How Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s American dreams failed as family leave California after tanked million-dollar Hollywood deals

Harry and Meghan laid bare their grievances with the Royal Family in their explosive six-part Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, released in 2022

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell decision to move their family back to Britain six years after fleeing royal life is likely to be seen as the most dramatic admission yet that their grand plans to conquer America have failed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex swept into California in 2020 with Hollywood seemingly at their feet, armed with their royal titles, global fame and blockbuster deals worth tens of millions of dollars.

There was a reported $100 million Netflix agreement. A $20 million Spotify contract. Podcasts, documentaries and television shows were promised.

Archewell Productions was supposed to turn the Sussexes into serious Hollywood power players, while Meghan later attempted to reinvent herself as a lifestyle entrepreneur.

They settled into a $15 million mansion in sun-kissed Montecito, surrounded by billionaires and A-list celebrities, as they embarked on what was supposed to be an extraordinarily lucrative second act.

But six turbulent years later, the couple are heading back across the Atlantic.

News that Harry and Meghan plan to return to Britain for an extended period and enroll Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, in an English school suggests the couple have accepted that their American adventure has not delivered the glittering commercial empire once envisaged.

The Spotify deal is long gone. Their original Netflix contract has ended. The duchess’s With Love, Meghan lasted two seasons.

A string of heavily promoted projects either struggled to find audiences or never materialized at all.

Even the couple’s first jointly produced feature documentary, Cookie Queens, endured a humiliating opening weekend this month when it was beaten at the US box office by a compilation of internet cat videos.

And their difficulties have stretched far beyond television.

Meghan’s lifestyle business endured an embarrassing start when American Riviera Orchard, a name unveiled with enormous fanfare in 2024, was eventually abandoned and replaced with the considerably shorter As Ever.

Her first Spotify series, Archetypes, ended along with the couple’s lucrative deal with the streaming giant, while her subsequent Confessions of a Female Founder podcast failed to generate anything approaching the cultural impact of the couple’s earliest post-royal ventures.

There have also been repeated reports of staff upheaval, including the departure of senior communications executives, while critics have questioned whether Meghan has managed to secure a place among America’s celebrity elite that once appeared to be hers for the taking.

The Duchess was absent from the Met Gala this year and reports have even claimed she was attempting to secure invitations to Paris Fashion Week events as her standing in the fashion world came under scrutiny.

Against that bruising backdrop, the timing of the Sussexes’ return to Britain is remarkable.

Sources close to Harry briefed at the weekend that his family reunion with King Charles last month left the Duke feeling ‘buoyed,’ ‘very happy’ and ‘really energized.’

Crucially, they added: ‘He wants to spend more time in the UK with his family.’

He will now get his wish.

Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are understood to be returning to Britain before the end of August for an ‘extended period,’ with their two children believed to have already been enrolled at a British school.

The family are expected to establish themselves in a private, non-royal residence and could remain in Britain while Archie and Lilibet complete their education.

But there will be no return to life as working royals.

The King, who is understood to have been informed of Harry’s plans only on Sunday, is said to welcome the opportunity to spend more time privately with his younger son and grandchildren.

But Buckingham Palace’s position on Harry and Meghan’s official status is understood to be unchanged.

There will be ‘no alteration’ to their roles as private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family, in keeping with the arrangements established after their sensational departure in 2020.

The Netflix documentary also showed the couple in deeply difficult moments, with Meghan seen in tears and Harry describing the intense media scrutiny, family tensions and emotional turmoil they said ultimately drove them from royal life

Sources have also insisted that the Sussexes are not plotting a return to the royal fold.

The Sussexes are expected to retain their sprawling Montecito estate, meaning their return is not a clean break with California. They also have a residence in Portugal.

When Harry and Meghan arrived in America, they were among the hottest properties in global entertainment and the money followed almost immediately.

For the couple, America represented freedom.

The move offered financial independence, privacy, sunshine and the chance to build a global media empire free from palace courtiers and the constraints of royal protocol.

In September 2020, the couple signed their enormous Netflix agreement through Archewell Productions, promising documentaries, films, children’s shows and scripted entertainment that would ‘inform’ and ‘give hope.’

Three months later came their lucrative Spotify deal.

It appeared that Harry and Meghan had achieved precisely what they had wanted when they left royal life: independence, enormous earning potential and control over their own global platform.

Initially, the strategy appeared to work as their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021 became a global television event, although it was not part of either streaming deal.

Then came Netflix’s Harry & Meghan in 2022. It was a ratings success in a six-part documentary series, packed with deeply personal claims about their experiences inside the monarchy.

Harry followed it in January 2023 with Spare, his candid memoir detailing everything from fights with Prince William to tensions with Charles and his experiences growing up inside the Royal Family. It made more than 6 million global sales.

The problem for the Sussexes was what happened when the royal revelations began to run out.

The audience appeared far less interested when Harry and Meghan were no longer the subject.

Netflix’s Live to Lead made little cultural impact.

Heart of Invictus, centered on competitors preparing for Harry’s Invictus Games, failed to approach the same attention generated by Harry & Meghan.

Then came Polo, a five-part series about the elite equestrian sport beloved by the Duke.

It failed to crack Netflix’s global top ten and received a dismal 25 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Other grandly announced projects disappeared before audiences ever had the chance to judge them.

Pearl, an animated children’s series being developed by Archewell, was scrapped by Netflix in 2022.

A planned adaptation of Carley Fortune’s bestselling romance novel Meet Me at the Lake was announced with considerable excitement but failed to materialize during the Sussexes’ original Netflix deal.

Spotify proved even more disastrous.

Harry and Meghan signed their reported $20 million agreement with the audio giant in late 2020, with enormous expectations surrounding the kind of programming two of the world’s most famous people might produce.

Yet Meghan’s Archetypes ultimately ran for just 12 full episodes in 2022, plus a Christmas special released under the couple’s earlier Archewell Audio banner.

By June 2023, Spotify and Archewell Audio announced that they had ‘mutually agreed to part ways’.

Then came a brutal public broadside from Spotify executive Bill Simmons.

On his own podcast, Simmons notoriously branded the couple ‘f***ing grifters’ and mocked his experience of attempting to develop ideas with Harry.

‘I have got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea,’ he said.

‘It’s one of my best stories… F*** them.’

Meghan eventually returned to podcasting with Confessions of a Female Founder, this time through Lemonada Media.

But by then the dizzying excitement surrounding the Sussexes’ arrival in America had faded.

The Duchess also attempted to establish herself as a lifestyle mogul.

American Riviera Orchard was unveiled in March 2024 with a hazy Instagram video showing Meghan arranging flowers and cooking in a kitchen.

The name appeared to be a nod to Santa Barbara, the wealthy coastal region that encompasses Montecito and is sometimes dubbed the American Riviera.

What followed was a painfully drawn-out rollout.

Jars of numbered strawberry jam were dispatched to celebrity friends and photographed on social media, but months passed without the anticipated full-scale launch.

Then, in February 2025, American Riviera Orchard abruptly became As Ever.

Meghan acknowledged the original name had limited what she could sell, saying she had secured the As Ever name in 2022 and was now returning to it.

As Ever subsequently launched products including preserves, flower sprinkles, teas and other lifestyle goods, with some releases selling out.

But the brand has not yet transformed Meghan into the Martha Stewart-style commercial force her most enthusiastic supporters once envisioned.

Other ventures have similarly vanished.

Meghan’s 40×40 initiative was launched with celebrity backing on her 40th birthday in 2021, asking 40 friends to spend 40 minutes mentoring women returning to work.

The Duchess predicted the initiative could create a global ‘ripple effect.’ Instead, it also quietly disappeared from public view.

Her children’s book, The Bench, became a New York Times bestseller in the United States but received savage reviews from some British critics and failed to become the beginning of a broader children’s publishing empire.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s attempts to establish herself as a television personality culminated in With Love, Meghan, the glossy Netflix lifestyle series featuring the Duchess cooking, entertaining and dispensing hosting tips from a rented California home.

It survived two seasons but was not renewed for a third.

In yet another flop, Cookie Queens, executive produced by Harry and Meghan through Archewell Productions, follows four Girl Scouts as they compete in the high-pressure world of cookie selling.

Meghan personally helped promote the documentary, discussing her own childhood experiences as a Girl Scout before its theatrical release.

Yet according to reported Box Office Mojo figures, the film managed approximately $354,000 from 446 theaters on its opening weekend.

CatVideoFest 2026, essentially 70 minutes of viral cat footage, took approximately $569,000 despite playing on just 255 screens.

The royal couple had been beaten by skateboarding cats.

Whatever the quality or commercial success of their output, Harry and Meghan have never struggled to generate publicity - their every project still attracts global headlines, even when audiences have proved far less enthusiastic about the content itself

Whatever the quality or commercial success of their output, Harry and Meghan have never struggled to generate publicity – their every project still attracts global headlines, even when audiences have proved far less enthusiastic about the content itself

‘There’s no getting around the optics of finishing five places behind a 70-minute compilation of internet cat videos,’ royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told Fox News.

‘Hollywood can forgive a lot, but being beaten by CatVideoFest is the sort of indignity that writes its own punchline.

‘Harry and Meghan remain extraordinarily effective at generating headlines, but headlines and paying customers are two very different things,’ she said.

‘There was a period when simply attaching their names to something guaranteed enormous curiosity. I’m not convinced that’s true anymore.’

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams similarly pointed to the Oprah interview, Harry & Meghan and Spare as the couple’s genuine blockbusters.

‘What is undoubted is the publicity that accompanies everything they do,’ he said.

But he claimed audiences had proved less interested in projects including With Love, Meghan, Heart of Invictus, Polo and now Cookie Queens.

‘So it’s all about buzz and nothing else, save their link with real royalty,’ he suggested.

The couple have also cycled through a striking number of employees since their relationship began, including repeated changes among senior communications staff.

Commentator Fitzwilliams claimed earlier this year that she had developed a ‘disastrous habit of falling out with Hollywood’s top power brokers’.

Her absence from the Met Gala became another talking point.

So too did reports about her relationships with figures including Lauren Sánchez Bezos, the Kardashians and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

The Sussexes unquestionably remain famous.

Their every move still generates headlines across the world, Meghan continues to operate As Ever and Archewell Productions remains active.

They will also retain their Montecito mansion, leaving open the possibility of continuing to work in America.

But their return to Britain represents a remarkable full-circle moment.

In 2020, Harry and Meghan left the monarchy believing their future lay 5,000 miles away in California.

They had royal fame, Hollywood money and almost unlimited curiosity on their side.

Six years on and a string of abandoned projects later, they are coming home.

Owner of first Scots XL Bully sanctuary welcomes animal welfare licence approval

Published

on

Daily Record

Kerryanne Shaw admits she “hadn’t anticipated how much work it would require” after a two-year fight to have the centre properly licenced.

Owners of a sanctuary for XL Bully dogs have welcomed being granted an animal welfare licence after a two-year legal fight. All Bullie Charity Rescue (ABCR) was twice denied a licence by Angus Council but has now been granted permission to operate.

Based at the Happas Canine Centre near Forfar, the charity is currently looking after 27 dogs in total including four XL Bullies. The licence, which has been approved for 12 months, means the centre will be able to operate as normal for the next year.

Two years ago, XL bullies were banned in Scotland and existing owners had to apply for an exemption certificate. As a result of being a banned breed, hey can’t be bred, sold or re-homed and they must be kept on a lead and muzzled when out in public.

STV News reports a number of changes have been made since the charity first applied for a licence to meet animal welfare standards. Manager Kerryanne Shaw admitted it was more work than initially thought.

She told the news outlet: “We hadn’t anticipated how much work it would require. Thankfully we have managed to get to that standard and are making further improvements.

“Things don’t just stop because we’ve got the licence. All the hard work, determination and care for the dogs has been recognised and we’ve finally managed our goal.

“It has been a difficult, long process, so we’re super chuffed that we’ve got it. It doesn’t really change anything other than we can operate legally from the kennels.”

In a report ahead of the approval, Angus Council noted a “marked improvement” in areas condemned in previous inspections including record-keeping, hygiene and security at the kennels. ABCR will be able to continue to care for the XL Bullies they already have but will not be able to take on more.

A strict limit of 27 dogs total has also been placed on the premises. Inspectors will also visit every three months.

Mark Wilding is a volunteer at the centre and said they are always on the lookout for more help. He said: “I’ve always loved working with larger breed dogs. I wanted to help.

“Some of the situations that some of the animals come from is absolutely awful. I mean horrific.

“So to think that you’re helping any animal out of any of these situations, I think that’s what anybody does it for.

“It’s important for dogs to have this home. They get plenty of love.”

Princess Diana named greatest female style icon of all time

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

She beat Marilyn, Beyoncé and the current Princess of Wales

Princess Diana has been named the greatest female style icon of all time, beating Marilyn Monroe, Kate Middleton and Beyoncé. Almost a third believe Diana remains the ultimate benchmark for timeless fashion.

Marilyn Monroe came second in the style icon rankings followed by Audrey Hepburn and Catherine, Princess of Wales. Beyoncé was fifth, ahead of Rihanna, Madonna, Grace Kelly, Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez.

The research for British heritage clothing brand Cotton Traders found Diana’s influence spans every age group. David Beckham was crowned the greatest male style icon, with one in five choosing the former England captain.

Elvis Presley followed, ahead of David Bowie, Sean Connery, Freddie Mercury and Brad Pitt. Marilyn Monroe’s white halter neck dress from The Seven-Year Itch was voted the most iconic dress in history, narrowly beating Diana’s famous “revenge dress”.

And the little black dress was named the most iconic fashion item ever by almost a third of Brits. Jeans were second, followed by the miniskirt, denim jacket, Doc Martens and simple white T-shirt.

Jools Dickson, Cotton Traders stylist, said: “Many women dream of being a princess for the day, and what Diana did so effortlessly was make that possible for every woman. She didn’t have a stylist or the luxury of the relaxed protocol that royals enjoy today, but she managed to steal the show wherever she went and her ongoing impact on fashion is as relevant now as it was then.

“From jaw-dropping ballgowns to slick suiting, and from sweats and joggers to country tweeds, she could make any look her own. Her simple styling trick was to add the unexpected. Her trademark frill collars were seen under dungarees or with jeans, while she would throw her favourite tailored blazer over a sweatshirt and cycling shorts.

“These sorts of styling tricks are commonplace now, but fashion in the 1980s was not as individual and free as it is today. She was a style pioneer long before Instagram and online shopping, and her distinct way of dressing was literally all her own work.

“The fact people still look to their favourite stars for inspiration shows just how powerful a genuine style icon can be. The best looks do not simply belong to one moment in time. They continue to influence what people wear for decades, which is why we are seeing women from Gen Alpha to the Baby Boomers loving these looks today.”

Jools has created a guide showing how to put together three of Diana’s iconic, down-to-earth looks for Cotton Traders.

David Valadao fights for reelection after years of defying the odds

David Valadao fights for reelection after years of defying the odds

HANFORD, Calif. (AP) — For years, Rep. David Valadao benefited from voting patterns that shifted toward Republicans in his rural, heavily Latino district in Central California, deep in the state’s farm belt where highways crisscross boundless stretches of almond groves, cornfields and dairy feed lots.

This time, that could change.

Across the country, there are signs that Latinos have grown disenchanted with President Donald Trump, especially as the price of gas, fertilizer and groceries keep climbing while funding for healthcare services is declining.

It’s Republican lawmakers like Valadao that could pay the price. He’s no Trump acolyte — if reelected, Valado will be the last member of his caucus who voted for Trump’s impeachment after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol — but his fortunes are inevitably tied to the leader of his party.

Two out of three voters in Valadao’s district are Hispanic, and AP-NORC polling shows that Trump’s national approval rating among Hispanic adults fell by 18 percentage points between March 2025 and July 2026. By comparison, approval among U.S. adults overall dropped 9 points.

Valadao said he isn’t panicking.

“I’ve won in these types of races. I can win again,” he said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I think we should be fine.”

Valadao is trying to maintain a strategic distance from Trump to defy political gravity. His campaign literature says he will “put people before political parties.” At the same time, volunteers at a phone bank in his hometown of Hanford asked wavering voters if it was important to complete Trump’s agenda in Washington, a pitch clearly aimed at partisans.

Few Republicans have frustrated Democrats in election after election like Valadao, a dairyman whose family emigrated from Portugal’s Azores Islands. He’s routinely overcome steep voter registration deficits by honing an independent streak and focusing on local issues like water for farmers. Valadao won a congressional seat in 2012, lost it in 2018, then won it back in 2020.

Last year’s redistricting made his swing district even more blue, and national organizations are pouring in money, making it one of the five most expensive races in the country in terms of advertising. Republicans have spent or booked more than $13 million of airtime and digital messaging through Election Day, while Democrats are slightly behind at $12.6 million, according to data compiled by AdImpact.

To win, Valadao is trying to portray his Democratic challenger — Randy Villegas, a progressive endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders — as too extreme to represent California’s 22nd Congressional District. He said many of his constituents are immigrants that fled countries with socialist-leaning governments “and you are seeing him run on these same kind of policies.”

At a town hall in Bakersfield, where U.S. and Mexico flags adorned the walls, hands shot up in the audience when Villegas asked how many people used Medicaid or crossed the border to get less expensive medical care and drugs.

“This should not be happening in the richest country in the history of the world,” said Villegas, who is campaigning on Medicare for All, a universal healthcare concept popularized by Sanders. “Nobody should have to choose between groceries and seeing a doctor.”

Voters have warnings for incumbents

In a year when control of the House could come down to a single district, Valadao can’t afford to lose voters like Scott Alcoser.

A parts manager at a farm equipment retailer in Hanford, where children ride a 1930s-era carousel under towering palms and trendy coffee shops dot downtown streets, Alcoser is a Republican who has backed the Valadao in previous elections.

But this year he’s undecided. Alcoser said he wants to hear more from Valadao about how he will “care for the community” at a time when working-class families are struggling. According to census data, nearly one in four people in the district live below the poverty line.

“He can understand the times people are going through right now,” Alcoser said. “Any politician should just be really honest with you.”

Valadao has already lost Elena Van Overbeek.

Although the Republican law enforcement retiree has voted for him before, she’s disappointed that prices haven’t come down and she’s worried that health care cuts supported by Valadao “would hurt too many people.”

She plans to cross the aisle to back Villegas.

Valadao still remains popular with some longtime voters in his hometown. Seated in a downtown salon getting her hair styled, retired nurse Margie Lopez called him “a decent man.”

“I don’t trust Democrats,” said Lopez, a Trump supporter.

The salon’s owner, Celestina Rodriguez, is a registered Democrat who describes herself as conservative and plans to vote for Valadao.

“He’s from the area and I know some of his family,” she said.

The Democratic state of play

Villegas prevailed in a caustic primary over state lawmaker Jasmeet Bains, a moderate who was backed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The son of Mexican immigrants who grew up on Medicaid, Villegas accuses Valadao of betraying the district by voting last year for Trump’s “big beautiful bill,” which delivered $4.5 trillion in tax breaks but also cuts more than $1 trillion over a decade from federal health care and food assistance, largely by imposing work requirements on those receiving aid and by shifting certain federal costs onto the states.

Valadao’s district has one of the highest Medicaid enrollment rates in the nation, and Democrats in Congress have estimated that as many as 57,000 of his constituents could lose coverage once new requirements go into effect. Valadao calls such projections “overstated.”

Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna, an outspoken progressive who is considering a 2028 presidential run, said a Villegas victory in a swing district would be a potent national statement that could ripple across the country.

“Everyone understands that the Latino vote is the swing vote,” Khanna said before a rally for the candidate in Bakersfield. “We win the swing vote of the Latino vote, we win Arizona, we win Nevada, we win Georgia.”

Mike Madrid, a Republican strategist who is an expert on Latino voting trends, said the political climate might be impossible for Valadao to survive.

“That district has pretty much everything you could imagine working against the Republican,” Madrid said. “The fundamentals of the race point toward an anti-incumbent mood based off of souring economics.”

A Democratic district with Republican instincts

On paper, Valadao’s district should be a Democratic cakewalk — there is a 16-point registration edge for the party after voters in 2025 approved Gov. Gavin Newsom’s blueprint for redrawing the state’s congressional map.

But the region is far from the coastal metropolises that have made California synonymous with liberal governance.

The Central Valley is known as America’s salad bowl, for its vast production fruits, vegetables and nuts that stock refrigerators and kitchen tables across America. Virtually all the pistachios grown in the country come from California.

“Analysts often underestimate what the people who live and work in the Central Valley of California are about,” said Republican consultant Cathy Abernathy of Bakersfield, who thinks Valadao will prevail. “They think differently than the metropolitan Southern California and San Francisco Bay Area Democrat voters.”

While many receive government assistance, “most think about keeping the job they have, keeping their family lifestyle going and not rocking the boat just to throw their fist in the air,” she wrote in an email.

Valadao didn’t support Trump in 2016, backed him 2020 and declined to say how he voted in 2024.

He demurred when asked about his impeachment vote in 2021.

“I’ll let history decide on how to interpret anything I’ve done,” he said. “I’ve got nothing more to add to that.”

Jeffrey Cummins, who teaches political science at California State University, Fresno, said Democrats will need to closely tie Valadao to Trump to defeat him in a toss-up race.

If they don’t succeed this year, Cummins said, they “may lose hope of ever knocking off Valadao.”

Why Man City summer signing is not in squad vs Coventry City

Published

on

Manchester Evening News

Manchester City are starting one of their new wingers against Coventry City but another doesn’t make the squad

Iliman Ndiaye has been thrown straight into the Manchester City team to face Coventry – but fellow winger Allan misses out. Ndiaye completed a deadline day move from Everton for £65m and is one of two new faces of the summer in the XI alongside Elliot Anderson.

Enzo Fernandez starts on the bench following his move from Chelsea, with Ayyoub Bouaddi and Geronimo Rulli on there as well. However, there is no space for Allan as he works his way back to fitness. The forward, signed from Palmeiras for £35m in the final weeks of the window, is not fit enough to be in the squad for the Coventry game.

He has, though, been named in City’s Champions League squad for their first eight games in the competition so could travel with the team to Porto next week as they look to get off to a winning start. Ndiaye, Fernandez and Bouaddi will also be relishing the prospect of playing on the biggest stage for City.

City can stay top of the Premier League for at least a few more hours with victory over Frank Lampard’s Coventry. They are one of just four teams to have won their opening two games, and Hull City, Chelsea and Arsenal all play later than them this weekend; the two London clubs face each other at the Emirates on Sunday in an early clash between two of the leading teams.

Maresca will have to have the Champions League in mind though given City have one of their tougher fixtures up first with the game against Porto. When they return, they must prepare for the first Manchester derby of the season

Why Enzo Fernandez will either MAKE or BREAK Man City

While we wait for confirmed line-ups (coming shortly), Adam Clery broke down how Man City’s biggest new signing will fit into the squad.

Enzo Fernandez joined from Chelsea in a deal that equals the British transfer record of £125m. This takes Man City’s spending on a ‘new look midfield’ to over £300m, but will this propel them to a serious title challenge this season?

Coventry have no reported injury concerns ahead of their trip to Manchester City. The Championship winners concluded their summer transfer business by signing winger Yann Gboho from Toulouse on deadline day. The 25-year-old is the cousin of PSG and France star Desire Doue.

What is the Manchester City team news?

Enzo Fernandez is “ready” to make his first Manchester City appearance following his record-equalling £125m move from Chelsea on deadline day. Matheus Nunes is fit but Jeremy Doku remains sidelined due to injury. City must make the trip to Portugal to play Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday, which will likely come into Enzo Maresca’s thinking.

Good afternoon and welcome

Hello, hello. Manchester City bid to make it three wins out of three to start the Premier League season as they host Coventry, who I would imagine would absolutely snap your hand off for a point at the Etihad. Frank Lampard’s team lost 1-0 at home to Hull last Saturday and now must face Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and a Manchester City attack that clicked into life quite brilliantly as they won 4-1 at Crystal Paalce last Friday night.

Stay tuned for all the build-up, and team news from 1:45pm.

A Greek air force jet crashed at an aerial show north of Athens, sending plumes of black smoke into the air before several thousand spectators on Saturday.

Officials said it was not immediately clear whether pilots had managed to eject before the crash and that it was unclear whether anyone in the crowd had been injured.

‘A search and rescue operation is under way,’ the official added.

A large fire continues to burn at the crash site and two helicopters were seen battling the blaze on the spot.

Loudspeakers at the air base were urging people to leave the area, according to ERT.

The dramatic moment was captured on video as spectators watched the terrifying incident unfold.

Elon Musk launches his steering wheel-free gold Tesla Cybercabs onto US streets

Elon Musk launches his steering wheel-free gold Tesla Cybercabs onto US streets

Elon Musk sent dozens of self-driving Cybercabs without steering wheels or brake pedals onto the streets of Austin, Texas, on Thursday, betting that Americans will overcome their fears of rides with “no control” and hop inside.

The rollout of the gold-colored Teslas, which give passengers no way to take control in an emergency, comes as the company prepares to launch the service in other cities. Tesla shares have suffered amid a slump in vehicle sales, but they rose more than 5% Thursday on hopes that the futuristic-looking taxis will catch on quickly.

“No steering wheel, no pedals,” Tesla teased on X before the launch. Musk followed with a post showing a giant Cybercab floating above the Austin skyline and later wrote, “A Storm of Cybercabs.”

An invitation-only launch event was expected to be held later Thursday.

It is unclear how soon Musk intends to roll out the Cybercab service, but he needs to move quickly.

Tesla trails self-driving taxi leader Waymo in the number of cabs deployed and trips completed. To catch up, it must demonstrate that its camera-only system can safely navigate streets and avoid pedestrians. By contrast, Waymo and another rival, Amazon’s Zoox, supplement cameras with radar and a laser-based technology called lidar.

Even if the technology works well, Americans still need to be convinced.

A Pew Research Center survey conducted in February found that seven in 10 U.S. adults were “not too” or “not at all” comfortable riding in a driverless car.

Tesla stock was battered last year after Musk took over President Donald Trump’s government cost-cutting campaign, dubbed DOGE, and embraced extreme-right political candidates, sparking protests at Tesla showrooms and boycotts by car buyers in several countries.

Tesla posted a second consecutive annual decline in vehicle sales last year. Its profits plunged, and it lost its crown as the world’s best-selling electric vehicle maker to China’s BYD.

Austin has had a self-driving Tesla “robotaxi” service since June last year, but those cars are equipped with steering wheels and brake pedals. The service, which has since expanded to five other cities in Texas and Florida, initially carried passengers with safety drivers aboard to take over in case of problems.

Tesla has more than 200 “unsupervised” robotaxis in those cities, meaning they operate without safety drivers aboard, according to the monitoring site RobotaxiTracker. Waymo has more than 4,000 such vehicles in 14 cities.

In the Pew survey, 16% of U.S. adults said they would be “somewhat” comfortable riding in a driverless car, while 7% said they would be “extremely” or “very” comfortable.

Separate Gallup polling conducted in 2025 found that skepticism about the safety of driverless cars had risen over the previous several years. More Americans said all or mostly human-operated cars were the safest option than in a 2018 poll.

It is unclear whether Musk is the right person to coax people into cars with no human controls. Another Pew poll conducted in January found that nearly six in 10 U.S. adults had a “very” or “mostly” unfavorable view of him.

Musk eventually hopes to send full self-driving software to hundreds of thousands of Teslas through a software update. That would allow Tesla owners to turn their cars into taxis for hire when they are not using them.

But regulators in the U.S. and overseas have signaled that he still has some convincing to do.

Tesla has not received approval for drivers to use even its partial self-driving software in most European Union countries. In the U.S., where the software has been downloaded and used, regulators have opened several investigations into its safety.

One probe is examining the software’s role in several Tesla crashes in fog, sun glare and other low-visibility conditions, including one in which a pedestrian was killed. Another is investigating dozens of incidents in which Teslas using partial self-driving software ran red lights or drove on the wrong side of the road, sometimes crashing into other vehicles and causing injuries. A third is examining why Tesla apparently violated regulatory requirements by failing to report crashes promptly.
