Bolton man banned from owning dogs after pet welfare case

Kerry Harwood, 41, of Moss Bank Way, Bolton, admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to his dog, Copper, by failing to provide veterinary care for her ulcerated mammary tumour between July 6 and August 8, 2025.

The offence breaches sections 4(1) and 32(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Harwood was sentenced at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates’ Court on September 1.

He was given a community order, requiring him to complete 20 days of rehabilitation activity and 200 hours of unpaid work by August 31, 2027.

He must also pay a victim surcharge of £114 and costs of £982.30.

The court has applied for deductions from his benefits to recover the total sum of £1,096.30.

His ban on owning dogs is suspended for 28 days to allow him to make suitable arrangements for his current pets.
