A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a man in a ‘violent and shocking’ early hours attack in Ashton town centre.

The man, aged in his 30s, was found with serious injuries, but was sadly pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services, police said.

A 36 year-old man, meanwhile, was later arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

Greater Manchester Police said officers responded to reports of an assault on Bow Street, Ashton Under-Lyne, Tameside, at around 2.40am on Saturday (July 11).

“Upon attendance, we located a man in his early 30s with serious injuries but despite best efforts of emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,” said a GMP statement.

“One man, aged 36, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.”

Appeal issued in ‘early stages of investigation’

Detectives have issued an appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

Det Supt McNabb added:

As we are still in the early stages of our investigation, we are appealing for anyone who may have information to please come forward and report. This can be anyone who may have witnessed the incident itself, or has any footage from the area that may support our enquiries.

‘A violent and shocking attack’

The scene is in the centre of Ashton, near Ashton Market.

Senior detectives said the man was the victim of a ‘violent and shocking attack’.

Detective Superintendent Ian McNabb said:

This is was a violent and shocking attack that tragically took the life of a young man. Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. We are working at pace to establish the full circumstances of this incident, and whilst no formal identification has taken place yet, the believed family of the victim has been informed and is being supported by our specialist officers.We currently have a man in our custody and a scene is still in place at this time. We would also like to reassure the community we believe this to be an isolated attack and poses no wider threat to the public.
