Emmerdale fans criticise ‘insufferable’ April Windsor

These opinions were expressed about April Windsor, who has been played by Amelia Flanagan on the ITV show since 2014.

She is the daughter of Marlon Dingle and Donna Windsor, who died on the programme in 2014.

April has been involved in some major storylines in recent years, including when she got pregnant, ran away from home and then gave birth to a stillborn child.

However, not every Emmerdale viewer has been a fan of her presence on the show, as a post on the r/Emmerdale Reddit page made clear.

The user wrote: “I’ve read comments about how Emmerdale became the April show. I am behind and watching episodes from last year and it’s already getting on my nerves how much April is at the centre of the episodes.

“Why did she run away in the first place? It makes zero sense. She knew she would be supported if she told her dad and Rhona [Marlon’s wife] that she was pregnant.

“But what is really giving me the rage is how she is with Marlon. I would never let my child speak to me like that.”

Emmerdale fans criticise ‘insufferable’ writing for April Windsor

A few people replying to the post seemed to agree with that opinion, with some describing the writing for her as “unbelievable” and “insufferable”.

One person wrote: “You’ve seen nothing yet. She gets worse and so does her acting.

“Marlon’s parenting skills reach rock bottom as he takes advice from April on how to handle this situation, it’s hilarious how unbelievable this story gets.”

Another shared: “I eventually just fast forwarded any time she/marlon/rhona were on. It was insufferable.”

A third commented: “She used to be a great character but they ruined her.”

One person replying to the thread felt that Amelia’s acting was “spot on”, but they blamed the scriptwriters for the individual stories.

Another said: “Oh trust me… it gets worse. She treats Marlon and Rhona like s***. There is no reason for her to do half of what she does she is entitled and bratty.”

Meanwhile, one person defended the more recent storylines for the character, saying it was natural, given how much they had gone through.

They explained: “I’m not a fan of some of the latest April storylines, but I think we need to bear in mind that she’s a good kid who’s been through a lot of trauma. And I think when we’re gone through horrific experiences, we aren’t always the best versions of ourselves.

“By contrast, it would be easy to blame Marlon and Rhona’s parenting. But there’s no quick fix for April’s trauma. Mary said as much.

“As frustrating as it can be, I think we need to remember that these are decent people trying to do the right thing in situations that sometimes feel impossible to get right.”

They concluded their post by sharing hope that the character had some “lighter stories” on the horizon.
