The grim post-match scenes marred the derby after Celtic won the Scottish Cup quarter-final on penalties
Both sets of fans invaded the pitch in disgusting scenes at Ibrox that led to a member of Celtic’s coaching staff reportedly being attacked.
The Scottish Cup derby clash went all the way to penalties after 120 minutes finished goalless with both sides seeing goals chalked off. In the end, Tomas Cvancara’s penalty decided the shootout, sparking bedlam in the Broomloan End which was packed out with away fans for the first time in eight years.
The celebrations spilled onto the pitch and police had to intervene when fans from the home end encroached in reaction. Amid the chaos, Premier Sports claimed a member of Celtic’s coaching staff had been attacked. Penalty hero Tomas Cvancara also had blood on his shirt at the end but there was no clue as to how that happened.
As police and stewards attempted to get a handle on the chaos, commentator Rory Hamilton said: “One of the Celtic coaching staff has been attacked by an individual. It is an ugly, ugly end to what has been a superb game of football. There is absolutely no need. This is lunacy.”
The harrowing scenes saw both sets of players escorted off the pitch by cops and it’s a sad end to a semi-final in which the atmosphere benefitted hugely from the packed away end.
Former ref Des Roache, speaking to Record Sport as part of live coverage of the game, said: “These scenes are absolutely embarrassing for our game.”
