London Mayor Sadiq Khan handed a peerage by Keir Starmer alongside 15 other Labour figures… just days before the PM leaves No10

Sadiq Khan is entering the House of Lords in the latest batch of honours nominated by Keir Starmer

Sadiq Khan has been handed a peerage alongside 15 other Labour figures, in one of Keir Starmer‘s final acts as PM.

The London Mayor is entering the House of Lords in the latest batch of honours nominated by Sir Keir.

Broadcaster June Sarpong and former Unison general secretary Christina McAnea are also on the list.

In a potentially controversial move, Sir Sadiq will not give up his role as mayor – although it is understood he would not accept a ministerial role under incoming PM Andy Burnham

Sir Sadiq and the 25 other new peers will be entitled to £390 tax free for every day they attend a sitting in the Lords. Aides did not immediately say whether the mayor – who already has a £170,000 salary – would take the payment or donate it to charity.

It is also unclear what Mr Burnham, who is set to take over in No10 on Monday, thinks of the appointments.

He has long argued for reform of the Upper chamber, insisting last month that ‘half of our national legislature being unelected’ was ‘quite scandalous’ and that he would not ‘rule out quite an early change’.

The Tories have nominated three new peers, including former army chief General Patrick Sanders and Carphone Warehouse founder David Ross.

The Lib Dems have been granted five, but there were no spots for Reform.

Former Appeal Court judge Sir Brian Leveson, author of the Leveson Report into media standards, becomes a crossbench peer.

The list is separate to any resignation honours that Sir Keir might present.

He has pointedly refused to rule out a set of farewell nominations, despite promising while in Opposition that he would never do one.

A spokesman for Sir Sadiq said: ‘London gave Sadiq the opportunities to go from a council estate to being Mayor of London, and his focus will continue to be ensuring that all Londoners get the same shot at reaching their full potential that London gave him and his family.

‘Serving as mayor of the greatest city in the world continues to be the privilege of Sadiq’s life.

‘He is excited about what more can be delivered in the years ahead and he will devote his time and energy to standing up for our city and building a fairer, safer and greener London for everyone.’

Allies insisted Sir Sadiq will ‘continue to devote the same time and energy as Mayor building a fairer, safer and greener city for every Londoner’.

He has yet to decide whether to stand for a fourth term in the job.

A Government source said: ‘Sadiq has been a brilliant Mayor who has transformed London for the better, so this is thoroughly deserved.

‘He has cut violent crime to record lows, cleaned up the capital’s air, delivered the Elizabeth Line, and got London building council homes again.’

Mr Burnham, a former Greater Manchester Mayor, has previously backed turning the chamber into an elected senate of regions and nations, and is reportedly considering plans to appoint metro mayors to the red benches as a first step towards a more representative body.

The Lib Dems have nominated agricultural economist Julia Aglionby, former Barnsley councillor and physiotherapist Hannah Kitching, economist Tim Leunig, Lib Dem campaigns director Dave McCobb and offshore wind entrepreneur Mark Petterson for the Lords.

Party leader Ed Davey said: ‘I am absolutely delighted that Julia, Hannah, Tim, Dave and Mark will be joining our brilliant Liberal Democrat team in the House of Lords.

‘Each of them has the right skills, experience and values to help us hold the Government to account, deliver the change people need, and fix our broken politics, including reforming the House of Lords.’

Sir Keir has been under pressure to stand by his promise not to hand out honours to mark his resignation.

Prime Ministers typically compile a list of gongs when they quit, often rewarding close aides and political allies.

In the past even relatively junior staffers have received OBEs, while others have been granted a peerage in recognition of their dedication.

However, Sir Keir has been scathing about the convention in the past, and flatly ruled out issuing one.

In 2023, when Boris Johnson‘s list emerged,  he was asked on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme whether he would hand out resignation honours.

‘No. There are other opportunities,’ he replied. ‘Tony Blair didn’t have a resignation list. It’s very hard to justify…

‘There are other avenues for that and I think it’s easier to be clean about this and simply say, no, I wouldn’t do it.’

No10 has yet to clarify whether Sir Keir will issue a list, which often emerge many months after a premier’s departure.

The Odyssey rich list: (L-R) Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron and Zendaya at the world premiere in London this month

It’s undoubtedly one of the biggest film releases of the year.

And a huge part of the hype around The Odyssey is its incredibly star-studded cast who have been busy on the film’s promotional trail in recent weeks.

The likes of Zendaya, her husband Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon  and Robert Pattinson star – but who comes out on top in a rich list of the cast?

The Christopher Nolan-fronted film is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic the Odyssey, which sees the titular Greek King embark on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War in a bid to reunite with his beloved wife Penelope.

Matt, 55, is starring as the titular hero Odysseus, while Devil Wears Prada icon Anne, 43, plays his devoted queen, who is forced to fend off potential suitors in her husband’s absence.

In what has been dubbed his ‘most extreme project to date’ alongside an impressively starry cast – the pressure for Christopher to win over critics is like no other.

Already known for his impressive art and high-budget fare, Christopher’s latest film could prove to be his most ambitious yet, with the $250million budget the most expensive of his career and his first shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras.

But who is the richest of his cast?

Director Christopher Nolan – $250M net worth

Filmmaker Christopher, 55, is one of the most prominent and successful directors of all time with classics like Interstellar, Dunkirk, The Dark Knight and Inception.

His films have earned over $6 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing film directors of all time.

In 2024 it was revealed that his final payday for Oppenheimer was just shy of $100 million, after the film grossed almost a billion dollars at the box office.

The blockbuster film starring Cillian Murphy as atomic bomb creator J Robert Oppenheimer, raked in an eye-watering $958 million worldwide.

This figure is supposedly an amalgamation of Nolan’s salary, box-office escalators, backend compensation and a bonus from his Academy Award wins.

Oppenheimer nabbed a whopping seven Oscar wins, including Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Original Score, Actor in a Leading Role (Cillian), Actor in a Supporting Role (Robert Downey Jr), Cinematography and Achievement in Film Editing.

Made with a $100million budget, Oppenheimer took the crown for highest-grossing Best Picture Winner since The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, which was made in 2004.

Christopher has reached a career high with his epic take on Homer’s The Odyssey, with five star reviews for the star-studded movie flooding in from around the globe.

The review embargo lifted on Wednesday ahead of the movie’s release on Friday, and with nearly 60 reviews in so far, The Odyssey has achieved a near-perfect score on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes with a current standing of 99%.

That 99% score places Nolan’s 13th feature film at the top of the pile of his past movies with The Dark Knight trailing behind with a 94% critic score.

The reviews for The Odyssey are almost universal in their soaring praise and five star ratings.

The Daily Mail’s Brian Viner declared that ‘Nolan’s film – its star-studded cast led by Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Zendaya – is a glorious cinematic experience, a triumph both of story-telling and movie-making.’

Viner added ‘I rarely say this of movies nearly three hours long – one viewing simply isn’t enough.’

The trio were seen making their way through the event hustle and bustle, with Charlize gently guiding her daughter August through the throng as Jackson followed close behind.

It marked a rare public appearance for Jackson and August, who Theron adopted in 2012 and 2015, respectively.

Adoption was always an avenue Charlize wanted to pursue when it came to her family.

I don’t feel like I’m missing out on something,’ she explained during a 2018 interview with Chelsea Handler for Elle. ‘This was always my first choice, even when I was in a relationship.

‘I was very honest with my partners that I was open to having my own biological kids but that adoption had to be a part of my life. I felt that strongly about it.’

In addition, Matt and Ben Affleck co-founded and run an independent production company called Artists Equity.

Matt has been centre stage on the press trail with a string of recent appearances to promote his role in The Odyssey.

And by the actor’s side has been his wife Luciana and their four daughters, as the family have become fixtures supporting him at red carpet events in recent years.

The couple are parents to three daughters, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15, and Matt also adopted Luciana’s daughter Alexia, 27, in 2005.

Robert has also had lucrative roles in The Batman, Tenet, and this year starred opposite Zendaya again in The Drama.

He also has a multi-million-dollar endorsement deal with Dior men’s fragrances.

‘I’ve never seen people look so exhausted [working on a movie],’ he explained of filming The Odyssey recently.

‘This was only a third of the way. I started a third of the way through the movie, and they’d already been to [two] countries by that point, and people just looked like… at the end of every day, people were broken.’

His co-star Tom also said in an interview this week that the shoot was his ‘toughest’ job to date.

Robert is in a relationship with model and singer Suki Waterhouse. They share one child together.

The film returned for a lucrative second instalment earlier this year for which Anne reportedly earnt $12.5 million.

Meryl Streep, 78, and Emily Blunt, 43, were also each paid the same to reprise their beloved characters from the 2006 original film.

Sources told Variety that while Meryl was the biggest name, she advocated for the other two leading ladies to earn just as much as she would, negotiating a ‘favored nations’ contractual agreement in which all parties are paid equally.

In contrast, Anne reportedly earned a $1 million paycheck for the 2006 film while Blunt took home $800,000.

Aside from The Devil Wears Prada she has also had lucrative roles in The Princess Diaries, the Dark Knight Rises, and is thought to have earned $10 million for her Oscar-winning role in Les Misérables.

Anne already shares sons Jonathan, 10, and Jack, six, with husband Adam Shulman, 45, and announced her third pregnancy with a social media post in late June.

Taking to Instagram, she gave fans a glimpse at her growing bump while dressed in a draped white top and matching maxi skirt.

She attached the Barbara Lewis song Baby, I’m Yours and also made the title the caption.

‘I know that not everybody who wants to be a parent gets to be. I’m just blown away by how fortunate I am,’ the actress told People in April as she was named Most Beautiful Woman.

‘It went really well for me twice, and that’s really lucky,’ she acknowledged about her prior pregnancies.

Anne also credited her husband, whom she wed in 2012, with holding down the fort while she works.

The rapper previously worked with Nolan in a purely musical context for his 2020 sci-fi action thriller Tenet, in which Scott performed the film’s theme song, THE PLAN.

In a GQ profile of Scott from that year, Nolan spoke about his collaboration with Scott on the performer’s first song written for a film.

‘His voice became the final piece of a yearlong puzzle,’ Nolan said. ‘His insights into the musical and narrative mechanism [composer] Ludwig Göransson and I were building were immediate, insightful, and profound.’

Scott and Nolan also share a love for premium-format IMAX film.

Ahead of the release of Tenet, Scott shot his music video for FRANCHISE – which he also directed – on IMAX stock, and the video was later shown before IMAX screenings of Tenet in order to lure moviegoers back to cinemas.

Scott later shared a photo of a handwritten note Nolan had shared with him in response to the video.

‘Travis – Love the video (shot on film, no less!)’ Nolan gushed in the note, which was written in pencil in a lined notebook. ‘I can’t wait to hear it on the IMAX speakers, and see those sheep stampede across the giant screen as a part of a Travis/Tenet/Travis sandwich! Great work, Chris.’

Zendaya – who plays Athena in The Odyssey – is undoubtably one of the biggest stars of the film and has had an incredibly successful few years with roles in Spider-Man, Euphoria and the Dune franchise.

The actress, 29, reportedly earned around $1 million per episode for her role as drug addict Rue in HBO’s Euphoria which returned for a third and final series this year.

She also secured large back-end bonuses for the Spider-Man franchise and is thought to have received a $10 million salary for the 2024 tennis film Challengers.

Zendaya has also earnt millions from high-profile deals with luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, and Lancôme.

Earlier this year her husband Tom confirmed that they were married during the press tour for Spider-Man.

In a recent Esquire UK interview, published last week, Tom ended months of speculation about the couple’s marriage as he declared: ‘I found my person. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been’.

Referencing a number of highly-realistic, AI-generated ‘wedding’ images of the couple that went viral on Instagram and TikTok, Tom was asked if any family members had thought they’d missed their actual wedding after seeing the pictures.

Tom answered: ‘No, because they were all there… That’s all you’ll get on that’, confirming that the nuptials did actually take place.

Zendaya’s longtime stylist, Law Roach, first claimed Tom and Zendaya were married during an interview at the 2026 Actor Awards in Los Angeles in February.

The stylist, 47, casually dropped in the news by saying: ‘The wedding has already happened. You missed it!’, but the couple declined to clarify at the time.

Zendaya first debuted her engagement ring, designed by London-based jeweler Jessica McCormack, at the 2025 Golden Globes.

Tom, 30, – who plays Telemachus the son of Odysseus and Penelope – is part of a movie power couple with his wife Zendaya.

The vast majority of his wealth comes from playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

He has reportedly earned around $18.75 million from Marvel films alone.

Tom has also starred in other high-profile non-Marvel films such as Uncharted, Cherry, and The Impossible.

More recently he started his own non-alcoholic beer brand Bero and has invested in pricey property in the Kingston area of London where he is from.

Tom recently revealed how Zendaya ‘boosted his confidence’ while filming The Odyssey – as she said it was ‘the dream’ to be cast together.

At the recent world premiere Tom was asked what he had learnt from working so closely alongside his wife on the project.

He replied: ‘To be confident and be bold. She makes big choices when she plays characters.

‘She’s not afraid to create the characters and she does it in a way where they feel like real people.’

He added to Entertainment Tonight: ‘She makes big, bold choices. I think there are a few actors who can do it as well as she can, and I love watching her do it.’

Meanwhile Zendaya has said that being cast with Tom in The Odyssey was ‘the dream’.

The actress said she was already ‘so proud’ of Tom when he got cast in the epic, and she was even more delighted they got to share the experience together when she joined him in the star-studded ensemble.

She told Extra: ‘I remember when he got the call, I was, like, absolutely over the moon, so excited, so proud.

‘And then never did it… cross my mind that a second call would be coming to our home, you know? So, that was so special.

‘And yeah, just to be able to share something like that and watch him work in this context… It’s the dream… It’s absolutely the dream. So, I was happy.’

Lupita, 43, has built her fortune through starring roles in major blockbuster franchises such as Black Panther and Star Wars.

She also has a long-standing, lucrative global ambassadorship with Lancôme and other top brands.

Nolan recently defended his decision to cast Kenyan actress Nyong’o in the movie after Musk called the casting ‘historically inaccurate.’

Lupita is set to play Helen of Troy, and was named People Magazine’s ‘Most Beautiful Woman’ in 2014 following her triumphant Best Supporting Actress Oscar win for 12 Years A Slave.

Nolan defended his castings, saying: ‘Hopefully they’ll enjoy the film, even if they don’t agree with everything. The oldest depictions of Homeric characters tend to be depicted in the manner of people living in Homer’s time…

‘So there’s a pretty strong case there for portraying things that way because that’s the way the first audience received the story.’

Musk was called out for his remarks about the casting in January by The View host Sunny Hostin.

She said: ‘Anyone can portray a fictional character. It doesn’t have to be a white person that plays this part.’

She added: ‘I think we have to call a thing a thing when we’re talking about someone like Elon Musk… We know what this is.

‘He is a white supremacist. In my view, he is a racist.’

Emmy-winner Alec Baldwin has since weighed in on Musk’s anti-woke campaign against Nolan’s movie.

Elliot, 39, – who plays the Greek soldier Sinon in The Odyssey – was catapulted to stardom with his lead role in the 2007 indie hit Juno.

Since then he has starred in major franchise and commercial films, including Inception and X-Men: The Last Stand.

He has also starred as Viktor Hargreeves in the hit Netflix series The Umbrella Academy.

Elliot and his girlfriend Julia Shiplett stepped out for a rare date night as they both attended the NYC premiere of The Odyssey on Tuesday.

The 39-year-old actor, who came out as a transgender back in 2020, was joined by the Overcompensating actress on the star-studded red carpet as the pair posed for sweet photos together.

Their rare appearance together on the red carpet comes a little over one year after the Juno star went public with their relationship.

Back in June 2025, Page uploaded an Instagram post as both he and Shiplett took a selfie together while standing on a rainbow-painted street. In the caption, the actor simply added a rainbow and heart emojis.

There was praise for The Odyssey before even the review embargo lifted.

Last week critics rushed to social media to hail Nolan’s 13th feature as ‘flawless filmmaking.’

Universal Studios opted to skip the previews it typically holds for influencers, meaning the majority of the initial reactions on social media come from members of the press invited to the gala premiere in Leicester Square.

Introducing the movie in London last week, British filmmaker Nolan told the audience that holding the global premiere in London was ‘a full circle moment’ after growing up ‘coming to see movies in Leicester Square’ and ‘dreaming of one day making a movie that would fill this screen.’

He then issued a lighthearted warning to the crowd of critics, pointing out: ‘You are the first in the world to see this film so be kind’.

Chloe Madeley has revealed that she had a birthday dinner with her ex-husband James Haskell.

The daughter of TV icons Richard and Judy began dating former rugby union player James Haskell. They tied the knot in front of their family and friends in a lavish ceremony held in Berkshire in 2018.

During an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain in February 2022, James announced on live TV that he and Chloe were expecting a baby girl. Their daughter Bodhi, who is now three, was born later that summer.

Sadly, the pair announced that they were separating in October 2023. The announcement arrived while their ITV reality show, Chloe Madeley: A Family Affair, was airing.

They said in a joint statement at the time: “We had not planned on releasing a statement at this time – certainly not while the television show was airing – but constant speculation about our marriage has, unfortunately, forced our hand.”

Taking to Instagram this week, Chloe revealed that she marked turning 39 by having dinner with James, who played over 70 times for England. They were joined by little Bodhi as they smiled for pictures together.

Chloe stunned in a sheer white blouse, while former rugby man James sported a blue polo top. The trio feasted on a selection of fish tacos, perfect for any summer meal.

One image shared by Chloe saw her and James, who had a cigar in his hand, posing for a picture with just the two of them in it. She simply captioned the post: “Birthday weekend.”

If that wasn’t enough celebrations for one weekend, personal trainer Chloe later had a meal with her famous parents. Richard and Judy both had huge smiles on their faces as they enjoyed a glass of wine in the heat.

The comments section of the post saw Chloe’s friends and followers rushing to wish her a happy birthday and send her family some love following their busy few days.

Chloe’s update arrives just weeks after James opened up about their split. Appearing on the No Parental Guidance podcast, James noted that he ‘probably didn’t support her [Chloe] enough’ prior to their split.

“I had a lot of DJ gigs away. For the first time that part of my career was going well. I would stay out an extra night and wouldn’t come home, and I probably didn’t support her enough. I didn’t get that stuff right,” he said.

Opening up about how Chloe encouraged him to join the E4 series Celebs Go Dating, James noted: “I was on the fence, and she encouraged me to go for it.

“She’s a good friend and my co-parent, and we’re very transparent with each other. I feel lucky to have that support, it makes everything feel collaborative, and it’s a relationship I truly value.”

Despite them no longer being romativally involved, James said that Chloe remains a ‘good friend’ and they’re ‘very transparent with each other.’ Additionally, he said that he feels ‘lucky to have that kind of trust and support’.

“It makes everything feel collaborative, and it’s a relationship I truly value… Everything I fell in love with in her – her intelligence, her strength – is what I still look for in people,” he said.

Dovestone Reservoir moorland fire still burning as walkers turned away

The fire at Dovestone began on Saturday (July 11), and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) has been working round the clock to contain the spread since then.

The Oldham Times visited the site this morning (July 16), where smoke was still coming from the moorland, with patches spread across several spaces.

All entrances to Dovestone were cordoned off by the police and several walkers were turned away during the time an Oldham Times reporter was in attendance.

One man, who was trying to access the reservoir, said: “It’s just awful.

“I didn’t realise that the whole reservoir was closed, and I come here all the time, so it’s disappointing to get here and find it closed.

“It’s the wildlife I really fear for, so many animals live on these moors, from farm animals to wild ones like hares and deer.

“I can’t bear to think how many of them have lost their home, or worse, died.”

@theoldhamtimes Dovestone is burning for a fifth day today after a fire began on July 11. A 20-year- old woman has been charged with aggravated arson and other offences in relation to the fire. Dave Bell, who owns The Old Cobblers in Greenfield, which is down the road from Dovestone, said: “It’s kind of annoyingly inevitable.

“I think that something more severe needs to be done to stop it, because it does happen, and, you know, if there’s no rain, it’s going to happen.

“It’s always something that sets it off, at least once a year.

“So I don’t really know what the answer is, but maybe stronger restrictions regarding who goes there, what they take up there, whether there needs to be security, whether we need to think about permits for the people that go there, so that they know who they are, because it is obviously a massive problem.

“I think if you asked the fire brigade, they’d say there’s a huge problem.”

Shania Care-Slede, of Market Street in Hyde, appeared before Manchester Magistrates Court on July 14, where the case was referred to the Crown Court.

She will appear before Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on August 18, when she will be asked to enter a plea to the charges.

She was also charged with being reckless as to whether life was endangered and dangerous driving.

Hovingham Village Market launches Young Enterprise Award

Hovingham Village Market is launching its Young Enterprise Award to support young local entrepreneurs.

Successful applicants will be charged super-low rents for the first six months and given access to hands-on training and mentoring.

The scheme is linked to the National Market Traders Federation Young Traders Markets Campaign.

Young traders at Hovingham Village Market will also be encouraged to enter the

annual Young Trader Market competition, with the chance to become regional and

maybe even UK champions.

The Young Entrepreneurship Review published by the Princes Trust (now the Kings Trust) in 2021 found that while 53 per cent of 18 to 30-year olds in this country dream of setting up their own business, only eight per cent are actually self-employed.

The report identified three key barriers to young people realising their entrepreneurial ambitions – access to finance and support, confidence and expectation and access to networks.

Murray Stewart, Vice Chair of Hovingham Village Market said their aim was to encourage and support a new generation of local entrepreneurs – the traders

of tomorrow.

“Our Young Enterprise Award aims to reduce all three barriers, by providing financial support, practical guidance to build skills, and mentoring from more experienced traders.

“We know there are many young people out there with great business ideas. But it’s hard to get a toehold; set-up costs can be high, and the red tape can feel daunting.

“Our new scheme aims to take the pressure off, by giving young entrepreneurs a low-cost, low-risk route in.”

Rob Thompson, Hovingham Market Advisor said running a successful business was not just about money, it’s also about having

“Launching a new retail business is more than just a great product. It’s about

understanding your target market and communicating your offer with confidence and wit. It’s about selling yourself.

“As well as supporting young entrepreneurs, the scheme will benefit Hovingham Village Market in many ways, including recruiting new traders, attracting new customers and – last but not least – bringing in fresh ideas, products and ways of thinking.”

National Market Traders Federation CEO Joe Harrison said: “Markets are the ideal platform to test, develop and grow a new business to whatever ends the young traders’ aspirations and ultimate goals for their business are.

“Whether that be continuing on a market, moving into bricks and mortar retailing or wholesaling and manufacturing at a much greater level.”

The scheme is open to all young people aged 16-30, at July 1,2026, who live within 30 miles of Hovingham village (YO62 4LF).

It’s aimed at applicants who are actively involved in managing their stall, making key decisions on what to sell and how. are The market is also looking for new traders who will add to our existing rich mix of stalls. They may be making or growing their own product, or selling unusual items sourced from elsewhere.

They are especially interested in environmentally conscious products and in traders who are passionate about what they sell. In keeping with the Hovingham Village Market ethos, all products should be good quality and distinctive.

The chosen young traders will be asked to pay just £30 to attend their first three

markets – that’s a saving of £40 on the normal three-market price.

For markets four to six, they will pay £45; a further saving of £25. Where necessary, the market will also fund any Public Liability Insurance required for the first six months of trading.

After six months, they may choose to stay on as a regular trader, as part of the Hovingham Village Market ‘family’.

As well as financial support, the market will also provide practical guidance, drawing on its team’s many years’ experience, and one-on-one advice from other market traders.

Young Welsh ‘triple-threat’ already on Steve Tandy’s radar as breakthrough looms

Published

Wales Online

The Cardiff centre has impressed for Wales U20s this summer and is set to hit the heights

In Welsh rugby, there are prospects and there are players spoken about in different terms altogether. Steffan Emanuel belongs firmly in the latter category.

For the last few years the Cardiff centre has been viewed as one of the country’s outstanding young talents, a player widely expected to graduate to the highest level.

The 20-year-old is already firmly on Steve Tandy’s radar, featuring on the national side’s succession plan, and a senior Wales debut appears a matter of when, not if.

JOIN OUR WALES RUGBY FACEBOOK PAGE Latest news, analysis and much more

Before departing for the World Rugby U20 Championship in Georgia, Emanuel spent time with the senior Wales squad during one of Tandy’s alignment camps, another sign of the regard in which he is held.

“It was an unbelievable experience and to start dripping in with those senior members has been invaluable,” he said. “To see how they operate it has been invaluable.

“A lot of it was meetings around how Steve wants the team to operate and why we do what we do. It was over two days and that was the first day. The boys did the bronco but I had the bronco calf so I managed to get out of that!

“There was a lot of skills work on the second day. There was a lot of implementing what Steve wants more than anything.”

Only a few years ago, Emanuel was an admirer of many of the players who now share a training field with him.

The transition from prospect to genuine contender has been swift, and it will not be long before he is challenging for a place in the senior Wales squad.

“Yes, it was surreal playing and training with those boys,” he said. “I’m really lucky to do that at Cardiff as well. If you’d told me even last year I’d be training with Leigh Halfpenny, I’d laugh in your face.

“To get those experiences to train with Joe Hawkins, Eddie James and Ben Thomas – just to name a few – and to see how they operate is inspiring. Hopefully I’m lucky enough to be in their shoes in a few years time.”

Emanuel has yet again been one of Wales U20s’ standout players this summer. The co-captain is a triple threat player with a terrific skillset who makes good decisions under pressure and can read the game extremely well.

He is in a backline which includes a number of Cardiff academy players, including scrum-half Sion Davies, centre Osian Darwin-Lewis and wings Rhys Cummings and Tom Bowen.

The future looks extremely bright for Cardiff and it would be a surprise if Emanuel was not a permanent fixture in Corniel van Zyl’s side next season.

“I think the catchment area of Cardiff is massive,” he said. “Just to be in with those type of guys is unbelievable. To come through with essentially your best mates you can’t buy that really.

“All of us will try to keep our head down, train as hard as we can and hopefully we will be regular starters for the senior Cardiff team.”

He also believes Wales Under-20 fly-half Carwyn Leggatt-Jones has the talent to reach the very top and hopes they will one day line up together for the senior national side.

“He’s a class player and a class boy,” he said. “Sometimes you think why has he done that but he’s excellent.

“For a young boy he’s got so much confidence and he’s got a high ceiling. He’s so good to play with and who knows in a few years we can continue that partnership.”

Wales U20s face Scotland in the fifth-placed play-off tomorrow following their dramatic victory over Australia.

Should they win it will be their highest placed finish since 2013 and Emanuel insists they are determined to come out on top.

“It would be massive for us,” he said “We spoke about it in the week that it would be the first time since 2013. The country hasn’t done it for that long so if we can be the first crop to do it since then it would be massive.

“Not just for us but for those at home. I think it would give the nation a bit of a boost as well. They’ve grown massively over the last 12-18 months as well so it is going to be one hell of a challenge.

“They’ve also picked up some great scalps as well. It is going to be a tough game and hopefully we can end our campaign on a high.

“We play them throughout the season and we know each other inside out. It’s a mindset at the end of the day and whoever wants to win it more will be winners.”

More than 800 Canadian wildfires burning as air quality alerts extend to US

Published

on

Plumes of smoke at the top of a hill.

Fires in the past burned more frequently in western Canada, but recent years have seen that trend migrate eastward, with large fires now burning in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic provinces, Prof Chasmer said, leading to more noticeable smoke in densely populated cities like Toronto and New York.

She added that this has strained firefighting efforts in Canada, whose primary focus is to ensure the flames don’t spread to nearby towns. Putting out the fires completely is “very difficult”, Prof Chasmer noted, due to their scope and intensity.

Responding to the criticism from US lawmakers, Carney said on Thursday that both countries have a responsibility to fight climate change.

He added his government is “in close communication” with provinces and local communities and is prepared to help.

Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed criticism of his government’s handling of the fires, noting that over 150 fire crews are on the ground battling the blaze.

“We will spend whatever it takes,” Ford said.

In addition to the hazardous smoke, the wildfires in northern Ontario have forced hundreds from local First Nations communities to evacuate, with videos showing some fleeing the remote area by boat.

Homes and buildings in the area have also been damaged extensively by the flames, said Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige in a statement.

A dramatic video on Wednesday showed a freight train in Ontario, Canada surrounded by wildfire flames, as workers requested an emergency rescue.

Canadian National Rail said in a statement that the workers who were trapped outside Armstrong were all safely rescued, and that operations have been temporarily suspended in the region.

Child harmed herself at children’s home as Ofsted concerns persist

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

The care home has had several monitoring inspections since a full inspection in February 2026 which found it to be ‘inadequate’

A child harmed herself at a care home where Ofsted continues to raise concerns. The watchdog carried out its latest monitoring visit at Clare Lodge care home in Lincoln Road, Glinton, on May 27.

The care home, which is overseen by Peterborough City Council, has continued to be monitored by Ofsted after it was rated inadequate at a full inspection in February.

During the monitoring visit, inspectors recognised that the home generally provides a “suitable environment for the secure care of vulnerable children”. It noted that some areas require “immediate attention”.

The report outlines an incident where a child was able to use a “fitting” at the home to harm themselves and Ofsted was notified. During the May inspection, inspectors identified “the same fitting had not been repaired effectively and remained a risk to children”.

The report added: “A child’s bedroom had the same failure that had not been identified or addressed. This bedroom was not occupied at the time, but senior staff could not tell inspectors if this failure had been evident before a child recently moved out of this room.”

Items and other fittings with a “potential risk to children” were also discovered by inspectors, which were immediately raised with staff. Inspectors were told that regular security and safety checks are carried out by staff, but these have “failed to identify and address these matters”, the report highlighted.

The report added: “Some areas were unkempt and not kept a good enough standard for the children. For example, the entrance corridor to the music room was dirty with cobwebs on the walls. An outside play area used regularly by children had a number of weeds growing that appeared to have been there for some time.

“Two mirrors, one in a lounge and one in a child’s bedroom, had graffiti left from a child who has moved out of the home. This lack of care of the environment impacts on children’s perceptions of how they are valued and on their life at the home.”

A spokesperson for Peterborough City Council said: “We acknowledge the findings of Ofsted’s latest monitoring visit at Clare Lodge. The latest monitoring visit reflects the progress being made in some important areas, but we are not complacent and fully recognise that further work is needed to deliver the consistently high standards our children and families deserve.

“We accept the findings and remain focused on strengthening practice, improving consistency and ensuring children receive the right help and protection at the right time.”

Clare Lodge cares for up to 16 girls between 10 and 17 years old. At the time of the May inspection, four children were living at the care home.
