Highs of 31C forecast for York by Met office as alert issued

The Met Office expects temperatures to rise from Monday (August 9) and reach 30C by Tuesday and 31C on Wednesday.

Clear skies are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday turning to clouds and highs of 23C-26C at the end of next week.

It comes as a yellow heat health alert was issued for York on Saturday until Tuesday.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the heat alert and warned the latest high temperatures could put extra pressure on the NHS, with more vulnerable people likely to require medical treatment.

Mike Silverstone, the Met Office’s deputy chief forecaster, said rising temperatures mean a “fairly widespread heatwave is likely across large parts of England and Wales, with hot conditions developing in places”.

“The heat is expected to peak for much of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland on Wednesday, with up to 34C possible in parts of central and southern England and southeast Wales. East Anglia and south-east England, however, could see temperatures even higher on Thursday.

“Humidity levels are also expected to increase through the week, which may make conditions feel more uncomfortable, particularly overnight.”

The hot weather comes after last month was confirmed to be the driest July for England and Wales since records began in 1836, according to provisional figures released by the Met Office.

Nineteen counties across England recorded effectively no rainfall – 1mm or less – across the whole of the month, Met Office figures show.
