Man, 20, died when his friend drove rented Lamborghini at speed of 120mph on motorway before crashing

A 20-year-old man died in a car crash after letting his friend drive a rented Lamborghini at speeds of up to 143mph, a court heard. 

Mohammed Shaan Hussain hired the supercar to pick up a friend from HMP Leeds, but first drove it to collect Humaira Batool, then 22, from her home in Bradford at 4am on December 21, 2022.  

CCTV footage showed that the woman initially sat in the passenger seat, though soon after the pair swapped seats at a set of traffic lights. 

Leeds Crown Court heard this week that Batool drove the Lamborghini Urus along the M62 at ‘grossly excessive speeds’ up to 143mph in wet conditions.

Just seconds after passing Stott Hall Farm – known as ‘the house in the middle of the motorway’ – the car smashed into a barrier, flipped and burst into flames. 

Batool managed to escape the wreckage and was found on a grass verge near the motorway, but Mr Hussain was trapped inside as motorists desperately tried to save him. 

He died after bystanders attempts to help were thwarted by flames before a ‘very significant explosion’.

The vehicle was travelling at around 120mph when it passed Stott Hall Farm, the court heard. Eight seconds later, however, it had come to a standstill after striking a barrier.

Batool is now standing trial in Leeds after denying causing death by dangerous driving.  

Mr Dunn said: ‘Batool told witnesses the flames had melted the seatbelt, enabling her to escape the vehicle.’

He added that the case against her was that she had ‘deliberately and willingly driven a very high-powered vehicle at excessive speed at night in the rain’.
