Footage leaks of EA’s Iron Man game but can it beat the Marvel curse?

A trailer for EA’s Iron Man has appeared online and despite it not being finished, it looks very impressive.

Marvel’s Wolverine, from Spider-Man developer Insomniac, might be just around the corner, but there are several other Marvel games still in development. 

Marvel’s Blade and Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra are both in the works, although their futures are in question. Arkane Lyon is developing the former, and were recently affected by Xbox layoffs, while the latter has been delayed several times and still doesn’t have a release date. 

The other known quantity seemingly stuck in development hell is EA’s Iron Man game, from Motive Studio. It was announced in 2022 but we haven’t seen anything from the project since, with many of the team being shifted to support Battlefield 6. 

However, EA has insisted the title is still in the works and now some evidence has emerged via leaked footage on Reddit. While we can’t share the clip here, for legal reasons, it appears to be a trailer for the game, albeit with missing assets in several scenes. 

It’s unclear where the leak stems from but mechanically, it looks very impressive. The clip shows Tony Stark blasting around New York and clobbering enemies atop the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier in the sky, with all the rockets and propulsive laser blasts you’d expect from Iron Man. 

Other shots in the footage show a level set in Japan, along with suit customisation and a boss fight against a giant mech. 

This could be a sign that the final trailer will emerge soon, perhaps at a future State Of Play or The Game Awards in December. However, EA’s recent buyout does cast a dark cloud over its future, with major layoffs expected at the company.

In May last year, the company cancelled a planned Black Panther game, so there’s always a danager Iron Man could follow suit. 

It also begs the question of whether a game based around Iron Man can break the Marvel curse. Almost all games based on Marvel IP, since the start of the MCU, have underperformed, including Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns.

Insomniac’s success with Spider-Man is the key outlier, along with Marvel Rivals which still has a sizeable player base two years later. And, more importantly, is free.

The big test will be Marvel’s Wolverine, which has a massive budget, equivalent to Spider-Man, but a superhero with a less unique set of skills.

It’s unclear when EA’s Iron Man will come out (if it ever does), but this footage proves the project does exist somewhere and has got quite far.
