Meghan Markle’s royal wedding looked like something out of a fairytale, but according to a new book, the signs that her life inside the monarchy would unravel may have been there all along. In “Divide & Rule,” author Catherine Mayer argues Meghan’s eventual exit from royal life was not entirely shocking in hindsight, but rather the result of a deep cultural mismatch between the Duchess of Sussex and the institution she married into.
The former “Suits” actress entered the Royal Family in 2018 alongside Prince Harry, with many hoping the marriage would modernize the monarchy. As the family’s first biracial member and an outspoken feminist, Meghan appeared to symbolize change.
But Mayer suggests the very traits that initially made Meghan seem like a breath of fresh air may have also made royal life impossible to sustain. “How did the dream crumble?” Mayer asks, arguing that Meghan’s differences ultimately “would count against her.”
Markle Was ‘Too Different’ For Palace Life, Author Suggests
According to Mayer, one of the biggest signs Meghan may have struggled as a royal was simply who she already was before she met Harry. Unlike other women who married into the monarchy, Meghan had spent years building her own career, public image, and platform.
Long before becoming the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan openly shared opinions on lifestyle, fashion, politics, and activism through her now-defunct blog, The Tig. Mayer argues that Meghan’s personality, ambitious, independent, and outspoken, never naturally aligned with the traditional expectations placed on senior royals. The author even points to Meghan’s admiration for “She-Ra, Princess of Power” as an early sign she valued independence and agency.
Before meeting Harry, Meghan once identified with the fictional heroine because she represented strength and self-determination, qualities Mayer suggests were difficult to reconcile with palace expectations. Even after announcing her engagement, Meghan made clear she did not view joining the monarchy as giving up who she was.
“I don’t see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change. It’s a new chapter, right?” Meghan said during her engagement interview. At the time, the comments sounded hopeful. In hindsight, Mayer suggests they may have foreshadowed the friction to come.
California Culture And Palace Life Were Never A Natural Match
Mayer also argues Meghan’s California upbringing may have made palace culture especially difficult to navigate. The book describes California as a place where emotional openness, ambition, self-expression, and even public vulnerability are embraced, a sharp contrast to the famously reserved traditions of the British monarchy.
That disconnect reportedly surfaced in subtle but revealing moments. Meghan previously recalled feeling surprised by Prince William and Princess Kate’s reaction to her casual nature. “They came over for dinner, I remember I was in ripped jeans, and I was barefoot,” Meghan once shared. “I was a hugger. I’ve always been a hugger. I didn’t realize that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.”
According to Mayer, interactions like these underscored Meghan’s difficulty adapting to what the author describes as “Planet Windsor,” the rigid, highly structured world of royal protocol.
Prince Harry Compared Royal Life To ‘An Unending Truman Show’
Complicating matters further, even Harry has acknowledged how difficult royal life can be for outsiders to understand. In the Sussexes’ Netflix series, the Duke of Sussex described royal life as “this surreal state, this unending Truman Show.”
Harry also highlighted just how unusual palace customs can feel to someone entering the family from the outside. “How do you explain that you bow to your grandmother?” he previously mused.
According to Mayer, no amount of Googling or preparation could have fully prepared Meghan for the reality of royal life, one involving relentless scrutiny, limited privacy, palace aides, and strict traditions.
Why Meghan Markle Could Never Be The ‘Perfect Royal’
The book ultimately argues that Meghan was never likely to succeed by following the same path as Princess Kate. While Catherine, Princess of Wales, is described as someone who perfected the traditional royal role, Mayer suggests Meghan never could have comfortably embraced the same level of restraint, even if she wanted to.
Instead, Meghan continued to value emotional openness and authenticity, something that became increasingly clear during a 2019 royal tour of South Africa. When asked how she was coping, Meghan candidly admitted the experience had taken a toll. “Thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m OK,” she said at the time. “It’s not enough to just survive something, right? Like, that’s not the point of life. You’ve got to thrive, you’ve got to feel happy.”
For Mayer, moments like those revealed the deeper divide at the center of Meghan’s royal story, a California-born public figure trying to navigate an institution built on tradition, restraint, and silence.

New documentary footage featuring Sen. Lindsey Graham is revealing what the late politician considered to be his greatest accomplishment before his shocking death at age 71.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. He loves blowing stuff up,” Graham said of the ongoing war in Iran and President Donald Trump’s apparent affection for war while speaking to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in never-before-seen footage from documentary filmmaker Alex Holder’s ongoing project, Lindsey’s Game.
“He hasn’t tweeted much at all,” Graham added in the footage of Trump, 80, who is known to spend much of his time on his social media platform, Truth Social. “No drama. He’s been a great wartime president. I said last night that Trump and Bibi are like Roosevelt and Churchill.”
Holder spent four years embedded with the former senator for the project, which began filming in late 2021 and is currently in post-production. No release date or distributor has been announced at the time of publication.

News broke on July 11 that Graham, the longtime senator representing South Carolina, had died unexpectedly.
“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness,” a rep for the politician wrote in a statement at the time. “Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.”
Days later, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffery W. Carroll and the District of Columbia Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Francisco J. Diaz confirmed to Us that Graham died “of aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease” after a July 12 autopsy.
“Whenever an autopsy is performed in the District of Columbia, the pathologist also orders comprehensive toxicology testing and microcopy both of which take time to complete,” the statement continued. “As soon as the results are available and the investigation concludes, OCME will communicate with the next of kin and the death certificate will be amended from pending to the cause of death and the classification of the manner of death.”
Graham, at one-time a fierce adversary of President Trump, became a staunch MAGA supporter prior to his death, living up to his “war hawk” reputation by advocating for various overseas conflicts including the war in Gaza and war in Iran.
While speaking about the late senator’s life and legacy, President Trump claimed he was one of the last if not the last person to speak to Graham before his shocking death, claiming the senator told him he was tired.
“So, what makes it even stranger is I got a call last night something in the early evening — maybe in the sevens — and he called and said, ‘We’re all set for the Save America Act,’ the president said while calling into the July 12 episode of NBC’s Meet the Press. (Trump was referring to his controversial voting bill that many experts have argued will actually make it more difficult for U.S. citizens to vote.)
”He was pushing the Save America Act like crazy,” the president continued. “He got back, said he just landed from Ukraine, I said, ‘That’s a long trip.’ He sounded a little tired, but perfect, but a little bit tired — he had the right to be, he was a worker. He was really a worker. But he sounded great, actually. But he actually said he was tired.”
While Graham was proud of his efforts advocating for war in Iran, Trump and his administration are facing increased scrutiny over the unpopular decision to start the overseas conflict — according to a July Washington Post-ISOS poll, 68 percent of Americans say the war in Iran is not worth fighting.
Sara Gilson’s loved ones are remembering the influencer in the days since she was allegedly killed by her estranged husband, Shawn Duffey, in a shocking murder-suicide.
“Her last day, she was happy,” Gilson’s best friend Kelsi Lard told People in an interview published on Sunday, July 26, sharing that she was with her “the same day her life was taken.”
Lard continued, “As always, she was cracking jokes and making me laugh. I will miss her so much. I don’t want her life to be diminished into what happened in the end. She brought so much joy to all of us, and I’ll miss her every day.”

TikTok’s Rebecca Luna has died after documenting her diagnosis with young-onset Alzheimer’s and choosing to end her life with medical aid in dying (MAID). She was 49.
“Rebecca passed away July 25th at approximately 1:15 p.m. surrounded by her loved ones,” a post read via TikTok on Saturday, July 25. “Thank you for your support and privacy.”
Luna’s eldest daughter, Maya, mourned the influencer with the same message via a GoFundMe, created by Luna in June to cover end of life expenses.
“Hi, as a lot of you know I was diagnosed at age 48 with Young Onset Alzheimer’s,” Luna wrote via GoFundMe. “I’m 49 and I will be accessing MAID as my decline has come faster than I had hoped.” (MAID is a practice in which a physician provides a patient suffering from a terminal illness with a prescription for a lethal drug dose, allowing them a purposeful and peaceful death.)
She continued, “I’ve been a single mama (proudly) all my life so my lovely followers suggested I do a go fund me for the end of life expenses so I don’t leave my loved ones behind with that responsibility [on top] of their own grief. All blessings and well wishes are warmly appreciated and I love you all. I couldn’t have come this far without you.”
Luna, who was based in Victoria, British Columbia, first shared her diagnosis on TikTok in April 2025.
“I am in the very early stages of a diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s. I am 48 years old. It feels really weird and vulnerable to put myself out there right now like this. But since I’ve been exploring this with my neurologist, I realized there’s not a lot of resources out there for young people facing this terrible disease,” she said in the TikTok video at the time, adding that she has “been able to connect with a few people” but felt like the disease was “isolating.”
More than a year later, Luna shared her final video on July 22. In the TikTok, Luna explained that she had moved her MAID date to Friday.
“Prior to the dates changing for the last year and a half has been legally and medically not my choice, OK? But for the last two weeks I’ve been making the decision,” Luna said at the time. “And it’s a hard decision to make, I have to tell you, because I’m living in a body that doesn’t feel comfortable, safe, good, nothing. It feels terrible. And so the idea of waiting two weeks felt like too much.”

Scudder claimed that the authorities went through “everything you’ve ever screenshotted, taken a picture of, googled,” calling the experience “embarrassing” and alleging that some agents were laughing when they “came out of this room.”
“So you get taken to, like, a detention center where I was the only girl and they give you no information — they just tell you you’re detained,” she continued, adding that after asking for a blanket she was allegedly told she’s not at the “Beverly Hills Hotel.”
“I said, ‘If I’m here for one to five days, how will I shower?’ They said, ‘Oh, you just wash yourself and dry yourself with your dirty clothes and put them back on,’” she claimed.
Scudder said that after finally calming down and managing to fall asleep, agents shook her awake for her official interview. After answering “the first few questions,” she claimed, she said she knew she was going to be deported.
She said that after a 17-hour flight to the U.S., she was detained for 30-40 hours and then sent back to Australia via another 17-hour flight.
“I love America, but I think the laws — the warning from this, for anyone who does content creation, would be: they really have locked in now on people who do Instagram or make any money from YouTube, OnlyFans, Playboy,” she concluded, adding that if a person is “taking pictures on American soil” they should have a work Visa.

The Kardashian-Jenner family is thinking of their late matriarch, Mary Jo “MJ” Shannon, on her heavenly birthday.
“Happy Heavenly 92nd Birthday grandma!” Shannon’s granddaughter Kim Kardashian wrote via Instagram on Sunday, July 26. “It’s only been a week but wow the amount of things I’ve learned about you this week from going through all of your stuff with mom has been beautiful ! I thought I knew it all! Makes me respect you and love you more if that’s even possible. Today we celebrate you! I miss you like crazy and I love you endlessly my sweet grandma MJ.”
While honoring Shannon, Kardashian, 45, shared a series of photos from an outing with her grandmother and family. In one pic, Shannon stretched her arms above her head as Kardashian smiled in the background. Kris Jenner, one of Shannon’s daughters, also paid tribute to the late matriarch on Sunday.

Earlier this month, Jenner shared that her mom died at age 91.
“Today, we said goodbye to my beautiful Mommy MJ. 😞💔,” Jenner wrote via Instagram at the time. “There are no words that could ever capture what she has meant to me or the heartbreak of having to say goodbye. My mom was the heart of our family.”
Jenner continued, “She taught me everything that truly matters… to love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted. She taught us that family is everything. She showed us how to love unconditionally and how to find joy in the little moments. She showed me how to face life’s challenges with resilience and faith.”
Jenner went on to thank her mom for “every sacrifice you made, every piece of wisdom you shared, and every moment you loved us so completely.”
“I will miss our daily talks, your smile, your laughter … Our hearts are broken, but we find comfort knowing that love like yours never truly leaves us,” she wrote. “Your love will live on in our family, in our traditions, in every moment we are together, and in every life you touched. When I look at my kids and my grandkids, I will forever see pieces of you in all of us. There is not a part of me that isn’t shaped by you.”
She concluded, “And if I have done anything right in this world, it’s because I spent my life trying to live in a way that would make you proud. Trans actress Dylan Mulvaney is seemingly lending her support to CNN reporter and anchor Kaitlan Collins after President Donald Trump compared the two women during the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
On Saturday, July 25, Mulvaney, 29, shared an inspirational quote attributed to former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt via her Instagram Stories — the same quote Collins, 34, shared via Instagram in a recap of the annual fundraiser meant to celebrate the First Amendment — in an apparent nod to the reporter.
