You can find a 1940s themed tea room at the end of the walk
Even though Cambridgeshire is a landlocked county, it is still easy to reach the coast for a day trip. Norfolk is home to a range of beautiful beaches that you can explore with your family to get outdoors.
Summer might be the ideal time for a beach trip if you want to enjoy some sunbathing but it is still worth taking the time to visit the coast during the winter thanks to the possibility of seeing some adorable seals. From late August through to February, seals will appear along the coastline for pupping season.
This National Trust walk will take you along the coast and around Horsey so you can spot seals. It also features a vintage tea room that you can stop off for some tea and cake.
The walk starts at the Horsey Windpump National Trust car park where you can find Horsey’s Café for a quick coffee. It takes around two hours to complete.
From the car park, you will walk across the road and through the gates. You will see Horsey Windpump at the start of the walk, which was the last tower mill built in the Broads, and offers a good spot for birdwatching.
You will then head through a field keeping the ditch on your left. Here you might pass by some livestock in the field and spot birds including waders and geese.
When you reach the end of the field, you will go through a gate and follow the pathway. When you get to the end of the track, you turn right onto a narrow lane and then turn left at the junction of two red brick cottages and follow the grassy track.
By following the track, you will reach the sand dunes that run along the coast where you will find designated access tracks to walk over them. From here, you might be able to spot grey and common seals with their pups. You can chat to the Friends of Horsey Seals to learn more about the animals.
After watching the seals, you can follow the same route back to the car park. Along the way, you might want to stop off at Poppylands 1940s tea room.
The tea room is described as being a 1940s immersive experience with plenty of vintage decorations and staff dressed in Second World War inspired outfits. At the tea room, you can enjoy a range of sandwiches and hot meals as well as cakes and drinks to help warm you up after your winter walk.
The Horsey Windpump car park is just under a two hour long drive away from Cambridge via the A11.
