DWP August 2026 payment date change confirmed

Published

on

Wales Online

Millions of benefit claimants could see their DWP payments arrive early in August 2026 due to the summer bank holiday

Millions of people claiming benefits could experience delayed payments from the Department for Work and Pensions next month, due to the summer bank holiday on Monday, August 31. Other payments will be issued as usual for the majority of the month.

Wales, England and Northern Ireland have the summer bank holiday on the same date. Payment dates that coincide with bank holidays are typically processed on the preceding working day.

Official government website guidance regarding bank holiday payments states: “Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit union account.

“If your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday you’ll usually be paid on the working day before. This may be different for Child Benefit,” reports the Liverpool Echo.

Currently, approximately 24 million people across the UK claim some form of DWP-administered benefits, including state pension recipients, accounting for roughly one in three individuals. For money-saving tips, sign up to our Money newsletter here

The benefit payments that could be impacted by the August bank holiday include:

  • State pension
  • Universal Credit
  • Pension Credit
  • Child Benefit
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance

The revised payment schedule also affects the state pension. The basic state pension is normally transferred directly to your bank account every four weeks.

The specific day you receive it corresponds with the final two digits of your National Insurance (NI) number. Here’s when payment should arrive based on those digits:

00 to 19: Monday

20 to 39: Tuesday

40 to 59: Wednesday

60 to 79: Thursday

80 to 99: Friday

The altered dates mean that funds will need to stretch further than in previous months, due to payments being made earlier. Should you be anticipating your benefits but they haven’t landed into your account, you’ll need to contact the Department of Work and Pensions on 0800 328 5644.

Bear in mind that the DWP may be closed during bank holidays.

Leopards recover in Zambia as communities swap skins for synthetics

Leopards recover in Zambia as communities swap skins for synthetics

Conservationists say a switch from real leopard skins to synthetic furs in traditional ceremonies has helped reduce poaching and boost leopard numbers in western Zambia

Big cat conservationists in Zambia say leopard numbers are rebounding thanks in part to local communities swapping real furs for synthetic in traditional ceremonies.

Leopards are revered by cultural and religious groups which use their prized pelts as ceremonial regalia.

In western Zambia, during an annual event marking the onset of the flood season, 200 paddlers ferry the king of the Lozi people, the Litunga, on a barge. They wear skirts fashioned largely from leopard skins, and demand for the striking outfits is believed to have been one of the drivers of leopard poaching.

Now the tide appears to be turning following a programme led by the global wild cat conservation organisation, Panthera.

Consulting with communities, the organisation sourced quality synthetic furs, coined Heritage Furs, and secured a royal stamp of approval, with the Litunga decreeing that only Heritage Furs should be worn in official ceremonies.

The shift to Heritage Furs could save between 204 and 1,310 leopards in the region over a decade

Across southern Africa, Panthera has supplied more than 22,000 Heritage Furs, but in-depth evaluation of the initiative’s impact has been limited until now. Fresh research published in the journal Conservation Biology shows that leopard numbers in western Zambia are recovering, poaching incidents are down, and just 10% of the Litunga’s paddlers favour real furs over the alternative.

The collaborative study involving numerous organisations suggests that a shift to Heritage Furs could save between 204 and 1,310 leopards in the region over a decade, while also acknowledging the role of counter-trafficking measures and enforcement in the conservation success.

Lead author and Panthera scientist Aditya Shekhar Malgaonkar wrote: “Our results provide the first empirical link between a demand-reduction initiative based on synthetic substitutes and measurable population recovery of species.”

The Met Office issued its forecast for the next week, which is set to be warm and sunny in York and North Yorkshire whilst a heatwave blasts the south of the country.

The night will remain mostly dry with clear spells, and temperatures will drop to a minimum of 15C.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Gregory Wolverson said: “This is a short-lived spell of heat, but temperatures will climb quickly through the first half of the week, particularly in the southeast.

“By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30°Cs, and while the heat will not be widespread across the whole of the UK, it will be enough for parts of the southeast to likely meet official heatwave criteria by Thursday.

The UKHSA said: “The existing yellow heat-health alert for the East Midlands, East of England, South East and London has been upgraded to amber and will be in place from 9am on Tuesday, July 28, until 9am on Thursday, July 30.

“A yellow heat-health alert will remain in place for Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, and South West regions for the same time period.

Despite some rainfall over the weekend and through the coming week, particularly over Scotland and Northern Ireland, wildfire conditions are forecast to remain elevated over much of England and Wales this week.

A National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) spokesperson said: “Fire and rescue services have already faced significant pressure this summer, responding to wildfire incidents during prolonged spells of warm and dry conditions.

“With the potential for further hot weather ahead, services remain prepared and ready to respond.”

Man stranded for a month in Pacific Ocean after sailboat nightmare reveals how he survived

A sailor left stranded in the Pacific Ocean for more than a month after a trip to Hawaii turned into a nightmare has revealed how he survived.

Kai Sato set off from Catalina Island off the California coast on June 7, hoping to sail across the Pacific for the first time solo.

But two weeks into his 2,500 mile journey, his boat’s mast snapped. When he ran out of gas trying to get back to shore and his phone died, the 39 year-old was left drifting in despair at the mercy of the elements.

“I cried for a whole week, just drifting south, like miserable,” Sato told Hawaii News Now. “I was literally like a sitting duck, just getting taken south by the current going way off course.”

When all hope seemed lost, Sato told the outlet that he eventually came up with a plan to jerry-rig the sails, using kayak paddles and PVC pipes.

With the patched-up boat it would take him another month to reach the shipping lane between California and Hawaii.

To survive, Sato told Hawaii News Now he ate oatmeal, as well as fish or squid that landed in his vessel.

After running out of drinkable water on July 11, he filled buckets with seawater and placed plastic bags over the top of them to collect the condensation.

“I was just licking that to survive,” Sato told the outlet.

Finally, last Tuesday, the intrepid adventurer he gained the attention of a Pasha Hawaii ship who rescued him.

The crew threw down and roap and he managed to climb aboard their ship.

“Oh my God, yeah, like ecstatic, you know what I mean?” Sato told Hawaii News Now. “I was like crying and like so happy, and then they got me fruit and water, and yeah, they were so good to me, those guys.”

His generous benefactors gave Sato clothes and food after he was forced to live off scraps for weeks. The Pasha Hawaii crew posed for a picture with their newest member, seen beaming in a phone shared the local news outlet.

Sato added that he is now staying with a relative, but is planning his next adventure already. Despite the setbacks of his Hawaii trip he plans on sailing next to the Philippines, some 7,500 miles away from Catalina Island.

Roberts, 35, and John, 36, exchanged vows outdoors at the actor’s family estate in Sun Valley on Saturday – with Roberts’ superstar aunt Julia Roberts and her husband Danny Moder in attendance, as well as stars Demi Moore, Kristen Stewart and Sarah Paulson.

In photos obtained by The Daily Mail, the bride, who previously called off an engagement to Evan Peters, wore a custom white gown with asymmetrical sleeves by Monique Lhuillier, as reported by Vogue – and was seen giggling as she exchanged vows with a dapper John.

Before striking up her romance with John, Roberts said she didn’t want to date any more actors.

She told Flaunt: ‘One day the veil was lifted and I didn’t want to date actors anymore. It’s hard, I think, for two actors to be together.’

‘I’m trying to think if I’ve seen it done successfully,’ she pondered before noting her actor father Eric Roberts has been married to Crack Me Up star Eliza Garrett for over 30 years.

‘Also, the actors I’ve been with border on method actors, and that is something that I think is extremely difficult to be in a relationship with – at least for me, especially the characters that they were playing,’ she told the outlet.

Best VPNs to protect your cybersecurity after the UK ban ruled out

VPNs, or virtual private networks, are a hot topic at the moment, with demand for the cybersecurity tool surging after the Online Safety Act. It’s been one year since the government enforced its under-16 social media policy – and it’s now ruled out plans to restrict VPN usage in the UK.

The Online Safety Act allows Ofcom (the country’s official communications regulator) to enforce extra safety checks on users, in particular, mandatory age checks on anyone looking for adult content. The process involves uploading government-issued ID, such as passports and driving licences, and uploading biometric data or financial information to prove your age and access content.

Naturally, this has led to concerns about handing over sensitive personal data to certain websites, some of which may be quite far down on the scrupulous scale. The new rules aren’t just restricted to adult content sites; dating apps, social media platforms, gaming sites and even forums like Reddit are included too.

The Act aims to transform the UK’s digital landscape and make the country “the safest place in the world to be online.” The primary aim is to protect children from searching for and looking at harmful content – a worry that’s always heightened for parents during the summer holidays.

An aim everyone can get behind, it does leave adult users, especially the child-free ones, blinking in the new digital dawn, feeling vulnerable. This was only exacerbated when the government began exploring VPN restrictions – and even an outright ban – earlier this year.

Following a surge in VPN downloads, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology launched a public consultation in March which investigated whether children are bypassing age restrictions by using VPN’s. However, the government has now confirmed it will not ban or age-gate VPN services after its findings showed little evidence.

To learn more about the VPN services, what they do and how to install one, Standard Shopping spoke to cybersecurity expert Marijus Briedis, CTO at NordVPN.

“VPN stands for virtual private network, and it provides the ability to establish a secure network connection even when you’re using unsafe public Wi-Fi. A VPN will encrypt your online traffic and keep your virtual location hidden.”

Why should you consider getting a VPN?

“Primarily to protect their privacy and security online, especially when using public Wi-Fi networks, which are often vulnerable to hackers and other malicious actors.

A VPN encrypts the data you send and receive, creating a secure tunnel that shields your information from being intercepted by cybercriminals, internet service providers, or anyone else on the same network, such as in cafes or airports.

This encryption makes it much harder for third parties to spy on your online activities or steal sensitive information, like passwords and credit card details.

Additionally, a VPN masks your real IP address, adding a layer of anonymity that helps reduce tracking and profiling by websites, advertisers, or network administrators.

Using a VPN also helps bypass internet censorship and can prevent internet throttling imposed by ISPs [internet service providers], ensuring a more open and faster browsing experience.

Overall, a VPN enhances your online safety by securing your connection, especially on unsecured networks, protecting your digital identity, and providing more control over your internet freedom and privacy.”

Which VPN is the most trusted?

“The most trusted VPNs are those that provide strong encryption standards, such as AES 256-bit encryption, to ensure data security, combined with a strict no-logs policy that guarantees the provider does not store user activity data.

Additional security measures such as malware protection, kill switches, and leak protection are important, as is compatibility across various devices and ease of use on different platforms.

Based on expert reviews and extensive testing in 2025, NordVPN is consistently regarded as the most trusted VPN service due to its robust security features, independently audited no-logs policy, extensive server network, and reliable performance.

Other highly trustworthy VPNs include those offering high privacy standards and strong security practices as well.”

Are VPNs easy to set up? What are the steps?

“VPNs are generally easy to set up, especially when using popular commercial VPN providers that offer dedicated apps designed for simplicity and quick installation.

The most straightforward method is to choose a reputable VPN service, sign up for an account, then download and install the provider’s app on your device, whether it’s a computer, smartphone, or tablet.

After logging in with your credentials, you typically just need to select a server or rely on the app’s automatic recommendation, and connect with one click or tap.

This process encrypts your internet traffic and routes it securely through the VPN server, usually within a few minutes, making it suitable even for beginners.”
