Two big months on the gaming calendar are just around the corner. The pending gargantuan release of Grand Theft Auto VI has seen most studios vacate November and cram their new titles into September and October to avoid being drowned out by one of the pop culture events of the year. The chaos begins next week with the much-anticipated releases of The Blood of Dawnwalker and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, followed by the return of some notable franchises between Control: Resonant, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and Silent Hill: Townfall. Yet, the biggest blockbuster of the month is shaping up to be Marvel’s Wolverine, Insomniac’s much-anticipated follow-up to their much-lauded Spider-Man games.
Wolverine has been through the wringer in terms of development, first being announced in 2021 alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but taking a more winding path that included major gameplay leaks courtesy of Rhysida in 2023 and little official information until last year, when the curtain was finally pulled back. Now, though, the action game has since gone gold, and we know much more about what to expect from Logan Howlett’s new adventure. This will be a much bloodier title than anything involving Peter Parker and Miles Morales, letting players slash through enemies while guiding the grizzled X-Men member on a mission to save vulnerable mutants kidnapped by Bolivar Trask alongside his former Team X members Jean Grey, Sabretooth, and Mystique. With less than a month until release, PlayStation is now digging deeper into the finer features that define how the game is played.
A new trailer has been released that features the voice of Wolverine himself, Liam McIntyre, taking a closer look at the combat and other systems at work in Insomniac’s latest. He describes combat as “fast, fluid, and ferocious,” focused on getting in close and using Logan’s claws to rip into enemies and a mix of kicks and barrages to combo into something both stylish and deadly. However, those sharp claws can also be used for quick stealth takedowns and can be further enhanced with an entire lineup of upgradeable skills that give him access to new moves and adaptations that quite literally change Logan’s DNA, allowing him to deflect attacks, absorb more damage, or even terrify attackers. Dodging, parrying, and landing devastating attacks build up Wolverine’s rage across three tiers that give him more resilience, speed, and animalistic strength that McIntyre says “keeps him in the fight.”
