Claire Sweeney quits Coronation Street after 3 years

Sweeney joined Corrie back in 2023 as Cassie Plummer, a former drug addict and the mother of Tyrone Dobbs.

She started as a villain on the cobbles, having been exposed for drugging Ken Barlow, played by William Roache.

Sweeney’s character now seems to have turned things around and is dating Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson).

Now, Sweeney is set to leave Coronation Street after landing a role as Miss Hannigan in Annie the Musical.

ITV bosses have reportedly known about the 54-year-old’s departure from the show “for a while now”, according to Radio Times, and a “big” storyline has been planned for Cassie’s exit.

A Coronation Street spokesperson, speaking to The Sun, said: “We wish Claire every success playing Miss Hannigan and congratulate her on being offered a role she has long wanted to play. 

“Cassie will be on the cobbles until the summer during which time she will continue to make her presence felt in Weatherfield leading up to a great exit storyline.”

Coronation Street fans took to social media following the news that Sweeney will be leaving the ITV soap, commenting on how much they will “miss her”.

One person, posting on Facebook group Coronation Street Spoilers And News, said: “I was starting to like her character and she’s a talented lady it’s no surprise good luck to Claire.

“Steve will again be on the lookout for another lady.”

Another added: “Aw I’ll miss her, her character has grown on me! She was a great match for Tracey!”

A third viewer commented: “Love the character! Her and Tracy are a proper cat duo.

“She is another very talented actress on stage and screen, good luck with new ventures.

“Don’t kill her off though please Coronation Street.”

Other Coronation Street fans were more excited about Sweeney’s departure from the show.

This person wrote: “Whoop whoop sooner the better.”
