Three people have died from the virus following an outbreak on a cruise ship
- Three people have died following a Hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship
- One man, a 69-year-old Brit, was also evacuated to Johannesburg and is currently receiving treatment in intensive care.
- Hantaviruses are a family of viruses which can cause serious illnesses and death.
- These viruses cause diseases like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
- Contagion typically comes about following contact with urine or faeces from infected rodents.
- Early symptoms can include, fatigue, fever, muscle aches, primarily in large muscle groups like thighs, hips, back and sometimes shoulders.
- Other symptoms include headaches, dizziness, chills and abdominal pains like nausea, diarrhoea or stomach pain.
