Fire crews tackle major field fire in farm in Craghead
Firefighters responded to a call just after 3.00pm on Saturday (August 1) about the blaze at a farm between Craghead and Blackhouse.
The road near White House Farm was closed by police as drivers reported the flames and smoke sweeping over the carriageway on social media.
About 90,000 sq m of field was said to be on fire.
A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At 3.05pm we were called to a fire at White House Farm, Lower Lane, Craghead, Stanley, involving part of a cereal site.

“At its peak, four fire appliances and one bulk water carrier were in attendance from High Handenhold, Consett, Durham and Spennymoor.
“Approximately 90,000 square metres of harvested field was involved in the fire. Crews utilised one jet, four hose reels and farm machinery.
“The fire was surrounded at 4.32pm and we were supported by police for road closures and by the farm owners for machinery.
“We remain at the scene damping down.”
A road closure remains in place on Lowery Lane between White House Farm and Humbleburn Lane while emergency services continue to work on scene.
