‘Big explosion’ as caravan catches fire on B6277 in Mickleton

Firefighters were called to the B6277 by the service station in Mickleton in rural County Durham just after 2.20pm where the caravan was alight.

One resident told the Echo they heard a “big explosion” while photos taken from miles away show black smoke rising over the dales.

A picture from the scene shows the caravan, appearing to have been towed by a white Range Rover, reduced to rubble.

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 2.23pm today (July 22) to a caravan fire at Mickleton Service Station, on the B6277.

“Firefighters from Middleton-in-Teesdale, wearing breathing apparatus, used two hose reels to put out the fire before leaving the scene at 3.31pm.”

Durham Police has been contacted for comment.

No injuries have been reported.
