IEA is ready to further tap global oil reserves if needed, chief says
The head of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, said on Monday he hopes another oil stockpile release is not needed but “we stand ready to act” if the energy shock resulting from the war with Iran requires it.
The 32-member IEA agreed last month to release 400 million barrels of oil from reserves, the largest coordinated release ever, in a bid to calm oil markets.
The US, the world’s largest oil and gas producer, agreed to release 172 million barrels from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

“I hope, very much hope, we don’t need to do it but if it is needed we are ready to act,” Birol said. Birol reiterated at an Atlantic Council event that the war has resulted in the worst global energy disruption ever and said that more than 80 oil and gas facilities including production, terminals and refineries across the Middle East have been damaged by war with Iran.
Benchmark oil prices are trading near $100 a barrel. Due to the vast extent of the production shut-ins and closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the oil releases are “not a solution,” Birol said, “it’s just reducing the pain.”

Trump doubles down on criticism of Pope
Donald Trump said on Monday that Pope Leo XIV was wrong on issues of law and order, continuing his criticism with the pontiff over crime, policing and views on US war with Iran.
He earlier branded Pope Leo XIV as “weak” on crime and “terrible” on foreign policy, in a late-night Truth Social blitz which also saw him uploading an AI-generated image of himself dressed as Jesus, which has now been deleted.

Trump deletes post depicting him as Jesus Christ
A picture depicting Donald Trump as Jesus Christ has been deleted from the president’s Truth Social account after a wave of backlash from religious right figures accusing him of blasphemy.
The image, posted to his account after he delivered a screed against Pope Leo XIV, depicts the president dressed in a white robe with a glowing hand on the forehead of a man in a hospital bed.

Trump: ‘We can’t let a country blackmail or extort the world’
The US president is holding a press conference at the moment.

He says that Iran wants to make a deal and that he will not come to any agreement that allows Tehran to have a nuclear weapon.
“[The sticking point] was over nuclear, […]Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.
“And we agreed to a lot of things but they didn’t agree to that. And I think they will agree to it, I’m almost sure of it. In fact I am sure of it, if they don’t agree there’s no deal, there will never be a deal.
“Iran will not have a nuclear weapon. And we’ll get the dust back. We’ll get it back either way; we’ll get it back from them, or we’ll take it.”

He adds that he believes Iran is “really blackmailing the world”.
“Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump tells reporters at the White House. “We can’t let a country blackmail or extort the world.”
President Donald Trump took in-person delivery of his McDonald’s lunch order at the White House Monday — and that odd moment marked the most normal thing in Trumpworld the last 72 hours.
While holding his bags of cheeseburgers, fries and whatever else, Trump kept the delivery driver at his side while she weighed in on his no-tax-on-tips measure and he addressed reporters on a wide range of issues including the Iran war. The truly bizarre stunt played out as the U.S. began a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the president was embroiled in a simmering controversy over his posting an AI image of himself as Jesus Christ on Truth Social.
The publicly unscheduled but clearly staged press event played out just after noon as the press pool was ushered to the front door of the Oval Office to watch the president of the United States grin and receive two large bags of McDonalds from a delivery driver who then turned to reporters and praised the GOP’s move to end taxes on tipped wages in 2025.
“McDonalds!” the red-clad woman said in a tone clearly only audible to reporters outside the Oval as she rapped quickly on the door. Trump, a second later, opens the door: “Oh, nice to see you!”

“Nice to meet you,” the woman replied. The two began a banter about how the “No Tax On Tips” policy Trump championed during the 2024 election was now helping her as part of the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” passed into law last year.
(Reuters)
In a moment of self awareness, Trump quipped to Simmons sarcastically: “This doesn’t look staged.”
Trump then addressed reporters and began a full press conference, the president standing side-by-side with the delivery woman in her red DoorDash polo shirt, and issued his newest threats against Iran and even spoke about his conflict with the Pope. His first question came from a reporter who asked about an AI-generated image the president posted and then deleted which depicted him as Jesus Christ.
“I thought it was me as a doctor,” Trump claimed of the image that portrayed him robed, holding his hand to a man’s forehead and healing him with a glowing white light. “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better. And I do make people better.” The president did not explain why he deleted the image, which drew criticism from some conservatives and Christians.
Simmons stood awkwardly by Trump’s side as he took a range of questions from reporters (Reuters)
He also responded to a question about the current state of U.S.-Iran negotiations, and confirmed once again that the “sticking point” in the talks centered around Iran’s future nuclear ambitions. Trump had previously insisted that Iran had agreed to give up plans of developing nuclear weapons in the future as he insisted that his war with the country was already won, but over the weekend changed his story to admit that Tehran’s refusal to agree to U.S. demands regarding its nuclear program was the reason for the conflict continuing.
“[The sticking point] was over nuclear, yeah […] Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told reporters. “And we agreed to a lot of things but they didn’t agree to that. And I think they will agree to it, I’m almost sure of it. In fact I am sure of it, if they don’t agree there’s no deal, there will never be a deal. Iran will not have a nuclear weapon. And we’ll get the dust back. We’ll get it back either way; we’ll get it back from them, or we’ll take it.”
Trump’s reference to “the dust” refers to Iran’s remaining supply of enriched uranium, much or all of which is believed to be buried under rock and earth as a result of damaging U.S. strikes at Isfahan, Natanz and Fordow, three sites tied to the Iranian nuclear program hit by U.S. strikes last summer. Among the U.S.’s demands include the transfer of any remaining material to American hands.
Simmons stood awkwardly by Trump’s side as he took a range of questions from reporters (Getty)
In one more embarrassing moment, as the woman identified as “Sharon” stood beside him, Trump turned from attacking Democrats to the camera and posed a question to the DoorDash driver who was still awkwardly standing there regarding her views on “men in women’s sports”, the president and Republicans’ shorthand for the right of transgender girls and women to participate in sporting leagues corresponding to their preferred gender.
She sheepishly replied: “I really don’t have an opinion on that. No, no, I’m here on no tax on tips,” as the president pressed her.
The Independent reached out to the White House for more details about the event and the president’s order.
White House spokesman Steven Cheung later posted a photo of a half-eaten burger he declared he’d “had to dig in” to.
Simmons is no stranger to Washington and previously testified before the House Ways and Means Committee for a hearing aimed at touting the “No Tax On Tips” legislation included as part of the GOP’s budget reconciliation package last year. The populist provision was part of a reconciliation package that included a massive surge of funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and also extended the 2017 Republican tax cuts passed under the president’s first term.
“This moment represents something bigger than a single delivery. It’s about the millions of Dashers across the country who are now able to keep more of what they earn when filing their taxes this year. With No Tax on Tips, Dashers across the U.S. saved hundreds of millions of dollars last year. DoorDash is proud to advocate on behalf of Dashers like Sharon and push for policies like No Tax on Tips because they deliver real impact to so many hardworking people and their families,” DoorDash said in a statement regarding Monday’s event.
According to information provided to USA Today by DoorDash, Simmons has completed nearly 12,000 deliveries on the DoorDash platform, according to her congressional testimony in July of last year.
“In early 2025, my husband was diagnosed with cancer and the toll that radiation & chemotherapy took on him forced him to reduce his hours at his job. Because DoorDash provides me with a truly flexible work schedule, I was able to drive him to and from his treatments. During that time, every extra dollar I earned mattered more than ever,” she told Congress last year.

Anna Kepner was found dead in her room on the Carnival Cruise ship (Picture: TikTok)
A teenager has been charged with murder and aggravated sexual abuse over the killing of his stepsister, found hidden under a bed on a family cruise.
Anna Kepner, 18, had been travelling on the Carnival Horizon ship in November with her family.
Before the ship was scheduled to return to Florida, her body was found stuffed under a bed in a room she was sharing with two other teens, including the younger stepbrother.
Timothy Hudson, 16, was initially charged as a juvenile but the case was sealed until US District Judge Beth Bloom said that he would be prosecuted as an adult.
Chris Kepner, Anna Kepner’s father and Hudson’s stepfather, told NBC News that ‘justice needs to be served.’
‘That is where the family stands,’ he continued, noting that Hudson should be in custody.
He previously said that the loss of his daughter is ‘a pain that will never fully heal’ and that his family believes in ‘accountability and in the importance of justice being carried out.’
‘Our daughter’s life matters, and we will continue to speak out to honour her, to seek accountability, and to ensure that her case is not forgotten,’ Mr Kepner said, adding that he was advised ‘to remain quiet’ about the case.

The cause of Kepner’s November 6 death was determined to be mechanical asphyxia, which is when an object or physical force stops someone from breathing.
Kepner was a high school cheerleader at Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida, some 40 miles east of Orlando.
Hudson was seen at the Miami courthouse in February, wearing a ball cap and a hoodie pulled tightly around his face.
But his status at that time was not fully known because his age barred public disclosures by his lawyers, the government or the court.
Hudson was ordered to wear an electronic tether while living with an uncle.
The order was later changed to allow him to temporarily work with his father at a landscaping business, court records show.
Experts believe the case is in federal court, and not a state court where teens are commonly prosecuted, because Kepner died in international waters.
In an obituary, Anna was remembered as a ‘bubbly high’ school senior who dreamed of continuing cheerleading at the University of Georgia.

Tributes said Ms Kepner was an outgoing and reliable teenager who ‘loved her siblings deeply.’
At her memorial service in November, family members encouraged people to wear bright colours instead of the traditional black ‘in honour of Anna’s bright and beautiful soul.’
Reports of planned protests on roads across Northern Ireland have been circulating on social media
Motorists are being warned of the possibility of widespread disruption on Northern Irish roads on Tuesday due to “planned fuel protests”.
Some city centre offices are asking staff to work from home today
Reports of the protests have been circulating on social media and have been calling on members of the farming community and HGV drivers to block certain roads in NI due to rising costs.
The protests are reported to start at 2pm on Tuesday, April 14.
They will reportedly take place on Westlink, Belfast, M1 at Sprucefield, Nutts Corner, Sandyknowes Roundabout, Larne Harbour, Ballygawley Roundabout, Toome Bridge and Omagh town centre.
The alleged aim of the protests is to highlight concerns regarding rising costs in certain sectors, particularly around fuel and fertisiler.
The police have said they are aware of the reports of the protests with a spokesperson saying: “Police are maintaining an ongoing assessment in relation to social media posts calling for planned protests across Northern Ireland. “A policing response has been prepared, if needed, to ensure public safety and to help minimise any potential disruption to the wider community.”
Health trusts have warned patients to give themselves additional time to travel to appointments incase there are delays on the roads.
The Ulster Farmers’ Union has said it has had no involvement in the organisation of the protests and its chair has called on members not to support them.
The reports of protests come in the wake of protests in the Republic of Ireland which saw roads and motorways blocked.
The Department of Health has said it would ask protestors to be mindful of health sites and vehicles and that health and social care services will run as normal until circumstances dictate otherwise when a revision of planning will take place by providers.
Charles Hurst has told customers Service departments will open at 7am and showrooms remain open. Service collections and deliveries will run as normal in the morning, with any afternoon appointments being rearranged directly with customers.
Fonacab issued a statement on Monday evening urging people to be aware of potential disruption to traffic, to leave more time for travel, to book in advance with prebooked journeys getting priority.
Several schools have indicated they may close on Tuesday or close earlier if protests cause widespread traffic issues. Schools closing so far are St Ciaran’s College in Ballycawley Co Tyrone and St Gerard’s Special School in Belfast which will close early.
Head-to-head: Can Leeds get finally get one over on their rivals?
Manchester United have not lost to their arch-rivals Leeds since they made their first return to the Premier League in 16 years back in 2020, going unbeaten across seven meetings.
However, United’s record in that time frame has been far from perfect, winning four and drawing three. Their last contest was the 1-1 draw played out at Elland Road in January, with Matheus Cunha’s strike cancelling out Brenden Aaronson’s opener.
Leeds also held United to a draw on their last trip to Old Trafford back in Feburary 2023, though it could’ve been better as they squandered a two-goal lead, having gone in front in the very first minute through Wilfried Gnonto.
They lived to regret that game, with Leeds having not claimed victory against United since stunningly knocking them out of the FA Cup in the third round in 2010, Jermaine Beckford’s goal proving the difference.
And in the league, their wait for a win goes back to 2002, when Harry Kewell – a man whose reputation of course turned toxic due to his later Galatasaray affiliation – got the decisive goal.
Will this be the night they finally get one over on United?

Harry Maguire wants to make next season special after extending his Man Utd stay
Harry Maguire believes Manchester United are “in a forward curve” and said he wants to be part of a special campaign next season after signing a new deal to stay at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
“It’s amazing,” Maguire said on the club website. “Obviously, it’s my seventh year. To be at this club, to play for this club for one game is really special. So, to be here seven years – it’s going to be eight – I’m really looking forward to it.
“A big, strong end to the season is the focus now, to put us in a strong position going into next year, and then we’ve got to make next year a lot better and a lot more positive and a lot more special. I’m really looking forward to it.

“I feel like we’re in a good place at the moment. I believe we’re in a forward curve with the club, and I want to be part of that.
“I want to leave the club in a good place, when I do leave the club, and that’s the most important thing. It’s not about me, it’s not about individuals. It’s about the team and the club, and wanting to leave the club in a good place.
“I feel like next season could be a special year, if we carry on working hard, if we recruit well in the summer. It’s a big summer ahead, but like I said, focus on this year to make sure we’re in a good position for next year and then make next year a special year.”

Michael Carrick knows the value of Champions League in helping secure players
With Harry Maguire signing an extension in recent days, Mainoo could soon follow suit and Carrick is optimistic that discussions are heading in the right direction.
“We’d like to think so and it’s getting closer, so we’re positive with that,” he said.
“We’re calm with it, but we’re positive with it and time will tell how it goes. At the moment, we are in a good place.”
He added: “I think the Champions League just brings so many positive things. It’s where we want to be, there’s no getting away from that.

“That has ramifications for so many different things over…players staying, if it is that; if it’s players coming in, it’s financially (important to) all sorts of different things. It’s what we want to be and we need to try and get used to being in there more often.”

Daniel Farke backs Ao Tanaka to shine at Leeds
Daniel Farke insists Japan midfielder Ao Tanaka is happy at Leeds and will get further chances to prove he is a top Premier League player.
“Lately there have been really good performances, so based on that I don’t see anything. I know that he loves to play for this club and is happy with us.
“I’m very happy with his development because Ao is not the youngest anymore and for him it’s his first season in a top flight.
“He has said publicly he’s not yet good enough for this level, but we’ve always believed in Ao. He produced a really good performance (at West Ham) and proved against a Premier League side that he can play at the top level.

“For Ao there is no limit because he’s a top player. He’s done this in recent weeks and for that there will be more chances for him in the coming weeks to shine. If he produces performances like he did at West Ham then we are all happy.”

A warm-up for the warm-up?
There are stakes at both ends of the table in tonight’s clash between these arch-rivals – but in a few months’ time, these two will meet again on a much more unique, and less pressurised, occasion.
United’s pre-season plans begun to take shape last week after confirming their first friendly as a clash in Dublin against tonight’s opposition, Leeds.
The Premier League rivals will meet at the 82,000-capacity Croke Park stadium on 12 August and will be one of six matches being planned for United in Europe during the summer.
It will be the first football match staged at the venue – which is the traditional home of Gaelic sports – since the Republic of Ireland faced France there in 2009’s World Cup play-off; the night of Thierry Henry’s infamous handball that proved decisive in denying Ireland a place at the tournament finals.

Leeds get triple injury boosts as trio of doubts start

The end of the two child benefit cap has officially come into force, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer declaring it proof his Government is “on the side of the British people”.
The policy, first introduced in 2017, had limited support through universal credit and child tax credit to the first two children in most households. Now, that restriction has been lifted, triggering the first wave of payments to families who were previously excluded.
Ministers say the change could lift around 450,000 children out of poverty, with many households already beginning to feel the impact.
Starmer said: “No matter the global uncertainty, my Government will always be on the side of the British people in bearing down on the cost of living.”
He added: “I will never lose sight of how restless people are for change, and I am proud that today we are lifting nearly half a million children out of poverty, boosting support for pensioners, and delivering the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation.”
The move was confirmed earlier this year by Chancellor Rachel Reeves, following months of pressure to scrap the cap.
As the first payments begin to reach bank accounts, the Prime Minister also pointed to wider pressures facing households, including global instability.
“I know families across the country are concerned about the conflict in Iran and what it means for the cost of living,” he said.
“We are working closely with international partners to push for a de-escalation in the Middle East and the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
“This is the most effective way to ease the pressure on the cost of living.”
He added: “I am clear that our response to the current global situation will define us for a generation, which is why we are taking the right long-term decisions now to ensure we emerge from this as a stronger, more secure nation.”
But not everyone is convinced the changes go far enough.
Amnesty International said more sweeping reforms are needed to tackle poverty, warning many families will still struggle.
Jen Clark, from the organisation, said: “However welcome the lifting of the two-child limit is, it fails to go far enough to help the vast majority of children living in poverty in the UK.”
“The Government urgently needs to make changes to the social security system to make it fairer, particularly given the growing cost-of-living crisis.”
She added: “For decades, these policies have kept those most in need in poverty, forcing parents to choose between putting food on the table and turning the heating on.”
Meanwhile, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticised the move, arguing it shifts the balance too far.
She said: “While working people struggle with rising fuel costs and food prices, Keir Starmer is giving another handout to those on benefits.”
“The Conservatives believe in fairness and that those on welfare should have to make the same choices about their family as those who aren’t.”
Alongside the change, a raft of new measures has also come into force, including improved workers’ rights, updates to sick pay, and a rise in the state pension.
Recommended reading:
Writing about the changes, Starmer described the moment as “one of the proudest” for his Government.
“Because it will lift nearly half a million children out of poverty,” he said. “It means fuller cupboards, less anxiety at the end of the month, and a fairer start in life for children who had no say in the circumstances they were born into.

“And it tells you something fundamental about this Government – when faced with a choice, we act.”
A concerned mum spoke of her fear after she realised her son may have swallowed the contents of a toy recalled due to asbestos concerns.
Charli Aitken, said her “heart dropped” when she found out the Let’s Dig Out Dinosaur Eggs toy that her three-year-old son Rudi swallowed in February may have contained asbestos.
At first, Ms Smyth, from Lincoln, had been told by retailer Smyths Toys that the ‘dinosaur sand’ in the product was “not considered dangerous” and made of plaster of Paris.
But on April 1, the product was among a number recalled by Smyths as the sand found in the set “may be contaminated with a quantity of asbestos”.
The recall, listed via the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), “presents a risk to health as the sand-like material inside the toy may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos”.
The seven products recalled by Smyths at the beginning of April
Smyths
Asbestos is banned in the UK and poses a risk even at low levels of exposure.
Ms Airoen said she had turned around to look at Rudi when she noticed he had taken a “big spoonful of this dinosaur sand”.
She told the BBC: “I turned around and Rudi had taken a big spoonful of this dinosaur sand. He looked at me and smiled and his mouth was full of plaster.
“I phoned NHS 111 who put me on to the poison team. They said the risk was in case there was anything toxic in the product.”
She said she contacted Smyths and the company told her the contents of the toy were non-toxic.
Six weeks later, she received an email that contained a product recall notice.
Ms Aitken said the advice she had received meant she did not seek medical treatment for Rudi and she was left feeling “confused” about why she had not been contacted directly by Smyths. She said she raised her concerns 16 times before she received a response.
Smyths told the BBC: “The European Commission & OPSS (Office for Product Safety and Standards UK) are undertaking a review of these (sand toy) products.
“We trust their scientific expertise and independence and await their findings and guidance.
“Smyths Toys have tested the product 166403 – Lets Dig Out Dinosaur Figures Eggs 10 Pack Set and this has shown trace levels of asbestos.
“Although the health risk is low, Smyths Toys Superstores is recalling these products as a precaution.”
Asbestos causes mesothelioma, a kind of cancer that usually starts in the layers of tissue that cover the lungs.
It is a “general name given to several naturally occurring fibrous minerals that have crystallised to form fibres” the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said in its advice on the product.
It is resistant to fire, heat, and does not dissolve in water, meaning it was commonly used in a range of products, including building insulation, cement for roofing sheets, car brakes and floor tiles.
People can be exposed to asbestos naturally in the environment because of the “natural weathering “ of ores containing asbestos, or the breaking down of asbestos-containing products.
If fibres are intact, they pose little risk to humans, but damage can cause fibres to be released.
The most likely way a person is exposed to asbestos is “by breathing in fibres that are suspended in air”, the UKHSA said.
“People also may swallow small amounts of the fibres if the asbestos enters the soil or drinking water,” the health body added. “Although asbestos does not dissolve, fibres may enter water after being eroded from natural sources, from asbestos-cement or from asbestos-containing filters.”
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said there is “no consistent evidence” that ingested asbestos is hazardous to health, according to the UKHSA.
Which products have been recalled?
In an initial recall on April 1, Smyths recalled the seven products, listed with product codes, and they are as follows:

Dino Dig Sensory Bin – 248772
Dig In Kit GOLD – 231105
Let’s Dig Out Dinosaur Eggs (10pc) – 166403
Gem Dig Kit (12 Gem Pack) – 187539
Dig It Up Pirates 13 Treasure Set – 223521
Dig In Treasure Dig and Discover Play Gold Treasure Chest – 242645
Gem Dig Kit 8 Pack – 187538
Those who have purchased any of the above products are advised to stop using them immediately.
If the sand is still in its packaging, then people are advised to “place in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it clearly and store in a secure location out of the reach of children”, the OPSS said.
The sand should be kept away from children.
If the sand has been used, the sites where it was used must be cleaned. This can be done with wet cloths to “avoid generating dust” while wearing gloves and a mask. The sand should be double-bagged, along with the gloves, mask, and clothes.
Products can be returned to Smyths for a full refund.

Three stretchy toys were later recalled over asbestos concerns.
The HGL Stretchy Sand Monster Truck, Scrunchems Stretchies Sleepy Dino Toy and HGL Stretchy Sand Pig were recalled by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS).
All three toys are said to originate from China and are distributed by One For Fun Limited.
One for Fun chief executive David Mordecai said tests revealed three products contained “contained trace contamination”.

He said: “We take product safety extremely seriously. As a result, we have discontinued the use of sand as a filler in all current and future products.
“We remain committed to the highest safety standards and will continue to monitor and review our materials and processes accordingly.”
A judge said the siblings had ‘cynically and cruelly’ targeted a vulnerable woman in her 70s
19:19, 13 Apr 2026

A pair of “parasite” brothers conned a vulnerable woman into withdrawing thousands of pounds from her savings account, a court has heard.
Danny and Jamie Price persuaded the pensioner that she owed them money for roofing work before driving her to her building society to get the cash. However the pair were thwarted by bank staff who became concerned at what was going on and called the police.
Swansea Crown Court heard Jamie Price is a “persistent predator” of elderly and vulnerable people and has a string of convictions for frauds and distraction-type burglaries against people in the 70s and 80s while his younger brother Danny was learning his sibling’s “vile trade”.
Brian Simpson, prosecuting, told the court that on December 11 last year Danny Price knocked on the door of the Swansea home of a woman in her 70s and introduced himself as “Andrew” and told her she owed £6,000 for VAT for work done on her roof.
The court heard the woman had in fact previously had roofing work done on her property by builders but that the bill for the job had been settled in full.
The prosecutor said the woman, who had “significant memory loss issues which would have been obvious to anyone who spoke to her”, told the defendant that she did not have the money but he said he would come back the following day.
The court heard the Price brothers returned to the victim’s house on December 12 and while Jamie Price stayed in their car his younger sibling Danny, who was wearing a hi-vis jacket and again calling himself “Andrew” and claiming to be from a roofing firm, called on the pensioner.

The brothers then drove the woman to the Principality building society in Swansea city centre and dropped her off while they parked the car and went to a bookmakers.
The prosecutor said the complainant explained to staff at the Principality why she wanted to withdraw £6,000 in cash but the staff became concerned at what they were hearing and called the police.
The court heard police launched a manhunt and identified Jamie Price from CCTV footage in the city centre while Danny Price was identified as the registered keeper of the car they had used to drive their victim to town.
Jamie Price was located and arrested on January 6 and Danny Price was arrested six days later when he walked into a police station.

Danny Price, aged 19, of Brown Avenue, Llanelli, and 27-year-old Jamie Price, formerly of Second Avenue, Clase, Morriston, but now of no fixed abode, had both previously pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation when they appeared in the dock for sentencing.
Danny Price has no previous convictions. Jamie Price has previous convictions for shoplifting assault, sexual assault, fraud by false representation, and burglary.
The fraud cases saw him targeting people in their 70s and 80s asking for cash for non-existent gardening and maintenance work. When one of his victims, a man in his 70s living in Gorseinon, refused to pay, the defendant threatened that he tell the police the pensioner was viewing pornography.
The burglaries saw Price targeting elderly and vulnerable people in Morriston in a series of “distraction burglaries” during which he pretended to be a gardener or to be concerned about a victim’s dog which he said had escaped from her garden. He was jailed for three and a half years for the burglaries in 2019 with a judge telling him it was hard to think of a more “despicable” way of making money than stealing from vulnerable men and women in their 70s and 80s.

Giles Hayes, for Danny Price, said his client was from a Traveller background who had left school at the age of 14 and had always worked in the family landscaping business. He said the teenager “has no desire to follow his brother’s path”.
Judge Paul Thomas KC said the Price brothers “cynically and cruelly” tried to take money from a lady with obvious vulnerabilities and had shown their victim “no mercy” as they set about “ruthlessly taking advantage of her”. He said it was a mystery to him how the brothers could sleep at night.
The judge praised the actions of Principality staff in identifying the brothers as “parasites” and in thwarting their fraud.
Judge Thomas described Jamie Price as a “persistent predator of vulnerable people” and said it seemed to him that Danny Price had thought he would like to learn his sibling’s “vile trade”.

He said while Danny Price had been “all too willing” to take part in the scam he was satisfied the young brother was “under the malign influence” of Jamie Price at the time.
With a discount for his guilty plea Danny Price was sentenced to two years in prison suspended for two years and was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and to complete a rehabilitation course. Judge Thomas said while he was prepared to suspend the sentence he was doing so “not without some misgivings”.
Jamie Price had previously been sentenced to 56 months in prison for a series offences one of which was the fraud jointly carried out with his sibling.

“I would rather give birth to five kids at the same time than go through with the pain again”
A Northern Ireland woman claims weight loss injections turned her tongue jet black – and left her needing her gallbladder removed.

Sarah-Jayne Crawford, 32, started taking Wegovy in August 2024 after reaching 19 stone 9 lbs, a size 20. The mum-of-one was hoping to shed a few pounds before her wedding day in November, 2025 and paid £199 through an online pharmacy for a month’s supply of the jabs with a 0.25mg dosage.
But 12 weeks – and another £350 later – after increasing to 1 mg, things took a worrying turn when Sarah began suffering “sharp pains” in her upper stomach along with frequent bouts of vomiting, before waking up one morning in December to find her tongue had turned jet black.
The strange symptom left her unable to eat spicy foods – including peppers and onions – alongside severe mouth pain and foul “egg-smelling” sulphur burps.
Fearing the worst, she took herself to A&E at Antrim Area Hospital, where CT and MRI scans revealed “multiple” gallstones blocking her bile duct, as well diverticulitis – an inflammation of irregular bulging pouches in the wall of the large intestine – and she stopped taking the jabs completely.
In February 2025, she underwent a cholecystectomy to remove the organ entirely – after the gall stones were discovered
Now almost recovered and off the jabs, Sarah – who weighs 18st 8lbs – is still baffled by the bizarre black tongue symptom, and is speaking out to warn others about the potential risks of weight-loss injections.
Sarah, a personal secretary for the NHS, from Antrim, Northern Ireland, said: “Wegovy was my last resort. I know a lot of people who are on the jabs and it worked like a dream for them.

“I had been battling my weight for what felt like forever and I was dying to slim before my wedding – but dieting, exercising and starving myself never worked.
“Before, I had heard stories about the dangers and my friend even joked about gallstones. But when the pain left me unable to leave my bed I knew something was up.
“The black tongue seemed like a cherry on top and a warning of what was to come. Never did I think this would happen to me.”
Sarah had “always struggled” with weight her entire life.

But it wasn’t until she was proposed to by her partner, Curtis, 30, a mechanic in September 2022 that it prompted her to drop a few sizes.
Knowing “traditional methods never worked” for her, Sarah paid £199 through an online pharmacy for two-months supply of Wegovy at 0.25mg dosage.
“At the start, everything seemed fine,” she said.
“My appetite slowly disappeared and I felt great for the wedding. But I wasn’t noticing a huge amount of change.”
Over the following weeks, Sarah paid a further £350 on Wegovy and eventually upped her dose to 1mg. But after 12 weeks on the jabs, she started experiencing “episodes of intense pain” in her upper stomach and “bouts of vomiting.”
The stinging had quickly progressed to an “excruciating” trapped wind sensation and she was left bed bound.
And within a 24-hour period, the mum was shocked to discover that her tongue had turned black – and she was left unable to eat spicy foods.

“It all happened so quickly,” Sarah said.
“It went from really sharp pains that were enough to leave me bed bound. To having sulphur burps, that smelt of egg, and a black tongue. It was terrible.
“I have a child, so it was very difficult to take time off work. But the pain was so unbearable I couldn’t walk.
“I would rather give birth to five kids at the same time than go through with the pain again.”

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, semaglutide (the active agent in Wegovy which boosts glucose control and weight loss) is known to cause dry mouth, halitosis (bad breath) and sulphur-smelling burps from slowed digestion – and can reportedly contribute to a black-coated tongue.
Concerned, Sarah immediately stopped taking the jabs and went to A&E at Antrim Area Hospital where an emergency MRI and CT scan revealed she had multiple gallstones blocking her bile duct – leaving her at risk of pancreatitis.
She was booked in for a total cholecystectomy – a procedure to remove the gallbladder – on February 10, 2025, and her surgeon encouraged her to stay off Wegovy so she could go under the anaesthetic.
“By this point, I was 18 stone and had hardly lost any weight,” she said.

“The procedure was about an hour and I cracked on with the recovery. I’m slowly transitioning back to normal and eating more food now – but I’m still far from normal.”
Over a year later, Sarah has married and now weighs 18 stone 8lbs. Since coming off the jabs back in December 2024 her tongue has regained its colour.
She credits the majority of her weight loss to being ill rather than the jabs themselves – and is still unsure how the Wegovy caused her tongue to turn black as no doctors could explain.

“I did my research and thought I’d be OK,” she said.
“But it was the complete opposite. It’s not worth it. Weight loss jabs are a temporary fix.
“I’m proof that anything can happen once you inject yourself and I have now changed my mindset. Please do you research before you commit – I can’t stress enough how much women are putting themselves at risk.”
A spokesperson from Novo Nordisk, a Wegovy manufacturer, said: “Patient safety is of the utmost importance to us at Novo Nordisk.

“To ensure healthcare professionals have a detailed understanding of our medicine’s safety profile, the adverse reactions we have observed in clinical trials are detailed in our medicine’s Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC).
“In the registrational trials for this medicine, cholelithiasis (acute gallstone disease) was reported in 1.6% of patients and led to cholecystitis in 0.6% of people living with obesity treated with semaglutide 2.4 mg.
“For this reason, acute gallstone disease (cholelithiasis) is listed as a “common” potential adverse reaction for Wegovy (semaglutide injection) in the product’s UK SmPC and should be considered when patients are being evaluated for this medicine.
“As part of this work we also monitor reports of adverse drug reactions through routine pharmacovigilance. If you know of someone who might be experiencing side effects from any medicine, we would advise you to report it to your healthcare provider, and via the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.”
A group of men travelled from Weston-super-Mare to Ferndale and targeted the house over a drug debt
Four men jailed after arson attack
Shocking video has emerged showing the moment a devastating blaze ripped through a home in Ferndale after men poured petrol through a pensioner’s letterbox and window in the middle of the night.
Grandmother Carol Ford’s home was ruined after it was targeted in an arson attack over an unpaid drug debt.
In the video released by South Wales Police huge flames can be seen coming out of windows at the front of the property and a car parked opposite the home.
Officers can be heard knocking on doors in Protheroe Street in Ferndale, Rhondda Cynon Taf, to evacuate the street as they spoke about how it was going to be a “large evacuation process” and asked who lived in the neighbouring houses.

On Friday, April 10, four men were sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court over the attack which completed destroyed Ms Ford’s home of more than 60 years, gutted three cars, and caused considerable damage to the neighbouring homes. Alfie Wheeler, 19, Auryn Gustur, 19, Connor Pitt, 24, Lewis Manito, 33, all travelled from Weston-super-Mare to the street and targeted the house over a £137,000 drug debt Ms Ford’s grandsons Matthew and Gavin Ford owed.
Pitt, Gustur, and Wheeler were being sentenced after having pleaded guilty to arson with intent to endanger life while Manito pleaded guilty to arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered and perverting the course of justice by disposing of the vehicle he drove.
On July 27, 2025, the four men travelled from the seaside town in two vehicles. Manito drove Pitt while Gustur and Wheeler were driven by Wheeler’s partner Storm Truman. The court heard how she was being kept in the dark about the reason for the journey and was acquitted following a trial of a charge of arson being reckless as to whether life was endangered.
The men met up and Pitt left Manito’s vehicle with a petrol can before the three were driven to the property by Truman while Manito stayed in the area for support before disposing of his van.
In the early hours of July 28 the balaclava-clad men poured one petrol canister through the letterbox and a second through a window they had smashed.

Bodyworn footage from the incident showed police officers arriving at the scene at around 1.30am and rapidly evacuating nearby properties.
Firefighters can then be seen tackling the fire which filled the entire residential street with thick black smoke.
During the sentencing the court heard how Ms Ford luckily managed to flee her home just in time and how the fire service had to battle hard to save neighbouring properties.
In the 82-year-old pensioner’s victim impact statement the court heard how her only possession which survived the fire was her set of false teeth and she said money could never replace the memories she had lost through the devastating blaze.
Judge Paul Hobson told the defendants: “Your actions devastated the street and the people who lived there.”
The police footage also showed the four men being pulled over by police and arrested.
Pitt, of Canterbury Close in Weston-super-Mare, was handed an overall sentence of 18 years comprising 13 years in prison and an additional five-year licence period. Gustur, of Russell Avenue in Weston-super-Mare, was sentenced to 15 and a half years overall made up of a 10-and-a-half-year custodial term and five years on licence.
