The vessel arrived in Wales after travelling from Cherbourg, the French Navy’s third-largest port
A large vessel spotted in Cardiff Bay has been confirmed as a French Navy patrol boat passing through the area as part of a wider operational deployment. The striking ship attracted attention from locals, prompting questions of why the ship had docked in the Welsh capital.
A spokesperson for France’s Atlantic Maritime Prefecture confirmed to WalesOnline that the vessel arrived from Cherbourg, France (the French Navy’s third-largest port), and is operating under the command of the Atlantic Zone.

The vessel made a stopover in Cardiff as part of its transit and is currently off the coast of Cardiff in British waters. The stopover is not part of its fishing enforcement mission in the UK.
The French authorities added: “We are delighted to be off the coast of Cardiff in British waters.”
