Walmart return policy: How it works

Published

How the Walmart return policy works

The Budget Fashionista provides this summary of the Walmart return policy for informational purposes only. These policies are subject to change.

Walmart has become a legit competitor to Amazon in recent years. The mass retailer has a huge online product marketplace that complements its in-store department and supermarket offerings. Fortunately, Walmart also has a friendly return policy – so if you get carried away with your online shopping, you can make returns easily.

How long you have to make a return

You have 90 days to return unwanted items to Walmart, which is three times as long as the standard 30-day window many retailers offer. Of course there are exceptions, which are listed below.

You must have proof of purchase to get a refund. Proof of purchase can be a receipt or the record of the purchase within your Walmart.com account. If you don’t have a receipt, you must show a government-issued photo ID. Walmart will check your ID against its database. If your ID is a match, you can exchange your item or get refunded with a Walmart gift card.

Holiday returns

You can return in-store and online purchases made between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 until Jan. 31 of the next year. Marketplace purchases may not qualify for this extended holiday-return window.

Exceptions

  • You must return consumer electronics within 30 days.
  • Wireless phones have a 14-day return window, except for Verizon Postpaid Wireless Phones – these have a 30-day return window.
  • If you purchased a bundle of products, you must return the entire bundle to get a refund.
  • Items with a rechargeable battery must have the battery to qualify for a return.
  • If you assembled the item you bought, you must disassemble it to return it.
  • Freight, oversized, and heavy items cannot be returned to stores. Reach out to Walmart customer service via online chat to get next steps.
  • Private brand items with a satisfaction guarantee noted on the package are not subject to the 90-day return window.
  • Appliances must be returned within two days.
  • Marketplace collectibles or luxury items must be returned within 14 days. Most other marketplace items must be returned within 30 days.
  • Cooling and heating devices have a 30-day return window.
  • Electric bicycles, electric scooters, and hoverboards must be returned within 30 days.
  • Vacuums and floor care devices must be returned within 30 days.
  • Walmart Protection Plans, AppleCare+ plans, and True Network Tech Services must be cancelled within 30 days.
  • Contact lenses, hearing aids, prescription glasses, and prescription contacts have to be returned within 60 days.

The timing of your refund varies by the original form of payment.

Marketplace returns

Walmart Marketplace purchases have a 30-day return window, with exceptions. Appliances generally must be returned within two days, while consumer electronics have a 14-day return window. Collectibles and luxury items must also be returned within 14 days.

Restocking fees

The item’s listing page should outline the return policy and any restocking fees. Some marketplace sellers can assess restocking fees of up to 20%.

How to make a return

Items purchased in a store can be returned to a store. Bring the item with tags and packaging, receipt, and card used to purchase to any Walmart store. If you don’t have a receipt or the card, bring your photo ID.

Items purchased online can be returned with Walmart’s return label. Find your purchase in your Walmart.com purchase history, tap “view details” for the item you want to return. From there, follow the prompts to start a return. You will usually have these options:

  1. Return the item to a Walmart store using a barcode.
  2. Print the return label and mail the item via USPS or FedEx.

Does Walmart have a good return policy?

The Budget Fashionista rates the Walgreens return policy as very good, with a score of 4.25 points out of 5. The mass retailer offers a 90-day return window and free mailed returns. One issue is that the full details of the policy are spread across multiple pages online.

Our Return Policy Score™ score evaluates the key return policy factors shoppers care about most: return window length, condition requirements, refund method, shipping costs, in-store return flexibility, marketplace transparency, processing speed, and overall policy clarity. Each category is rated on a 1 to 5 scale based on how generous, convenient, and easy to understand the policy is. The final score is an average of all categories.

You can find Walmart’s official return policy here.

burgundy pyramid tote

I was going to feature another bag today (this Rag & Bone one on sale!) but then Google made me aware of this sale: Kaai, one of our favorite brands for luxury work bags, is having a sale. I’ve actually never seen them have a sale before, so this feels significant!

The burgundy color of this reader favorite bag was originally $895, but is now marked to $625… nice! This seems to be the only one of the larger pyramid bags on sale, but there are several of the smaller pyramid bags marked down to $595. There are several other nice work bags in the sale, including a north/south tote and a more traditional woman’s briefcase tote.

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

This blouse from Ann Taylor hits the exact right balance of being feminine without being overly juvenile. The fabric looks beautiful, and the coffee brown color will be gorgeous for any season. I’m tempted to also grab this polka-dotted skirt in the same color for an easy spring outfit.

The top is $98 at Ann Taylor and comes in sizes XXS-XXL.

Claire’s Life: Inside Fashion Trust U.S.’s Cocktail Celebrating the 2026 Awards Finalists with Tina Odjaghian, Wayman & Micah, and More!

Claires Life Inside Fashion Trust USs Cocktail Celebrating The 2026 Awards Finalists With Tina Odjaghian Wayman Micah And More IMG 9958

Last night, Fashion Trust U.S. gathered designers, creatives, and close friends of the organization for an intimate cocktail celebration announcing the finalists for the fourth annual FTUS Awards, taking place April 7, 2026, in Los Angeles. Hosted at the home of designer Christy Cham, the evening felt less like a formal industry event and more like a true community moment—one rooted in support, mentorship, and the future of American fashion.

I celebrated alongside familiar faces like Wayman + Micah, Tina Odjaghian, and more, all coming together to toast the next wave of emerging talent. For the occasion, I wore pieces by designers you should know: Chats by Cdam and Fashion Bomb Accessories designer Flore K NY—because if there’s one thing I’ll always stand on, it’s supporting emerging designers in real life, not just online.

The night marked the official reveal of this year’s finalists across Ready-to-Wear, Jewelry, Accessories, and Graduate categories—designers selected by Fashion Trust U.S. Board and Advisory Board members for both their creative vision and business potential. Beyond recognition, the FTUS Awards offer what truly matters: financial support, long-term mentorship, and access to industry leaders who can help move brands forward.

All finalists will also be considered for the Sustainability Award, and this year’s winners will benefit from a Google mentorship program, with Google serving as the presenting sponsor of the 2026 awards. Fashion Trust U.S., founded by Tania Fares, continues to be one of the few organizations genuinely investing in U.S.-based designers—those navigating the often invisible gap between creative promise and commercial success. Last night was a reminder of why that work matters.

Cardi B shot promotional photos for Saturday Night Live wearing a burgundy sequined halter gown from Sergio Hudson’s Spring 2026 collection, styled by Kollin Carter.

The floor-length halter gown featured a high neckline with a keyhole cutout and an elongated silhouette rendered in deep burgundy sequins, creating a sleek, body-skimming finish that reflected light with each movement. The design emphasized clean lines and minimal embellishment, allowing the texture and color of the sequins to take center stage.

For glam, Cardi B wore long, voluminous waves styled by Tokyo Stylez, paired with soft glam makeup by Erika La’Pearl that highlighted her eyes and lips while keeping the focus on the gown. The overall presentation aligned with the polished, fashion-forward tone of Saturday Night Live promotional imagery.

Posh Power Play: Inside the Beckham Family’s United Front in Paris as Brooklyn’s Explosive Feud Rages On

3 Posh Power Play Inside The Beckham Familys United Front In Paris As Brooklyns Explosive Feud Rages On

Victoria Beckham stepped out in full family force at her Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters naming ceremony in Paris this week — and the optics couldn’t have been more calculated.

3 Posh Power Play Inside The Beckham Familys United Front In Paris As Brooklyns Explosive Feud Rages On

Dressed in a striking piece from her own PF26 collection, the fashion designer was flanked by husband David Beckham and three of their children — Harper Beckham, Romeo Beckham, and Cruz Beckham — as they headed to the French Ministry of Culture for the prestigious honor.

The outing comes just days after eldest son Brooklyn Beckham’s shocking public statements accusing his parents of undermining his marriage, contributing to negative press coverage around him, and deeply fracturing their relationship. In a detailed Instagram post last month, Brooklyn claimed he felt controlled by his parents and stated he no longer wants to reconcile with them.

But in Paris, the rest of the Beckham clan presented a picture of unity.

Victoria praised her loved ones in remarks about her award, thanking “family” — especially David, whom she called her “original investor” — underscoring the support system behind her fashion success.

Notably absent from the ceremony was Brooklyn, whose rift with his parents and wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, has become one of the most talked-about celebrity family feuds of the year.

Social media and tabloids have since been abuzz with reactions — from industry commentators dissecting the impact on Brand Beckham, to public support for both sides as the saga continues.

But as Victoria soaked in her honor and her children rallied around her, the message was clear: family unity (for now) is the new fashion moment.

light green suit in seasonless wool

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Also: we just updated our big roundup for the best women’s suits of 2025!

Argent is one of the few reliable options for seasonless suits – as well as colorful suits.

This pretty pistachio suiting is “made of a year-round, refined Italian Seasonless Wool” — and I love the classic cuts. The blazer is lined, but the pants (alas) are not; both are dry clean only.

The blazer is $425, and the trousers are $295.

As of 2026, some of our favorite seasonless suiting includes Ann Taylor and J.Crew on the affordable side, and Theory, Brooks Brothers, M.M.LaFleur and Argent on the more expensive side. For plus sizes, check Lands’ End, and J.Crew — Talbots also used to carry several options. For all suiting options for women, check out our roundup of the best women’s suits of 2026!
