An elderly man has died after he was pulled from the water in Co Donegal following a major rescue operation.

Passersby spotted the victim, who was in his 60s, in the sea at Ned’s Point near Buncrana and raised the alarm.

Members of the public helped take his body from the water at around 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Gardai, the National Ambulance Service, the fire brigade and the RNLI all responded and were present at the scene.

There were extensive attempts to resuscitate the man, but sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital, where a post-mortem is due to be carried out.
