What To Remember Before Netflix’s Fantasy Adventure Series Returns

Published

One-Piece

Almost 30 years since Eiichiro Oda introduced One Piece to the world, the franchise has become one of the most popular ongoing manga and anime stories of all time, spanning over 100 volumes and 1,100 episodes to date. So it’s no surprise that a big company like Netflix would release a live-action One Piece. Unlike Netflix’s previous live-action anime adaptations like Cowboy Bebop that failed to capture the essence of the source material, One Piece was considered a hit amongst fans of the manga/anime, and also drew in new audiences. Thanks to its relatable characters, action-packed sequences, and heartwarming stories, One Piece became one of the highest-viewed Netflix shows in the second half of 2023.

Although One Piece Season 1 has only eight episodes, show developers Matt Owens and Steven Maeda managed to adapt most of the East Blue Saga, which covered almost 100 manga chapters and 61 anime episodes. Before the Straw Hats set sail for the Grand Line in Season 2, let’s recap everything you need to know from One Piece Season 1.

Monkey D. Luffy Assembles the Straw Hat Pirates To Find the One Piece

One Piece opens with the legendary Pirate King Gol D. Roger (Michael Dorman) about to be executed for his crimes of piracy. Before his death, he reveals that he hid his treasure, known as the One Piece, and whoever finds it will get wealth, fame, and power. This led to the Great Pirate Era, as everyone went off in search of this treasure. 22 years later, no one has found it, but our hero, Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), is up for the challenge. Since he was a child, he’s always dreamed of being King of the Pirates after befriending Red-Haired Shanks (Peter Gadiot) and wanting to join their crew. As he digs through their treasure, Luffy finds and eats a Gum-Gum Fruit, one of the Devil Fruits, that changes his body to have rubber-like properties. Although Luffy never ends up joining Shanks’ crew, Shanks entrusts his straw hat to the boy and tells him to return it once he’s become a great pirate.

Flash forward to the present day, Luffy is still on the path to fulfilling his ultimate dream, but he needs a boat, crew, and a map to the Grand Line, where Luffy believes the One Piece is. He meets Koby (Morgan Davies), a cabin boy for the cruel pirate Alvida (Ilia Isorelýs Paulino). After freeing Koby, the two travel to a Marine base, which is rumored to have a map to the Grand Line. Luffy allies with a thief and navigator named Nami (Emily Rudd), who is also trying to steal the map. They free Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), a skilled swordsman and pirate hunter, to help defeat the Marines during their escape. Although they’re a trio that shouldn’t get along on paper, they work well together when needed. Koby decides to stay behind and fulfill his dream of becoming a Marine. Knowing they’ll be on opposite sides of the law, Luffy and Koby share a heartfelt farewell.

After defeating Buggy the Clown (Jeff Ward) and his pirate circus crew, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami meet Usopp (Jacob Romero), a dockworker, as well as Usopp’s friend and shipyard owner, Kaya (Celeste Loots), who they save from certain death at the hands of the disguised pirate captain Kuro (Alexander Maniatis). Kaya repays the Straw Hats with a ship that Luffy dubs the Going Merry, and Usopp also accepts Luffy’s invitation to join the crew. When the group stops at Baratie, a floating restaurant, Luffy pays his compliments to one of the chefs, Sanji (Taz Skylar), for the delicious food. However, a skilled pirate swordsman, Dracule Mihawk (Steven John Ward), shows up to take Luffy in. Zoro steps up to challenge Mihawk, but ends up badly wounded and inches from death. Mihawk leaves Zoro alive out of respect and hopes they get to have a rematch once Zoro is stronger, while Sanji has his boss and guardian, Zeff (Craig Fairbrass), tend to Zoro’s wounds. Once Zoro is healed, Luffy vows to help Sanji for his kindness and asks him to join the crew.

Just when it seemed like everything is going as well as could be, Arlong (McKinley Belcher III), the most dangerous pirate in all the East Blue, shows up and defeats Luffy while looking for the Grand Line map. In a shocking twist, it’s revealed that Nami has been secretly working for Arlong, but there’s a heartbreaking explanation behind it. The Straw Hats learn from Nami’s adopted sister, Nojiko (Chioma Umeala), that Arlong and his crew invaded their village and killed their mother, Belle-Mere (Genna Galloway), when they were kids. To protect Nojiko and the rest of Coco Village, Nami made a deal with Arlong to buy back her village’s freedom for 100 million berries. Until she pays off her debt, she’s forced to work for him.

Nami ultimately tries to pay her debt to Arlong, but he goes back on their deal after making another agreement with Marine Nezumi (Rory Acton-Burnell) to let him off the hook for his crimes in exchange for Nami’s money. Nami is left devastated that her betrayal was all for nothing, and attempts to carve out the tattoo on her arm that identifies her as a member of Arlong’s crew, but Luffy finds her and agrees to help her defeat Arlong. The One Piece Season 1 finale is an epic battle between the Straw Hats and the Arlong Pirates, where each of our heroes shows off their unique skills and newfound teamwork. Luffy manages to defeat Arlong, finally freeing Nami and Coco Village from his rule.

Their celebration is cut short when Nezumi calls in Marine Vice Admiral Garp (Vincent Regan) to take Luffy in. Garp played a part in Gol D. Roger’s execution and has sworn to put an end to piracy across the world. Since breaking into the Marine base and stealing the Grand Line map, Garp has been after Luffy. It’s also revealed that Garp is Luffy’s grandfather and that he’s been trying to make Luffy a Marine so that his grandson avoids the same fate as Gol D. Roger, despite Luffy’s professed desire to become King of the Pirates.

More Dangerous Foes Are After the Straw Hats in ‘One Piece’ Season 2

With little time to recover after defeating Arlong, Luffy is no match for Garp. Despite trying to forcefully stop Luffy from being a pirate, Luffy’s determination is strong. As a sign of respect, Garp lets Luffy and the Straw Hats go. Before heading off, Koby reveals that Garp has ordered a bounty for Luffy’s arrest at 30 million berries — the highest in all the East Blue. This garners attention from previous villains like Alvida and Buggy while also teasing a mysterious new villain for Season 2 in Smoker (Callum Kerr). The news also reaches Shanks and his crew, who are more than happy to see Luffy achieve his dream of being a famous pirate.

As the Straw Hats make their way to the dangerous current known as the Grand Line, they realize that the bounty on Luffy’s head will only draw more unwanted attention their way. While they were victorious against the toughest pirate in all the East Blue, they’re not aware of the dangers ahead of them in the Grand Line. As the One Piece Season 2 trailer shows, a criminal syndicate, Baroque Works, will come to collect, and it won’t be an easy fight for our beloved Straw Hats.

One Piece Season 2 premieres March 10 on Netflix.

Guillermo del Toro Teases His Return to TV’s Longest Running Live-Action Sitcom

Published

on

Sorry-Mary,-I'm-Losing-Faith-Connie-Britton

In just over one week, Guillermo del Toro will return for his sixth round at the Academy Awards as a nominee thanks to his latest monstrous feature, Frankenstein. Over the last two decades, the celebrated helmer has turned up at the yearly award show courtesy of past projects like Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Of the previous five trips, he’s walked away with an arm full of trophies three different times, with his most wins clocked by 2017’s sci-fi thriller The Shape of Water. This time around, he and the folks behind Frankenstein, which include leading stars Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, are up for a whopping nine nominations. And, with all the buzz surrounding the Netflix film, it’s more than likely that they’ll walk away with at least one award if not several more.

Whether it’s as a director, writer, producer, or creature crafter, del Toro has kept himself incredibly busy year after year, delighting audiences with every project that has his name attached. Beyond his award-season takeover with Frankenstein, del Toro is also hard at work putting together two other features. For starters, he’ll reteam with Netflix for the animated feature The Buried Giant, which serves as an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s fantasy novel of the same name. Beyond that, he has a Frankenstein reunion brewing with Isaac, with the pair pushing forward on a new thriller titled Fury. But that’s not all!

Earlier this week, the Crimson Peak helmer took to social media to tease his return to the longest-running live-action sitcom of all time. That’s right, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans — Pappy McPoyle is back! Giving his X followers a peek behind the scenes, del Toro posted a shot of himself as the incredibly disheveled character who we haven’t seen since Season 11. The image implies that we’ll be getting a McPoyle-heavy episode in the upcoming eighteenth season that will put the celebrated director back in front of the camera and throw him into the raucous madness of our favorite series.

The Raunchy 2023 Comedy So Offensive, Everyone Involved Was Targeted For Cancellation

By Jennifer Asencio
| Published

There are some critics out there who can’t seem to get over the fact that Daily Wire+ makes its own content. They have gone so out of their way to ignore the recent series The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin that there is still, as of this writing, no Rotten Tomatoes score for it from critics. It’s a fact that has been thrown in everyone’s faces to poison the well against this incredible King Arthur epic.

Ignoring all of the other content Daily Wire+ produces, including the magnificent Run Hide Fight and slow-burnWestern thriller Terror on the Prairie, any coverage of Daily Wire+ content focuses on one movie: Lady Ballers. This absurdist comedy was written and directed by Jeremy Boreing and features almost every well-known Daily Wire personality, including Matt Walsh, Brett Cooper (who also played Ganieda in The Pendragon Cycle), Ben Shapiro, Michael Knowles, and the controversial Candace Owens, who has since departed the company and is having a very public feud with both Daily Wire and Boreing. These things are enough for critics to shy away from it, especially in light of the escapades of Owens, but there’s more.

The story is about a failed basketball coach named Rob whose harsh coaching tactics are not as welcome in the era of DEI as they were when he was winning championships in 2008. Down on his luck, he finds himself working at a drag bar, where he is reunited with his former star player, Alex. He and Alex decide to train Alex for a local track and field event, but when Rob tries to register his protégé, he is told the men’s category is full. Alex, just coming off a shift at work, is still dressed in drag, causing the horrified race registrar to profusely apologize and allow Alex into the race… as a transgender woman.

Things get even more complicated when reporter Gwen Wilde enters the picture and convinces Rob and Alex to enter a women’s basketball competition as transgender athletes. Rob’s daughter, Winnie, a savvy eight-year-old who goes to public school and lives with her mother and extremely liberal stepfather, Kris, assists by explaining how gender identity works. The team does well, and the players all embrace their inner women, but their fame and stardom comes with unforeseen complications.

One of the strongest things about this movie is its script, which manages to touch every aspect of its subject matter in ways that highlight the absurdity of some of the arguments made about gender identity. This is probably why so many critics consider it “transphobic,” but what the movie really does is explore these arguments to conclusions that should be extreme but aren’t. Swimmer Reilly Gaines makes a poignant appearance as she is beaten in a race by one of the athletes, so this movie is definitely a direct statement on the inclusion of trans women in women’s sports.

What it surprisingly does not do is judge gender ideology any more harshly than it judges anything else. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Matt Walsh is surprisingly good in this movie as the hippie stepfather to Winnie, repeating every talking point with deadpan earnestness. But Rob is equally earnest in his own ridiculous ideas and equally lampooned in his aggressive attitudes about winning, his complete misunderstanding of gender theory, and his clumsy attempts to deal with his ex-wife, Dharby. In fact, Jeremy Boreing’s script even makes fun of itself more than once, calling out its own events. This is mostly a very intelligent script, even as it revels in its absurdity.

As much as the movie is about Rob and the team, the most important character is Winnie. Rob’s one redeeming quality is that he wants to be a good father to his daughter; meanwhile, she is more knowledgeable about the modern world that has left Rob behind.

Rosie Seraphine Harper will be a name to watch out for, as she portrays Winnie with such incredible comic timing, balanced with heartbreaking dramatic expression when things aren’t going well for her parents. One earnest scene in which she lists everything she thinks boys can do better than girls is deftly edited for heightened emotional impact, further spotlighting this young lady’s acting.

However, the movie does sometimes belabor its points, dragging out some of the sports action longer than it should. Some of the gags are carried a little too far, where they might have been funnier had they been cut down. The movie could have been 20 minutes shorter without hurting it or removing any of its best jokes. The only other thing that might diminish Lady Ballers is that some of the things in this movie that should be ridiculous are happening in real life, as evidenced by the montage that included Reilly Gaines.

I went into this movie thinking I was going to hate it, but there was a lot to like. The jokes land because they are genuinely funny and use the actors’ personalities. Its climax brings Rob’s ludicrous plan to its most obvious conclusion, then takes a heartwarming turn that underscores the movie’s theme. It doesn’t denigrate transgender people but makes the arguments that we’ve long been told we’re not allowed to make. It’s a human comedy that answers its questions with humor rather than derision.

Rotten Tomatoes gave this a 40% fresh rating, which was higher than I expected from the critics, but it turns out that rating is based on only five reviews. Meanwhile, an audience of 5000+ rated it 77%. It’s actually got a lot in common with Mike Judge’s cult classic Idiocracy in that it follows the silliness of its plot all the way to the end. It’s not great comedy, but it’s good comedy, and if the people it lampoons can’t take the joke, it’s simply because they don’t like the conclusions it comes to, not because there is anything wrong with the movie itself.

Audiences are reminded constantly that Daily Wire+ made Lady Ballers, and Candace Owens even used it to detract from Jeremy Boreing in her most recent rants against him. This is mainly to poison the well against the entire channel based on one movie. The trailer for Scary Movie 6 goes much further than Lady Ballers ever approaches, and it’s an entire movie. Using it as a tactic to detract from the streamer’s other content and Jeremy Boreing’s work is an underhanded attack, especially since the movie is better than it’s made out to be.

LADY BALLERS REVIEW SCORE

Lady Ballers is available on Daily Wire+ with a subscription and for rent on Amazon and Apple.

Police took a woman into custody after she fired gunshots near the Los Angeles home of Rihanna on Sunday, according to police and news reports. That woman has been identified as Ivana Lisette Ortiz. She is currently in custody as officials have set her bail at $10 million. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have yet to address the incident. Meanwhile, fans are resurfacing disturbing posts Ivana has made about the pop star.

Details About Shooting At Rihanna’s Los Angeles Home

Police received a call about shots fired near a home in the Beverly Hills area, spokesperson and Officer Charles Miller said Monday. Miller did not say who lived in the home. Multiple local news outlets reported that it belongs to Rihanna. Public records show the property in the Beverly Hills area is owned by a trust run by Evan Jehle. Jehle is a member of the advisory board for Rihanna’s Clara Lionel Foundation.

A 35-year-old woman was taken into custody “without further incident” after the shooting. Also, cops recovered a weapon, according to a statement from law enforcement. Entertainment Journalist Loren Lorosa identified the suspect as Ivana Lisette Ortiz on Monday in a tweet. Police booked Ortiz on suspicion of attempted murder. The 35-year-old, born June 2, 1990, is in jail on $10,255,000 bail. Meanwhile, the district attorney has not yet announced charges.

No one was injured in the shooting on Sunday afternoon, police said. The Associated Press reports that it was not immediately clear whether the pop star was at home when the shooting. However, TMZ cited law enforcement sources that said Rihanna was home. As for A$AP Rocky and their three kids, Riot, RZA, and Rocki, their location during the shooting is unclear. Ivana Lisette Ortiz’s Disturbing Social Media Posts Resurface

It was not known if Ivana Lisette Ortiz had any connection to Rihanna. As mentioned, fans have already dug up threatening and defaming social media posts from Ortiz against the singer.

In one post written on February 23, Ivana wrote: “@badgirlriri Are you there? Cause I was waiting for your AIDS 5-head self to say something to me directly instead of sneaking around like you talking to me where I’m not at.”

In another post from December 20, 2025, Ortiz hash tagged a demand to “send this everywhere,” adding, “THEY ARE DONE.” Ivana’s post itself called Kim Kardashian a “stupid b*tch” after claiming she “restricted” her. She added, “I’m already threw with Rihanna. Your turn hiding b*tch. Stop begging for a look.”

And that’s not all. On X (formerly Twitter), videos have surfaced of Ivana speaking of her dislike for Rihanna and her face. Additionally, she alleges the singer is harassing her, is jealous of her and that God will bless her once Rih is “gone.”

In 2018, a man was accused of breaking into a different home of Rihanna’s in the Hollywood Hills. He allegedly spent 12 hours there. The man pleaded no contest to felony counts of stalking and vandalism and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest in 2019. His sentence was probation.

Chappell Roan Goes Sheer and Backless at Paris Fashion Week

Paris Fashion Week delivered pure theatrical glamour thanks to Chappell Roan, who turned two iconic shows into her personal stage.

She made a fashion statement by going braless at the Alexander McQueen Autumn Winter 2026 show on Sunday, March 8, wearing a see-through black gown that channeled gothic elegance. The dress featured an embellished collar, sculpted mesh panels and a floor-length silhouette.

Roan finished the look with her signature flame-red curls that draped down to her bottom and striking glam with bold eyeliner and a mauve lip. The “Pink Pony Club” singer wore a dramatic bejeweled choker necklace with eye-catching drop earrings and bracelets.

She wore yet another look styled by Genesis Webb during her appearance at the Vivienne Westwood show during Paris Fashion Week on Saturday, March 7. She opted for a Victorian-era moment by donning a structured gray jacket with exaggerated shoulders, a plunging neckline and an embellished bodice. Her long skirt had a backless cutaway and showed off her lacy thong.

Roan went for an ultra-pale glam done by Andrew Dahling, who opted for a soft purple cut crease, a splash of bright pink blush and a bleached brow vibe.

The chart-topping performer has continued to push boundaries with her looks after leaving little to the imagination while hitting the red carpet at the 2026 Grammy Awards on February 1.

Roan’s custom sheer Mugler gown showed off her faux ink (plus her real tattoos) and fell from her nipple rings. Her makeup artist Sasha Glasser detailed how they pulled off the look during an interview with Allure.

“There are different ways to design tattoos for makeup and companies that make really amazing options, but because we decided on the look the night before, I had to print the designs out at Staples 30 minutes before the store closed,” Glasser revealed. “It’s basically a paper that has this shiny wax on top, so the ink sits on top, and the moment you put water on the back, the ink falls off.”

Glasser also used prosthetic supplies from a brand called Out of Kit to cover up the singer’s nipples and create fake piercings, adding, “It helps when you have good prosthetics, but it’s also a testament to our skills that we’ve worked so long on perfecting.”
