Visitors to a Cambridgeshire nature reserve have been urged to help “protect” it due to a “high risk of fire”. Wicken Fen Nature Reserve has told the public to not bring or light barbeques there due to the “hazardous summer season”.
Visitors have also been asked to not smoke there and to dispose of all litter or take it home. This follows a “devastating fire” at Dunwich Heath, which grew to the equivalent of 220 football pitches in size, according to the National Trust.
A spokesperson for Wicken Fen Nature Reserve added: “Our thoughts are with our colleagues on the Suffolk Coast. We are also mindful of what a fire could mean at Wicken. Thank you for helping us to keep the Fen as safe as possible in this hazardous summer season.”
Firefighters were called at about 5pm on July 29 to a wildfire, which later spread onto Dunwich Heath. The entire landscape was engulfed in flames.
