Timothée Chalamet’s Steamy Neo-Noir Flick Is Heading to a New Streamer
After just missing out on a Golden Statue last year with his starring turn in James Mangold‘s Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet is back on the Oscars hunt this year and is currently the clear frontrunner. In the sports drama Marty Supreme, Chalamet’s unpredictable balance between misunderstood and reprehensible is gripping, so much so that the film has now become the highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office in A24‘s history, led by a strange, headline-grabbing marketing tour by its star.
As the journey to potential Oscars glory for Chalamet continues, one of his more underdiscussed efforts is heading to a new streamer. As of February 1, you’ll be able to watch the neo-noir thriller Hot Summer Nights, also an A24 project, on Plex. Starring Chalamet as an isolated, confidence-lacking teenager, the film pairs him with Maika Monroe as the free-spirited McKayla, under the guiding eye of director Elijah Bynum.
Sadly, the film failed to make a meaningful positive impression with either audiences or critics, earning just 59% from the former and 46% from the latter on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus on the site reads, “Hot Summer Nights is easy on the eyes and clearly indebted to some great films, but its strengths — including a charismatic young cast — are often outweighed by its uninspired story.” A logline for Hot Summer Nights reads:
“An awkward teenager gets in over his head dealing drugs while falling for his business partner’s enigmatic sister during one scorching summer in Cape Cod, Mass.”
Who Is Chalamet’s Competition in the Best Actor Race?
Although he is the current frontrunner heading into the Oscars, this is never a guarantee of glory at the Academy Awards. So, who poses the biggest threat to Chalamet’s perhaps overdue win? The five nominees include Leonardo DiCaprio for his starring turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, Michael B. Jordan for his literally two-faced performance in Ryan Coogler’s vampire flick, Sinners, Ethan Hawke for his leading role in Richard Linklater‘s Blue Moon, and Wagner Moura for his starring performance in The Secret Agent, for which he has already won a Golden Globe.
Hot Summer Nights is streaming on Plex this February. Stay tuned to Collider for the latest streaming stories.
