Colleen had previously lived in Italy with her family, when her footballer husband Aaron Ramsey, played for Juventus.
She has mastered both Welsh and Italian, effortlessly engaging in chats with residents. Requesting coffee, conversing at markets, and absorbing the pulse of daily Italian existence seems like second nature to her. She explained: “I was having two lessons every week. Italian is an easy language to fall in love with.”
Owain proves to be the ideal travel partner, as he’s keen to learn about the country and its culture. Inquisitive, He explained: “Our trip is going to be an opportunity to learn. Not just about Italy, but about each other as well.
“Seeing the place through her eyes and from her perspective is something really special.”
The opening episode transports viewers to Lucca, a city that captivates all the senses. Surrounded by ancient walls and brimming with music, cuisine and traditional crafts, Lucca makes an unforgettable impact.
Colleen shared: “The appeal of Lucca is obvious – it plays on all your senses.”
Food, predictably, remains central to their journey especially with Colleen’s connection to cooking. She makes no apologies for what matters most to her as she jokes: “I hate shopping, but when it’s about food, that’s fine.”
Their trip to a wine cellar sees them sampling Barolo – Colleen’s preferred choice – with bottles priced from £97 to an eye-watering £20,000 stored in the cellar.
Owain said: “Coming to Italy with Colleen, someone who has lived here and someone who obviously enjoys cooking and food, is such an eye-opener for me
“You see another side of these cities and see how people live, and a huge part of that is buying and preparing food.”
The journey continues to Bologna in the second episode, widely considered Italy’s culinary capital. During their visit, the duo collect ingredients for a traditional Italian dish before participating in a cookery lesson, mastering the craft of handmade pasta.
During the series the friends get to know eachother whilst sharing amusing anecdotes, including Owain previously drumming for Bonnie Tyler. Colleen also shares how she remembers “kind of” encountering George Michael and also declining an invitation from Elton John due to worries that her children might damage something in his home.
You can watch Ciao! Colleen ag Owain on S4C, BBC iPlayer and S4C Clic from 8.25pm on Monday, February 2.
