The No.1 Binman, also called Ashley, posts videos on TikTok giving people advice on how to make sure their bins are collected and kept clean.

In one of his videos, he has shared some advice on how to keep food waste bins clean and avoid attracting flies.

All you have to do is pick up some large compostable food waste bags and place them inside your food waste bin.

You can fill the compostable bin bag with smaller bags throughout the week.

On collection day, you simply tie the large compostable bag up and remove it from the bin.

You can then add a new liner to the bin for the next week.

He said: “It’s that simple, add your other ones inside it.

“As long as you keep the bin lid closed and out of the sun, it’ll keep it nice and clean and it’ll stop the flies from getting in.”

Ashley added that all councils will accept compostable bin bags when collecting waste.

The government website has a few rules on what liners can be used in food waste bins.

The website says: “There is no requirement for caddy liners to be provided to households or for them to be used.

“Where liners are used, you should promote the use of liners that have the lowest carbon and wider environmental impacts.”

Liners that can be used in the bins include:

  • bio-based biodegradable plastic
  • bio-based compostable plastic
  • bio-based non-compostable plastic
  • fossil-based non-compostable plastic (for example, polyethylene)
  • bio or fossil-based recyclable plastic
  • paper
  • repurposed plastic bags (originally intended for purposes other than food waste collection)
  • reused newspaper

You should not use fossil-based biodegradable plastic or fossil-based compostable plastic liners.

You should check the government website regularly as the list of recommended liner materials is reviewed often.
