Catherine O’Hara death latest: Home Alone co-star Macaulay Culkin shares emotional tribute

“Mama. I thought we had time,” Culkin wrote.

“I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much to say.

“I love you. I’ll see you later.”

O’Hara recently won acclaim for her guest appearance in a dramatic role on The Last of Us.

The show’s star Pedro Pascal shared a photograph of the pair together on Instagram with the caption: “Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world, this lucky world that had you, will keep you, always. Always. The one and ONLY Catherine O’Hara.”

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Kevin Nealon has paid his respects, writing on X: “Catherine O’Hara changed how so many of us understand comedy and humanity. From the chaos and heart of Home Alone to the unforgettable precision of Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, she created characters we’ll rewatch again and again.“

O’Hara’s final public appearance came at last year’s Primetime Emmys on September 14, 2025.

She attended the event alongside her husband, production designer Bo Welch.

Welch is known for his collaborations with Tim Burton on films such as Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and Batman Returns.

The couple met on the set of Beetlejuice in 1987.

Speaking to The Independent before Christmas, the owner of the iconic Chicago house used to film Home Alone recalled the time O’Hara spent getting to know his own family.

“Catherine O’Hara, oh my gosh, she’s the quintessential mom,” said John Abendshien. “She took my six-year-old daughter under her wing, and those two became very close.”

Comedian Tom Green was among the first to pay tribute to O’Hara, writing on X: “I’m so sorry to hear the news that Canadian comedy legend Catherine O’Hara has passed away at 71. She’s kept me and millions of others entertained throughout my lifetime — from her brilliant work on SCTV, to Home Alone, Beetlejuice, Best in Show, Schitt’s Creek, and so many other films and television classics.

“Her characters brought so much joy and laughter to the world. It’s with a heavy heart that I share this today. Rest in peace, Catherine O’Hara — one of the greatest Canadian comedy icons of all time.”

The beloved actor died Friday, January 30 her manager confirmed to Variety. A cause of death has not been reported.
