The Italian who guided the Foxes back to the Premier League in his only season in charge was sacked by Chelsea on New Year ’s Day after a turbulent 18 month spell at Stamford Bridge.

Leicester who axed Marti Cifuentes have installed Andy King as their interim manager but would like Maresca to take over on a short term contract until the end of the season.

They know the 45-year-old is highly respected and has been linked with the Tottenham job and has influential admirers at Manchester City if Pep Guardiola decides to bring his trophy winning reign to an end.

That’s why Leicester aren’t looking beyond summer for their successful boss who did the business in season 2023-24, although not always being on side with the Foxes fans despite his success and being named Championship ‘Manager of the Month’ on four occasions.

Leicester are hoping for a positive response from Maresca having not ruled themselves out of a late challenge for a promotion play off spot.

A lucrative incentive based package has been placed before the Italian in the knowledge that he wouldn’t commit beyond the summer with clubs in Italy and this country eyeing up the much admired coach.

King took charge of the Foxes for the first time on Saturday, but was unable to get an immediate bounce with his side losing at home to Charlton.
