Alcaraz makes history with career Grand Slam in victory over Djokovic
Djokovic looks a little heavy-legged as he fails to get a running return in then misses a forehand half-volley after Alcaraz somehow sprints up and down the court to get balls back in. As Simon just said, nobody else in tennis would have made those balls.
Alcaraz nets a forehand for 15-30, but the Serbian is having to work harder and harder to win points.
He misses a backhand by a mile off his second serve and brings up two break points. He saves them both, sending Alcaraz on his skates until he misses then walloping a forehand down the middle as his opponent moved to his right off a timely first serve.
However, a wayward backhand brings up another Alcaraz break point. Yet another saved. Alcaraz was on all-out defence at the back of the court, nearly next to the ball-kids, Djokovic buried a deep smash nervelessly.
Alcaraz brings up a fourth break point with a deft drop shot after Djokovic has to retreat and stretch for a missile down the line. And Djokovic serves it with an ace into the corner! Showing all the resilience you would expect from a best-of-all-timer.
A net cord denies Djokovic the game after a cross-court forehand winner and Alcaraz gets a fifth break point after just soaking up all the baseline power from his opponent. The game has gone on for 10 minutes and a loose forehand from the pre-match favourite ensures it will go even longer.
Yet another opportunity for “Carlitos” after a driving backhand down the line, yet another break point saved coming forward on the volley after a pinpoint first serve.
He sends Alcaraz out wide with a first serve and returns past him into open court and then holds serve with a forehand into Alcaraz’s body. The crowd roars their appreciation after a 12-minute game.
