Look up tonight as the Moon grows brighter ahead of Harvest Moon
Skywatchers looking up after sunset may have noticed the Moon appearing larger and brighter in recent nights.
The phase gets its name from the increasing amount of the Moon’s surface lit up by the Sun. During this stage, the bright section continues to grow until the Moon reaches its fully illuminated state.
It acts as a countdown to the full moon, with the lunar surface becoming increasingly bright night after night. The Harvest Moon, also known as the Corn Moon, is set to peak on Saturday, September 26.

Astronomy enthusiasts say the waxing gibbous period is one of the best times to observe details on the Moon’s surface through binoculars or a telescope, thanks to the contrast created by sunlight striking its craters and mountains.
And the stunning phenomenon is certainly catching the eye of locals, with Bolton Camera Clubs taking some stunning shots of it, including Clare Halsall who commented: “It’s stunning out there right now.”
