Everything you need to know about ‘rapid’ review at Cambridge hospital

  • Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) has commissioned a “rapid but thorough” review of its neuroscience unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. This unit is responsible for treating critical conditions such as complex brain injuries and head trauma cases.
  • The inquiry will be conducted independently by experts from two official Royal Colleges. This step was taken following specific concerns raised regarding aspects of the neuroscience services.
  • Rather than focusing on a single staff member, the investigation will examine the work of several clinical teams across the service. The goal is to identify ways to strengthen clinical governance and management within these departments.
  • Hospital officials stated that patient safety remains their highest priority and that they take all concerns seriously. They believe that commissioning external reviews is best practice for maintaining high standards of care.
  • The investigation is expected to conclude soon, with the formal review process finishing by the end of February 2026. A full report containing the findings is scheduled to be published in the summer.
  • CUH has pledged to be open with the public by publishing the results once the review is completed. The trust has also committed to acting on every recommendation suggested by the independent investigators.
  • This review follows a separate investigation into a suspended paediatric surgeon at the same hospital last year. That previous case highlighted missed opportunities for the trust to act on clinical concerns earlier.
  • This specific neuroscience review is part of a broader effort led by the Chief Medical Officer to improve safety processes. It sits alongside ongoing work to modernize how the hospital monitors and delivers its medical services.
