re first introduced to Jimmy in Volition, we already know he’s blessed or cursed with clairvoyance. He uses his inexplicable ability for sports betting, while also experiencing fleeting flashes of deja vu that hit without warning. Having lived this way without too many complications, Jimmy’s life takes a turn when a woman named Angela (Magda Apanowicz) is mugged by a group of low level criminals. After catching a flash of a future moment suggesting they become friends, or maybe more than friends, he decides to pursue her.

Around the same time, Jimmy’s old friend Sal (Frank Cassini) introduces him to Ray (John Cassini), who offers him the chance to fence a bag of diamonds worth millions. Jimmy only accepts because his visions imply that this is how events are supposed to unfold. In his mind, the future isn’t something to avoid, it’s something he has to fulfill. Up until this point, he’s believed he has no real influence over the outcomes of his visions, so he might as well go with the flow.

Volition 2019

As expected, Jimmy and Angela grow closer while Sal and his accomplice Terry (Aleks Paunovic) plan to betray Ray by stealing the diamonds from Jimmy and keeping the profits for themselves. The double cross sets off a chain reaction that forces Jimmy and Angela to flee to Jimmy’s estranged foster dad, Elliot (Bill Marchant), who happens to be a quantum physicist. As fate would suggest, at least in Jimmy’s mind, these events build toward what was always destined to happen. There will be a scuffle at Elliot’s house, and Angela will be shot dead.

Refusing to accept that this is how the scenario must play out, Jimmy consults Elliot, who reveals he created a time travel serum administered intravenously, and that Jimmy’s clairvoyance isn’t mystical at all. It’s the result of being subjected to the serum during childhood. Jimmy is understandably furious that his foster dad used him as a lab rat, but he’s relieved to learn that his visions are actually memories from previous time hops. If that’s the case, he may be able to change the future if he can map it out correctly.

A Time Loop Worth Getting Lost In

Volition becomes especially enthralling once it leans fully into Jimmy’s time loop, which fragments at increasingly absurd levels as he tries to save Angela from the encounter that claims her life. He experiences memories, past, future, and present in rapid bursts, making split second decisions based on limited information. He uses the wall of his apartment as a reference point to track overlapping timelines, watching himself from afar and interfering when necessary, yet still failing to crack the code.

No matter what he does, Angela dies, and he refuses to accept that outcome. If saving her life while sacrificing his own is his purpose, so be it. Having never cared about anyone as deeply as he cares about her convinces him that the ultimate tradeoff might be the only way to find peace.

Volition 2019

There aren’t any flashy special effects in Volition outside of Jimmy’s visions, which is exactly what I appreciate in a time travel story. The film benefits from that restraint because the experience isn’t driven by laser beams or futuristic gadgetry. Everything unfolds inside Jimmy’s fractured perception as he buries himself deeper in similar yet slightly different timelines that all appear to lead to the same destination.

To experience the deja vu, the confusion, and one man laughing in the face of fate because he refuses to let a deterministic timeline call the shots, you can stream Volition for free on Tubi as of this writing.
