A foodie has ranked five different types of tomato ketchup in a blind taste test – and there was an unexpected winner that came out of the experiment
Ketchup is a condiment that holds a special place in British hearts. From bacon sandwiches to chips, it’s been a kitchen staple for decades.
Heinz has long been the go-to brand, having dominated UK households for nearly 150 years. But a recent blind taste test suggests there might be a new contender for the throne.
Food enthusiast Becca, who shares content under the handle Beccaeatseverything on social media, set out to discover which ketchup truly deserves the top spot.
To ensure fairness, she conducted a blind tasting of five different ketchups and provided her unfiltered opinions. Here’s how they ranked….
Coming in last was Daylesford’s organic ketchup, receiving a dismal 1/10 despite its premium £6.50 price point.
Becca criticised its peculiar consistency, describing it as resembling jellied tomatoes, being overly watery, and far too sugary.
Fourth place went to Tesco’s own-brand tomato ketchup. Becca remarked: “It lacks a lot of sweetness. I don’t think I would enjoy having that with my chips. I’m gonna give that a two and a half out of ten.”
M&S ketchup secured third position with a score of 41⁄2 out of 10. Becca commented: “Way too sweet. Way too much vinegar. It’s a shame because the tomato flavour is actually really good.”
Then came the moment for the top two spots. Securing second place was Heinz, which Becca recognised straight away.
She remarked: “It’s a little bit too tangy but it’s still a really good tomato ketchup. I would give that a. 8.5/10.”
Taking the top spot, and dethroning the traditional favourite, was Aldi’s own-brand offering. Remarkably, this was also the second most affordable option tested, priced at just 89p.
Becca commented: “That’s a pretty good tomato ketchup. It’s sweet, but it’s got a tang from like a balsamic vinegar. It’s got some lovely spices in there. I love that! That is a ten out of ten.”
