Large plumes of smoke could be seen in the sky
Firefighters remain on the scene of a large building fire in Cambridgeshire. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue were called to a “well-developed” fire at the Biffa Waste Management Transfer Station in Marston Road, Eynesbury, just before 11am on Tuesday (August 11).
More than 200 tonnes of waste had caught fire. Locals were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while the fire was dealt with.
Firefighters have provided an update on the fire as they remain on site on Wednesday (August 12). A fire spokesperson said: “At 10.52am on Tuesday, crews from Wisbech, March, Chatteris, Yaxley, Cambridge, Sawtry, Littleport and St Neots, alongside crews from Bedfordshire were called to a building fire on Marston Road, Eynesbury.
“Firefighters arrived to find a large, well-developed fire in a building involving recycled materials. They worked incredibly hard in sectors to extinguish the fire wearing breathing apparatus and using hose reels.
“Members of the public were asked to close windows and doors if they were affected by the smoke and to stay away from the area. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental. Crews will continue to be on scene today and will be reinspecting the area.”
