Independent family-run restaurant planned for Middlesbrough

The venture remains unnamed for now, but planning documents reveal proposals to revamp a vacant ground-floor space as part of a wider redevelopment in Middlesbrough.

The restaurant would be located in Tollesby, specifically in a ground-floor unit within the Newbridge Court redevelopment site, which is home to a One Stop shop and Barber House, just off Rievaulx Drive.

A change of use application currently sits with Middlesbrough Council officers who would need to approve the transition for the vacant retail unit.

In practical terms, there would be no shop loss, as according to the application form, the retail unit has never been occupied, sitting empty since it was constructed.

The planning agent was not able to disclose the name of the new restaurant, but did confirm that it would be a local independent establishment, as opposed to a chain.

It is hoped that the endeavour will create three full time and four part time jobs, with proposed hours of opening from 4pm to 10.30pm, except for Saturdays where the restaurant would stay open to the later time of 11.30pm.

The only external change of note would be the installation of an extraction flue to the rear of the property. Inside the building, there would be “minor” alterations to facilitate kitchen and dining layout, according to papers submitted to the council.

In terms of national policy, papers argue that the proposal is positive as it will support economic growth and small businesses, while also promoting the vitality and viability of a local centre, and encouraging the reuse of vacant buildings.

When it comes to policies relating specifically to Middlesbrough, the supporting statement highlights how the Local Plan seeks to both diversify retail and leisure uses within centres while also supporting new business development.
