  • One man, a 69-year-old Brit, was also evacuated to Johannesburg and is currently receiving treatment in intensive care.
  • Hantaviruses are a family of viruses which can cause serious illnesses and death.
  • These viruses cause diseases like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
  • Contagion typically comes about following contact with urine or faeces from infected rodents.
  • Early symptoms can include, fatigue, fever, muscle aches, primarily in large muscle groups like thighs, hips, back and sometimes shoulders.
  • Other symptoms include headaches, dizziness, chills and abdominal pains like nausea, diarrhoea or stomach pain.
