Lord Deramore’s named School of the Year at Pride Awards

Lord Deramore’s Primary School, in Heslington, was presented with the award at a special ceremony at York Racecourse on September 10.

Headteacher James Rourke said: “We have everyone who represents the school year groups and departments here with us on stage.

“We could not run the school without them.

“It’s a team effort, but the real winners are our children.”

Lord Deramore’s is a busy school with children from a wide range of backgrounds, including those with additional social and educational needs.

The school’s nominator said: “We were blown away by the effort they put into their Yorkshire Day celebration when we joined them as a civic party.

“The whole school had come together to learn about Yorkshires history, their place in the county, what made Yorkshire special and why they could be proud of where they lived.

“They had decorated the school and even got an ice cream van for the children to enjoy a treat.

“Whilst outside the regular curriculum, this is the above and beyond work that make a school special and its pupils connected and integrated in ways that many others don’t.

“It was a joyful celebration and one the children will remember and look forward to in future.”

In 2024, Lord Deramore’s was rated Outstanding by Ofsted, who praised the school for its high expectations and “effective” transition strategies, helping pupils get the support they needed immediately.

It added: “Pupils at Lord Deramore’s achieve exceptionally well.”

Through creative, memorable experiences the school fosters pride, belonging and connection, leaving a lasting impact on its children.
