Human skeletons found as major roadworks could face delays

The roadworks are set to last around a year

Human skeletons have been discovered during major city centre roadworks. Roadworks have been ongoing on the Queensgate roundabout in Peterborough since the start of July as part of the City Link project.

The project is a £65m scheme to upgrade the city’s railway station and connect the city better. As a result, lane closures are in place on the roundabout and these will be in place for around a year.

While carrying out the works, seven human skeletons have been found within the roundabout area. A Peterborough City Council spokesperson said: “Seven human skeletons have been found on land deep within the Queensgate roundabout, which is currently being developed as part of the City Link project.

“An archaeologist believes that these remains date from a cemetery which existed on this site during the Mediaeval period and later developed in the Victorian period.

“We have obtained an archaeological licence and appointed an archaeologist to ensure the skeletons are reburied in line with national guidelines.”

Due to the discovery, the council warns that the roadworks could be delayed up to four weeks. However, it is looking at options to reduce the delay in later phases of the project.
